AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Christopher R. Foertsch for the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Anthropology presented on June 3, 2016. Title: Educational Migration in Indonesia: An Ethnography of Eastern Indonesian Students in Malang, Java. Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ David A. McMurray This research explores the experience of the growing number of students from Eastern Indonesia who attend universities on Java. It asks key questions about the challenges these often maligned students face as ethnic, linguistic, and religious minorities exposed to the dominant culture of their republic during their years of education. Through interviews and observations conducted in Malang, Java, emergent themes about this group show their resilience and optimism despite discrimination by their Javanese hosts. Findings also reveal their use of social networks from their native islands as a strategy for support and survival. ©Copyright by Christopher R. Peluso Laurie Sears Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Anthropology University of Washington Abstract Social Movements and Scientific Forestry: Examining the Community Forestry Movement in Indonesia Mia Siscawati Chair of Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Celia Lowe Department of Anthropology This dissertation examines the cultural aspects of collaboration between social movements and forestry science in the community forestry movement in Indonesia. This movement has served as a response to the application of industrial scientific forestry. This approach has been one of the main tools of state control over land and forest resources in post- colonial Indonesia, particularly since the beginning of the New Order era inaugurated by the military coup of General Suharto in 1966. Indonesian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) responded to this problem with intensive campaigns against state forest policies and the destructive logging practices and began to promote community forestry focused on issues of land tenure and resource rights as an alternative to industrial scientific forestry. One of the groups involved in the community forestry movement in Indonesia has been the progressive academic forestry scholars. Participation of these scholars marked a critical point since, in general, academics have been associated with the ruling regime, and many of them were involved in the development of the forestry paradigms that lead to deforestation and its resultant social problems.

Reflections on Jakarta’s History through Tourism Perspective during the Dutch Ethical Policy (1901 – 1942) Madito Mahardika Introduction The role of government is critical for the tourism industry as a source of guidelines and vanguard for better social and economic welfare. In Jakarta case, the city has long inherited vast touristic commodities from the heritage buildings to a centrum of cultural diversity. To comprehend the historical and contemporary dimensions of tourism, it is imperative to understand the Policy that the government had been taken in the past. This research intends to present the impact of the state policy, especially during the Dutch Ethical Policy, on the social and economic welfare of its citizens using the perspective of tourism. Through this paper, the effort of a city to achieve greater development will be shown with regards to moral responsibility. The Tale of Complaint To derive contemplation from tourism, one must look to history because tourism is a tool to profit from it. According to Merrillees, during the start of the twentieth century, the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina declared that the colonial government of the Dutch East Indies, the colonial name of Indonesia, must prioritise the welfare of both the European and indigenous Indonesian population equally.1 In 1901, Queen Wilhelmina announced the Ethical Policy was to be implemented effective immediately. The Policy was designed as a way to give something back to the people of Indonesia after long periods of ruthless exploitations. The colonial government identified two sectors as their initial top priorities; education and health care.2 Over time, the economic sector also selected as a priority and not without reason.

  • Multiculturalism in Indonesian Novels As a Culture-Uniting Device
ISSN 2039-2117 (online) Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences Vol.5 No.22 ISSN 2039-9340 (print) MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy September 2014 MULTICULTURALISM IN INDONESIAN NOVELS AS A CULTURE-UNITING DEVICE Dr. Suroso Yogyakarta State University [email protected] DOI:10.5901/mjss.2014.v5n22p130 Abstract This study aims to describe multiculturalism in Indonesian novels in the post-independence era. The sources are eight novels written from 1970s to 1990s. Multiculturalism is analyzed using social theories on the basis of cultural pluralistic mosaic. The findings show that multiculturalism in Indonesian novels is manifested in the use of a variety of languages in the works, understanding of social classes, citizens’ devotion, inter-religion understanding, expressions of affection, and inter-nation marriages. Multicultural novels can serve as a culture-uniting device. Keywords: multiculturalism, pluralism, culture-uniting device Introduction Indonesia has more than 13, 000 islands and the people speak in more than 500 languages, have a variety of beliefs and religions, and consist of several ethnic groups, resulting in the difficulty appreciating multicultural facts. Frictions appear among people with different beliefs and religions due to radicalism and a show-off of ethnic characteristics resulting from the regional autonomy policy necessitating that a leader must be an indigenous person and the existence of envy of particular ethnic groups because of economic inequality. All of these affect multiculturalism in Indonesia. Besides, the understanding of multiculturalism may vary because of the infiltration of foreign cultures in their variety of forms such as fashion and lifestyle, the economic and cultural penetration, the information access, and the communication and transportation, making multicultural adaptation easy.

