I love you! I’m dreaming when I’m seeing you smiling. And my love goes on and on and on. It will never be gone, oh gone, oh gone. It surely goes on. And so I’m singing along, along, along. Trying to sing you a song, a song, a song. Trying to write you a song. STORIES IN MY MIND Words & music by Markus Zosel There are stories in m mind When I wake up and find that the night is passing by. There are memories in my head And I can’t go ahead when I see the eagle fly. Sometimes I wonder what life means to me? Like rain and thunder and joy that carries me. There’s sunshine after rain, There’s joy after pain I don’t need to see it end. There’s a world in my mind, The music I will find and things that I defend. Sometimes I’m wandering through the endless space And then I’m dreaming just here at this place. There’s a life worth to life, There’s so much you can give, There is someone waiting somewhere. There are ways we have to find, Things we’re leaving behind, There’s a chance to love and care. And I get high when I look up to the sky. Stars shine so bright, moon is rising high. And when rain is falling I try to start again To find the happiness and a life that is mine… Sometimes I wonder what life means to me? Like rain and thunder and joy that carries me. !3 THE UNANSWERED QUESTION Words & music by Markus Zosel Tell me now, I offered you a rainbow in my hand. Did you understand? Did you understand? I just wanted to be with you anywhere we went. Did you understand? Would you change in case you’d know? Don’t you know I gotta go Wherever I may find A trace of you and me and I gotta be Slightly in a mood to answer Questions to myself. Not to someone else, But if you asked I answered you. Love is strange and love is wild When you’re out there on your own. No one wants to be Nothing else but free. You just need to know someone To trust and understand. Don’t you see my hand? Can’t you see? Just take it now! Tell me now, I offered you a rainbow in my hand. Did you understand? Did you understand? I just wanted to be with you anywhere we went. Did you understand? Would you change in case you’d know? Would it change, would it change, In case you’d know? !4 I GOT MY LIFE Words & music by Markus Zosel I got my life To follow by so strong. I got my lane I’m walking on. I’ve got my songs I’m singing through. I got this day And I got you. I need to know The sunshine is still in me. I love to sail Like a cloud all over the sea. I’ve got my dreams I long to see. I’ve got each morning And that’s for me, just for me. I’ve got tomorrow Each passing day. I’ve got my memories And they won’t fade. I need to know The sunshine is still in me. I love to sail Like a cloud all over the sea. I've got my life To follow by so strong. I got my lane I’m walking on. I need to know The sunshine is still in me. I love to sail Like a cloud all over the sea, all so free. Bound to be free. !5 A SMILE AGAIN Words & music by Markus Zosel Now I’m standing upside down With my crown in my hand, Cause you’re just walking next to me again. It’s just I don’t know what to say, So, I’m just standing there. Every time you walk past me, ey man! Sometimes I still hear your voice And so many dreams have gone, But somehow I can’t forget the smile I saw. Cause you’re the girl I never knew And it’s always the same, But I can’t keep that secret here in me. Give a song to sing as those words can bring My message without talking. Give a smile again in the summer rain - for me. And I guess I’m not the only one Who is admiring you, But I don’t like to change myself for you. And furthermore I hope you know I am who I am, But if you’d like to get someone unknown? Give a song to sing as those words can bring My message without talking. Give a smile again in the summer rain - for me. But the music only gives the chance And it’s so far my best friend. Words you will not understand - I know. And I even don’t know If you’ll ever hear, But the chance of the surprise is in my hand. Give a song to sing as those words can bring My message without talking. Give a smile again in the summer rain - for me. Give a song to sing as those words can bring My message without talking. Give a smile again in the summer rain - for me. !6 DREAM #17 Music by Markus Zosel Instrumental SPECTRUM OF LIGHT Words & music by Markus Zosel Lead me on To that spectrum of light! You won’t find there Neither day nor night, nor night. Take me there Let us all try to care then! Let me see With my heart not my eyes when they’re sad. Love of my life Why did I leave long ago? Where did you go Will you ever try to know? Try to know...? We all go on To the place we belong to. And God only knows But it’s us to be strong and faithful...! Tell Me Words & music by Markus Zosel Tell me, Where are we going? Tell me. Tell me, What are we knowing? Tell me. Is it something we can see? Is it something we believe in? Like thought or a dream Like a gift that we’re receiving? Tell me, Where are we going? Tell me. After all... !7 Show me! All of the wonders. Show me! Show me, I’ve always been wondering. Now, show me! So what can be a real Just some sort of illusion? Just a matter of confusion or a glimpse of hope to see you? Show me, All of the wonders show me. After all... Tell me, I reach out my hand. Now, tell me! Tell me, For who else could do? Tell me! For a moment for a while For a day or for a night, Let it simply be so right The way it once was meant to be. Tell me, I reach out my hand, but tell me! Right now... SEEMS LIKE LOVE Words & music by Markus Zosel It’s been long ago that the flowers bloom. Times of sunny laughter or a moody moon. But to say I wouldn’t mind this time Cause it seems that love’s no friend of mine. Seems that love’s no friend of mine.

