DIRECTIEVERSLAG 2020 Inleiding Stichting Droom en Daad werkt aan het verfijnen van haar visie en vervullen van haar missie: een mooier en aantrekkelijker Rotterdam door te investeren in kunst en cultuur. Hierbij kijkt de Stichting met extra aandacht naar talentontwikkeling, de publieke ruimte en het revitaliseren van cultureel erfgoed. De activiteiten van Stichting Droom en Daad hebben in het jaar 2020 grotendeels in het teken gestaan van de uitbraak van de COVID-19 pandemie. Talentontwikkeling Op gebieden variërend van klassieke muziek tot hiphop en van architectuur tot beeldende kunst is er (jong) talent in Rotterdam. Stichting Droom en Daad wil een bijdrage leveren om dit talent tot wasdom te brengen. Dat doet Stichting Droom en Daad onder andere door bij te dragen aan het Batavierhuis, Big Idea, het RIDCC, de Heerenhuyskamerconcerten en het ICCR. Al deze -en meer- activiteiten zijn door de COVID-19 pandemie in aangepaste vorm doorgegaan of afgelast en waar mogelijk verschoven naar 2021. Mede als gevolg van de COVID-19 pandemie heeft de Stichting een aantal nieuwe en eenmalige initiatieven – op het gebied van talentontwikkeling – gesteund. Publieke ruimte De publieke ruimte draagt bij tot een prettig leefklimaat en een positieve beleving van de stad voor zowel bezoekers als bewoners. Eind 2020 heeft de Stichting twee beelden aangekocht die komend jaar in de Rotterdamse buitenruimte worden geplaatst. Revitaliseren Rotterdams cultureel erfgoed Stichting Droom en Daad zet zich in om het Rotterdamse culturele erfgoed te behouden en te revitaliseren. Niet door er een stolp overheen te plaatsen, maar door er opnieuw leven in te blazen. Het Batavierhuis, de Fenix en de Doopsgezinde kerk zijn aangekocht door de Stichting en hebben reeds of krijgen in de komende jaren een nieuwe bestemming. -

Codarts Research Festival, That Will Take Place on Thursday 11 March 2021
Dear reader, A wholehearted welcome to the fifth edition of the Codarts Research Festival, that will take place on Thursday 11 March 2021. Due to the continuing covid-19 pandemic this will be an online event, with live streamed presentations in ZOOM 1, and online presentations in ZOOM 2. This year's edition has a distinct RASL*) -flavor, as the theme is ‘Social engagement and the Arts.’ As the ‘traditional’ jobs in the arts are under increased pressure, and our society is faced by seemingly insurmountable problems, like climate change and pollution, but also social disintegration and loneliness, many artists feel the need to reposition themselves and look for ways to contribute. The covid-19 pandemic has made these problems even more acute. The Research Festival will address these issues, with (inter)national speakers from the world of dance, music and theater, next to a variety of research presentations from Codarts students and staff. And you are invited to caste your vote for the audience award during the annual Master research competition. *) RASL is the Rotterdam Arts and Science Lab. An intense collaboration between Codarts Rotterdam, Arts & Culture Studies (EUR), Erasmus University College (EUR) and Willem de Kooning Academy, with the aim to examine the relationship between the arts and society in a transdisciplinary way. For immediate release Isaac Julien - Vintage April 22 – June 11, 2016 Opening reception: April 22, 6-8pm Jessica Silverman Gallery is pleased to present “Vintage,” a show of early photographs by Isaac Julien. The exhibition presents three bodies of work - Looking for Langston (1989), Trussed (1996) and The Long Road to Mazatlan (1999-2000). Isaac Julien’s artistic practice is rooted in photography. Looking for Langston is an homage to Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes. When Julien was preparing to make what would become this award- winning work, he studied the photographs of James Van der Zee, George Platt Lynes and Robert Mapplethorpe. His research led not only to a critical response to their work but the creation of a landmark in the exploration of desire and the reciprocity of the gaze. Throughout his career, Julien has worked simultaneously with photographers and cinematographers to make still and moving picture artworks. For Julien, the photographs act as “memorial sites.” Sometimes they reveal facts behind his fictions and explore the creative process, other times they zero in on a portrait or go deeper into a moment of contested history. Whatever the case, Julien is unapologetic about his pursuit of beauty. Visual pleasure is essential to his exploration of subaltern issues and so he often works with advanced pre- and post-production technologies to orchestrate what he calls an “aesthetics of reparation.” The three photographic series included in the exhibition are vintage in several senses of the word. Working with Nina Kellgren (cinematographer) and Sunil Gupta (photographer), Julien shot Looking for Langston in the 1980s in London but set it in the jazz world of 1920s Harlem. -

