Sewing Machine Parts: Part 1 1. Needle and Needle - DO NOT USE HANDWHEEL! On / Off Switch 2. Reverse Button – Reverse 3. – Holds down fabric 4. Stop/Start button must be green to sew. This is only done when the presser foot is down.

5. Speed Switch – Regulates your sewing speed. (NOTE: remember we are in a school zone – So sew slowly!!)

6. Regulator – Regulates stitch sizes (Large, Medium, Small). To make changes click the light at the bottom of the stitch regulator. Then slide the switch to the stitch size required. Most stitching is done with the medium stitch size.

7. ZigZag Stitching - Press the zigzag button light when using this 4 type of stitch. The up/down button will change the numbers on the screen and will determine what stitch you are making. Check the plastic chart to see what numbers correlate to each design. Since we have the “J” foot on, these are the stitches we will be using.

9. Practice Steps . . . (Use slow or medium speed for all.) a. Using the Stitch Regulator, sew 10 large stitches, 10 medium and 10 small stitches. b. Sew 1 line with a medium , 5 stitches at the beginning and the end. Remember to have 3 rows of stitching directly on top of each other when doing the backstitching. (forward, back, forward) c. Sew a zigzag row of stitching. (#4) Backstitch at the beginning and the end. d. Sew around the entire square. Be sure to have your needle in the square corner when you turn.

Sample Directions 1. Cut 2 squares of fabric about 4 - inches square. IF white fabric is used, just fold in half. Keep together while all sewing is done. Set the stitch regular to medium/large.

2. Using the Seam Guide, evenly straight stitch a row of stitches 5/8 of an inch around the entire edge. Backstitch at the beginning and the end. Be sure to make corners – 900.

3. Inside the square, evenly stitch 2 rows with a straight stitch. Backstitch at the beginning and the end.

4. Next, stitch 2 rows with a . (Use zigzag stitch #4.) Backstitch at the beginning and the end.

5. Seam Finishes: If your project requires seams to be finished, such as pants, shorts, or some cotton bags, we will decide if the serger will be required or if you will use one of the zigzag stitches would be the best.

Final Steps: Cut off all hanging threads close to the fabric. Press sample if needed. Attach to this worksheet. Place completed work in assigned tray.
