  • The Rhetoricity of Yarn Bombing
145 Joie de Fabriquer: The Rhetoricity of Yarn Bombing Maureen Daly Goggin Materiality in its many forms, and an intense devotion to the making of things, has renovated and reenergized the world of handcraft . While this change has given prominence to craft materials and techniques, the transformation has been most dramatic in the area of fiber, and quite possibility the most diverse in its manifestation. David McFadden Since the end of the twentieth century and the turn into the new millen- nium, hand crafting has experienced a steep resurgence globally among both women and men, both young and old, both urban and rural. For many craft- ers, hand work is a dynamic response against the separation of labor and do- mestic skills, the split between public and private, the disconnection between mass made and handmade, the division between producers and consumers, and the other binaries rendered by modernity and the industrial age. As the Museum of Arts and Design mission statement for the exhibition Pricked: Extreme Embroidery points out in the epigraph:, of all the art crafts revamped, fiber art crafts, what Jack Bratich and Heidi Brush call “fabriculture,” are among the most prominent. Why? No doubt part of the answer lies in the fact that “fiber is the oldest material manipulated by human beings for practical and aesthetic purposes and at the same time, the most ordinary and ubiquitous in daily life” (McFadden 1). In this piece, I examine the rhetoricity—the material practices and rhe- torical functions—of a specific kind of contemporary knitting and crocheting, namely, yarn bombing.

The pioneering stencil artist, Hugo Kaagman – for allowing me to take up his time for an interview held at his studio at the Amsterdam RAI station. The owner of the artKitchen Gallery in Amsterdam, Janette Dekeukeleire – the supervisor of my nine month internship which has given me beneficial experience not only in the various roles and responsibilities a gallery must undertake but has also put me in touch with many well-known Street artists and given me an insight into the Dutch Street art scene. The owner of the Andenken Gallery in Amsterdam, Hyland Mathers, who discussed the issues of Graffiti with me. The UK Street artist, Phlegm – who obligingly answered several online interview questions, set by myself. The Sheffield-based Graffiti writers, Fista, Such-Des, and Mist One – whom sacrificed part of their free time to talk to me about their legal and illegal work. The New York Graffitti writer, Quik, who demonstrated to me the commercialist, ‘money-making’ aspect of his work.

Juni 2013 um 20 Uhr auf der Südbühne der Gessnerallee Zürich von Viola Rühse (Donau-Universität Krems) „I love the way capitalism finds a place—even for its enemies.

Bombing, Tagging, Writing: An Analysis of the Significance of Graffiti and Street Art Abstract A first look upon a well-contrived piece of graffiti or street art may inspire feelings of surprise, delight, and amusement, but the connection between graffiti and cultural heritage might be more difficulto t perceive. Conventionally, graffiti was synonymous withandalism, v associated with a subculture that needed to be extinguished immediately. However, with the works of such artists as Basquiat, Keith Haring, Banksy, Steve Powers, and the like, graffiti begano t be recognized as something more than crime – something with far more value, something that could reach beyond the walls of a gallery. Indeed, this subculture has since proliferated exponentially, and with its popularity a closer connection to heritage becomes more apparent. Though it may be a more radical and alternative way of creating heritage, its increasing recognition suggests that such cultural values are clearly demonstrated.

  • Pop up Pedagogy: Exploring Connections Between Street Art, Feminist Literacy Practices and Communities
POP UP PEDAGOGY: EXPLORING CONNECTIONS BETWEEN STREET ART, FEMINIST LITERACY PRACTICES AND COMMUNITIES ANNA AUGUSTO RODRIGUES A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO FEBRUARY 2018 © Anna Augusto Rodrigues, 2018 ABSTRACT This feminist qualitative research study is driven by two questions: (1) In what ways does feminist street art create pop ups of informal learning in public spaces, both online and offline? (2) How might street art, created by feminist street artists, be considered a feminist literacy practice that provides a point of entry for women, and those who identify as women, to participate in the shaping of community and global conversations? Data from various sources and media were analyzed: interviews with feminist street artists, social media feeds, photographs, online articles, audio interviews, documentaries and my own personal journal entries. I argue that feminist street art, as artifacts, and the actions associated with its production, can be considered a form of feminist public pedagogy that facilitates informal learning outside of traditional educational systems and also encourages women to contribute to the conversations happening in their communities, both online and in real life. Finally, the dissertation discusses how refusing the division between artifact and action supports the emergence of feminist street art as feminist literacy praxis. ii DEDICATION To all the feminist street artists who take down a piece of the patriarchy each time their street art goes up. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are many people whom I would like to thank for supporting me on this PhD journey.
