Section 1 first provides a discussion of the demographic ranges of the extant Negrito groups. In section 2, different views as to the time depth of the prehistoric relationship of Negrito groups with in-migrating Neolithic Austronesian speakers to the Philippines will be evaluated. Section 3 then deals with the patterns of their relationship with farmers, specifically the competing patterns of close association with and avoidance of farmers, as revealed from the types of linguistic relationship that hold between the two groups, and in section 4 evidence for retention of a non-Austronesian substratum in the languages of Negrito groups will be discussed. Villaraza, Ph.D. Department of History Northern Illinois University, 2017 Trude Jacobsen, Director This dissertation centers on the importance of cultural production to the process of creating a coherent national identity and a unified political state in the Philippines. More specifically, I will examine role of theatre in relation to the general development of the nation and the state through Aurelio Tolentino’s plays Luhang Tagalog and Kahapon, Ngayon, at Bukas. The Philippines and Filipino people pose a unique case study in the formation of both a specific and coherent national identity and an independent political state space because of geography, varied cultural influences, linguistic diversity, and colonial past. Because of these factors, it is a wonder that a coherent Philippine state exists, much less the generally accepted notion of a Filipino national identity. I argue that cultural production, particularly theatre, actively championed the broader acceptance of a singular Filipino national identity and individual belonging to a collective state at one of the most critical moment in Philippine history; the exit of Spanish colonial rule, the entrance of American imperial rule, and active assertion of political independence of the Philippine Islands by and for the Filipino people. The knowledge formation and critical dialogue occurring through theatre nurtured the notion of a Filipino national identity and buoyed the possibility of a Philippine state across the diverse linguistic and geographic terrain of the archipelago in opposition to the emerging American empire.

Woods Lecturer California State University; UCLA Lecture delivered at the UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies February 3, 2005 Much of what has been written about the Philippines, particularly its history, has been produced either by outsiders, or for outsiders—using their categories, their languages, their terms and often informed by their own agenda, specifically economic and/or political. Unwilling or unable to appreciate the fluid, even ambiguous nature of Tagalog social structure before and after the Spanish intrusion, writers of Philippine history have presented a deeply flawed vision of that society. The desire to view pre-hispanic and early Spanish Philippine societies in primarily institutional and political terms has resulted in a static and consequently mistaken representation of that society as is demonstrated in the concept of barangay. Beginning with institutional reports for the Spanish government and continuing to the present with theoretically based reconstructions, the barangay is presented as the basic unit in early Tagalog society and is constructed as containing various aspects of Western society, including class structure and entrenched leadership. Few have bothered to ask how it is that baranggay, a Spanish corruption of the Tagalog balangay, described the basic unit in that society. This evidence comes from the naming practices of both negrito and non-negrito peoples, from which it can be inferred that many negrito groups have maintained a unique identity distinct from other groups since the dispersal of Malayo-Polynesian languages. Other names, such as Dupaningan and Dumagat, reference locations, from which it is assumed the negritos left fta er contact with Malayo-Polynesian people. Evidence also comes from the relative positions of negrito groups vis-à-vis other groups within the subfamily with which their current language can be grouped. Many of these languages can be shown to be first order branches, suggesting early separation from the people whose languages they first acquired. This affirmation ignores the relevance of Islamization in Manila bay. Accordingly, Jawi script became the dominant writing system in the Malay world from the 15th century onwards affecting also Tagalog culture, as several data confirm. This paper explores the use of Jawi script for Tagalog language and the cultural changes introduced by the Spanish establishment in Manila. Furthermore, it has been described as unnatural process caused and forced by the Spanish clergy. Thus, zealot missionaries destroyed and burned Philippine vernacular manuscripts as pagan crafts forcing the indigenous people to use exclusively Latin script. The story might perhaps be different as we explained in other places (Donoso, 2009 283-328). The first book printed in the Philippines (1593) used the vernacular Brahmic script, named Baybayin. Missionaries always described local scripts in their works and praised the literacy of the people.

    2 3 4 5 6 Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of global aging (Armas, 2001) is occurring at a rate never seen before and the number of people age 65 and older more than tripled over the past half-century, to a record 420 million worldwide. The number of people in the U.S. over age 65 is projected to reach 55 million by the year 2020, with those over 85 expected to grow from 3 million to more than 13 million. These aged members of our society use the lion’s share of long-term care services with diversity of needs ranging from differing personal values and considerable disagreement about what constitutes an optimum quality of life. The diverse needs of the long-term care consumers can no longer be cared for in a “one size fits all” (Pratt, 1999) healthcare service delivery system for their needs are as diverse as where they are coming from. There has to be new ways to accommodate and address their diverse healthcare needs in the long-term care setting. Filipinos were ranked as the 2nd highest in number among the Asian population (US Census, 2000) residing in the United States. They are also recognized as one of the five largest contributors to the nation’s Asian-born population and are expected to have one of the biggest percentage increases between now and 2030. As the rate of Filipino population increases, so does the aging population and yet no known non-profit medical model of geriatric healthcare setting imbedded with ethnic-specific, psycho-socio-emotional, religious and culturally-sensitive services is in place, especially in the Bay Area and San Francisco, to respond to their needs.