The assessment of this programme takes place in the framework of a broader exercise: in the course of 2017 a cluster of seven master programmes in arts education is assessed. The programme was set up in 2006 and is offered in its current form since September 2013. It targets arts, design and education practitioners who combine their study with a professional career. The curriculum is taught in English, consists of 60 EC and is offered in a part-time variant spread over two years. As part of the course portfolio of the Piet Zwart Institute at the Willem de Koo- ning Academy (WdKA) in Rotterdam, MEiA stands out from other arts education master programmes because it focuses not only on arts but also on design education, its international dimension, its trans-disciplinary approach and its empha- sis on research. For this assessment the committee has used the NVAO framework for limited programme assessment. The committee judges the overall quality of the Master Education in Arts programme at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rot- terdam to be good. -

"30 Pieces" A limited-edition artwork by Bouke de Vries Kunstinstituut Melly is pleased to announce a new limited-edition by Dutch artist Bouke de Vries (b. 1960). The edition includes 30 original sculptures and two AP. Proceeds from the sale of this artwork benefit the exhibitions and educational programming at the institution. Each comes with a certificate of authenticity signed and dated by the artist. In creating this work, fragments of an 18th century Chinese porcelain vase from the Qing Dynasty are cast in a resin sculpture. De Vries’s translucent sculpture is itself modeled after the profile of the original porcelain. The 32 pieces that make up the broken porcelain vase, if restored to its original shape, also make the total number of sculptures by De Vries. Each single porcelain fragment is now encapsulated into one of Bouke’s sculptures. For the artist, “crystallizing these porcelain fragments relates to the way memory captures a precise historical moment.” In 2020, the artist participated in An exhibition with works by Athos Bulcão, Marcos Castro, Anna Franceschini, Ni Haifeng, Nicolás Lamas, Praneet Soi, Adriana Varejão, Ana Vaz, Bouke de Vries, Raed Yassin, Karlos Gil & Belén Zahera, curated by Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy and Bernardo de Souza for the institution formerly known as Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. This exhibition explored the immigration of forms, and especially how a cosmopolitan artifact, such as a piece of blue-and-white ceramic, came to be rooted in a national project in the Netherlands and elsewhere. These ceramics are known here as Delft Blue, and once symbolized advanced technology and globalization. -

1 Het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) toont de nieuwste onafhankelijke en vernieuwende films uit de wereld en is een platform voor actuele filmkunst, opkomend en gevestigd filmtalent en filmgerelateerde kunst. Naast de vertoning van films steunt het filmfestival actief de totstandkoming van auteurscinema en de deskundigheid van filmtalent, de onafhankelijke filmindustrie en filmkritiek. Een internationale coproductiemarkt (CineMart), een fonds voor filmmakers in ontwikkelingslanden (Hubert Bals Fonds), trainingprojecten (Rotterdam Lab, Trainee Project for Young Film Critics) en debatten voor filmprofessionals maken deel uit van het filmfestival. Behalve via het filmfestival en de internationale activiteiten van Hubert Bals Fonds en CineMart, zorgt de Stichting Filmfestival Rotterdam ervoor dat de kunstzinnige film in Nederland op andere wijzen te zien blijft: via de filmtheaters (Rotterdam en route), op dvd (Tiger Releases) en televisie (NPS Wereldcinema). Op landelijk, regionaal en lokaal niveau brengt IFFR studenten en scholieren in contact met onafhankelijke filmkunst via de Rotterdam Film Course, Meet the Maestro, Filmblik Rotterdam en schoolvoorstellingen. All three of these exhibitions view the world through the lens of scripts and scores—revealing the formulas that condition us, both within the parameters for art and beyond, in the face of the driving ideological, political, and economic forces of our lives. Along with these exhibitions, KW launches Open Secret in mid July as part of its digital program. In 2019 maakten we reuzestappen waar- mee we nog dichterbij ons doel zijn gekomen. Vanaf het begin van 2019 programmeert MAMA niet langer meer vanuit een besloten artistieke leiding opgemaakt uit directeur en curator, maar realiseert zij haar jaarpro- gramma in co-creatie met een poule van vier opkomende programmamakers. 2019, het eerste jaar binnen deze nieuwe organisatiestructuur, leverde een programmering op die met recht divers, betrokken en van deze tijd genoemd kan worden. Dieuwke Boersma bracht met The Mind-Blowing Insti- tute een fictief futuristisch onderzoeksinstituut naar de showroom, waar neuro- en lichamelijke diversiteit niet langer meer als handicap beschouwd wordt, maar een andere manier om in de wereld te zijn. Maria Lamslag zocht met Apa kabar? What’s new? naar de manier waarop muziekcultuur en sociale media identiteitsbeleving vormgeven, gevoed door haar eigen biculturaliteit.
