Its purpose is to help schools see how others with similar intakes serve their pupils. We continue to use the methodology used for the last couple of years. Schools in Birmingham face many challenges. They also boast an enormous collective pool of expert leaders and teachers. The purpose of this document is to point you towards similar schools facing similar circumstances with whom you can share practice and experiences. Whatever the problem, this document shows there are always schools to whom you can turn and this is a very important and powerful school improvement tool. We have grouped all Birmingham Junior and Primary schools into families according to key stage 1 prior attainment and context data. You will find your school in one of 18 families. There are also additional families based on EAL and mobility indicators at the back of the document. We are intending on running a ‘free’ half day session during the Autumn Term to enable you to work with other schools in your family group and to create some ‘focussed’ partnerships. On page 11 you can read how schools developed school improvement activity using ‘family’ data over the last few years. We will of course be taking your feedback on this document so that we can enhance it in the future. I hope you use this edition to develop and further strengthen your collaboration with other schools and your colleagues internally to bring about improvements for your pupils. Families of Schools in Birmingham have begun to play an integral part in successful school improvement across the city and the successes we are trying to facilitate through BEP lie ultimately in your hands. I hope that this latest document will continue to contribute to that.. Tracy Ruddle Director of Continuous School Improvement Birmingham Education Partnership 3 Introduction Background In 2008 the DFE published Families of Schools reports for primary and secondary schools in the Black Country, London and Greater Manchester. Schools were grouped to families based on a number of factors including Key Stage 1 Average Points Score, measures of deprivation and the proportion of children with English as an additional language. This enabled schools with statistically similar intakes to understand the size and nature of their attainment gap and provided the opportunity for schools to learn from the best performing school in each family. The reports were well received and subsequent reports were published in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Since 2016 we have been producing “Families of Schools” for Birmingham starting with key stage 2 in 2016 and extending to key stage 1 and 4 in 2017. Following this success, we are continuing these documents for 2019. There are no grouping methodology changes this year and we are continuing to use a schools three year average for prior attainment rather than a single year, prior attainment being both the largest contributor to the grouping methodology and the most volatile year on year. Prior attainment looks the average points score achieved at key stage 1. How have the schools been grouped? Schools are grouped into families on the basis of a combination of their Key Stage 1 children’s prior attainment and contextual data obtained from the January census. The measures include: • Prior attainment (3 year average) • Income deprivation affecting children index (IDACI) • Free school meal eligibility (FSM) • English as an additional language (EAL) • Mobility Using the methodology described at the end of this document an overall score for each school has been determined based on a specific weighting and the schools allocated to family groups. Schools Included All open establishments as of July 2019 which are mainstream state funded