To my mother, Rose Skaggs, who supports his dreams and mine. To David Carlson. His dreams and mine are intertwined. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS It is an overwhelming task to think of all of the support that people have given me in support of this dissertation. My dissertation is about collaboration, and I have been unmeasurably lucky to have collaborated with wonderful people. I want to begin by thanking every songwriter I interviewed. Without their trust and insight, I could not have conducted research that is as compelling, touching, and important as the project that has emerged. The generosity and openness of these people, most of whom were total strangers to me, is inspiring. Next, I must acknowledge the support of the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. As a dissertation fellow at the Warren Center, I was able to truly develop my ideas and focus on the work of writing a good dissertation. My fellow fellows at the Warren Center challenged me and supported me. Danielle Picard, Wietske Smeele, Sara Kollner, Alexandra Alekseyeva, David Vila, and James Phelan all contributed to the ways I think about my own work as I try to present it in a manner that is intelligible and meaningful to an interdisciplinary audience.

Professor Werner Sollors Jack Hamilton Professor Carol J. Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously.

  • A Sociological Analysis of Christian Contemporary Music and Aural Piety
“FAITH COMES BY HEARING”: A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF CHRISTIAN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AND AURAL PIETY __________________________________________________________________ A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board __________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Courtney Sorrell Tepera August 2017 Examining Committee Members: Lucy Bregman, Advisory Chair, TU Department of Religion Terry Rey, TU Department of Religion David Harrington Watt, TU Department of History Dustin Kidd, External Member, TU Department of Sociology © Copyright 2017 by Courtney Suzanne Sorrell Tepera ____________________________ All rights reserved iii ABSTRACT Over the past fifty years, Christian contemporary music has joined hymnody and psalmody as a major form of evangelical liturgical and devotional song. While the production and content of this genre have been explored by scholars, few studies have attended to the devotional use of the genre and its role in shaping the religious lives of American evangelicals. This project draws from several sets of data to address this matter: analysis of church-created worship music albums, listener testimonials on Christian radio websites, and focus group interviews of laity and clergy at four South Carolina churches. The data revealed that music is significant to their religious lives outside of church as a means of encountering God, managing emotions, and displaying spiritual capital. Inside churches, the music is used to create a sense of corporate identity that reinforces social bonds within the community and attracts newcomers. Drawing on the methodological framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and his work on social distinction, I argue that American evangelicals who listen to Christian contemporary music are engaged in aural piety, a set of practices, attitudes, and ideas invested in music that structure and evoke the experience of the sacred.

The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A thesis presented to the University Of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2018 © Piacentino Vona 2018 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.

"You Really Got Me": A Complete Charting Odyssey- How The Kinks Blew The Doors Off the British Invasion Against Fierce Competition And Scored Their First U.S. Hit Mark Teehan May 2016 Introduction As a powerful, iconic record, "You Really Got Me" both saved and launched the Kinks' illustrious career. As a musical statement, it was the embodiment of so many forces and emotions: rage, defiance, rebellion, perseverance, and survival. Most of all, it marked the culmination of a monumental struggle by the band to have the song recorded in a manner so that it sounded as they envisioned- original and reflective of their working-class roots, the way it did in their live concerts. Musically, "You Really Got Me" represented a dichotomy of sorts: its controlled, monolithic bass-heavy, strong percussive sound was built around a monster riff that stood in sharp contrast to the wild abandon and distorted, gritty tone of Dave Davies' unique, memorable guitar solo. This essay will initially set the stage by summarizing the creation of "You Really Got Me," its recording, its sonic characteristics, and progress on the UK charts. Afterwards, we will shift to the article's primary focus of analyzing the complex charting of the Kinks' landmark record in the U.S. Using the extensive array of surviving local radio station music surveys from pivotal markets across America, this writer will analyze the intricate connection between those local surveys and the national charts as they affected "You Really Got Me". Furthermore, in order to provide valuable insight into the American pop music industry of the mid-60's and a broader perspective into the commercial progress of the Kinks' record in the U.S., this writer will cover on a secondary basis the charting of another single from a rival British group.

Sound Business: Great Women Of Gospel Music And The Transmission Of Tradition Abstract From the 1930s to the present, women have played instrumental and visible leadership roles in the remarkable growth of African American gospel music. Through both creative and entrepreneurial activities, these women paved the way for the expansion of an emotive sacred music expression from the worship practices of southern migrants to audiences around the world. This dissertation focuses on the work of three cultural trailblazers, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Karen Clark Sheard, who stand out in the development of gospel music as virtuosic vocalists and pivotal figures whose sonic imprints can be heard both in sacred songs performed in churches and in American popular music. By deploying exceptional musicality, a deep understanding of African American Christianity, and an embrace of commercialism, the three singers have conserved and reworked musical elements derived from an African American heritage into a powerful performance rhetoric.