Canisius College Model United Nations 40th Annual Conference Historic Security Council 1948 Indonesian Revolution Conflict Overview After the surrender of Imperial Japan and the end of World War Two, the Netherlands has tried to regain control of its’ former colony known to the locals as Indonesia. Newly appointed President Sukarno declared Indonesia’s independence from Dutch and Japanese authority two days after the Japanese’s surrender. However, this has not been accepted by both of the island republic’s former colonizers. Fighting has broken out 1 between the Indonesian Republicans, the Pemudas who joined them, and the Dutch and the Japanese both trying to retake the newly declared independent nation. This has led to three years of violence across the islands. Japanese military members who abandoned their posts following Japan’s surrender have been supplying weaponry to pro-Republican movements in Indonesia, with some even joining the fighting. There were still Dutch prisoners of war being held by the Japanese at the end of the war and once they were free, violence began between the supporters of the Dutch and those who wanted a Republic of Indonesia. Japanese forces fall on both sides of this conflict as well as the Allies such as the United Kingdom, who had originally shown its’ support for the Netherlands by sending troops to help in the recapturing process. After the Netherlands’ launched a major military offensive known as “police action” they regained control of all deep-water ports in Java and natural resources in Sumatra, Medan, Palembang, and Padang. The hostile takeover may have been successful but caused backlash from The United States and the United Kingdom, stopping the Dutch from a complete conquest.

"United States-Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences of Early American Cold War Policy" by Robert Earl Patterson Master of Arts in History University of Richmond August, 1998 Dr. John Treadway, Advisor From 1945 to 1949, Indonesian nationalists struggled for independence against their Dutch colonial rulers. For most of the period, American foreign policy favored the Netherlands in its desire to reign once again over the archipelago. American foreign policy strategy advocated a "Europe first" position, and possessed finite resources to contain Soviet expansion in the developing cold war. State Department policy planners sided with European powers as they attempted to resume the status quo ante in Southeast Asia following World War II. Colonies were considered essential to the recoveries of Western European powers economically, politically, and psychologically. While the American cold war strategy worked to stabilize Western Europe against Soviet advances, it resulted in negative affects in Asia in general and Indonesia in particular.

  • (Colonial) State 319 the OPIUM REGIME of the DUTCH
the opium regime of the dutch (colonial) state 319 CHAPTER NINETEEN THE OPIUM REGIME OF THE DUTCH (COLONIAL) STATE, 1850-1940 Multatuli’s ‘robber state’ was also a state with a state bureaucracy. It was a colonial state directed at the exploitation of foreign territories without being asked to do so by the indigenous rulers and population, and wheth- er legally or morally allowed, relevant or desirable. At the beginning of the 19th-century, this state and its bureaucracy were rather abstract entities; thunderclouds in a Western tempest with devastating lightning strikes. Of course, the elite had no knowledge of who lived there “far below”and under what conditions and, therefore, what effects this “natural disaster” had. And had forgotten how immense the area was in which this Western Tempest played havoc. For the new Dutch rulers, the island of Java was the only area they ruled for a long time; the enclosed map was not at their disposal. Therefore, the actual opium distribution in Java had to be done by indigenous people who knew the ways to reach the consumers. The colo- nial state had to use opium farmers, but this changed at the end of the cen- tury as the Dutch became more accustomed to the East Indies and the East Indian people to them. Then the Opiumregie was introduced, and its grip on the opium market became unparalleled compared to the VOC or the previous period. This time not only Java and Madura were the center of all activities, but the whole of the archipelago became occupied in a new series of devastating campaigns.
