The nation doesn’t know it. (Mahasweta Devi, “Behind the Bodice,” emphasis added) Experience and knowledge might seem interchangeable terms. However, when theoretically examined, they pose a conflicting di- lemma in their respective nature and relation with each other. On one hand, knowledge is primarily derived from experience. The intrinsic characteristic of intimacy and immediacy of any experience catego- rizes it as highly subjective. Knowledge, on the other hand, is catego- rized as objective, pertaining to a certain universal appeal. Hereby arises a schism between the two concepts: experience and knowledge. This paper sets out to interrogate the complex relationship between the two concepts through a critical examination of Mahasweta Devi’s short fiction, “Draupadi” (1981) and “Behind the Bodice” (1996). The protagonists of these stories emerge as agents of resistance as the body becomes a crucial site of embodiment of experience. The complexity of experience and its role in the formation of the subject is explored through the course of this paper. Nation building became a significant enterprise in the forma- tion of the identity of the postcolonial India. This identity was prem- ised upon a certain idea of uniformity which led to the homogenization of the nation’s people into a particular perspective. Such perspective, in modern day liberal democracies, is exercised by the state and its various apparatuses (both repressive as well as ideological) to form a singular notion of the nation based on dominant/majoritarian views, thus stripping off its heterogeneity. -

Translator'sl?rcfacc This project, which began with the desire to render into English a rather long tale by Bimal Kar about five years ago, eventually grew into a considerably more extended compilation of Bengali short stories by ten of the most well known practitioners of that art since the heyday of Rabindranath Tagore. The collection is limited in many ways, not the least of which being that no woman writer has been included, and that it contains only a baker's dozen stories (if we count Bonophool's micro-stories collectively as one )-a number pitifully small considering the vast and prolific field of authors and stories a translator has at his or her disposal. -

BETWEEN VIOLENCE AND DEMOCRACY / Sudeshna Banerjee / 1 BETWEEN VIOLENCE AND DEMOCRACY: BENGALI THEATRE 1965–75 SUDESHNA BANERJEE 1 The roots of representation of violence in Bengali theatre can be traced back to the tortuous strands of socio-political events that took place during the 1940s, virtually the last phase of British rule in India. While negotiations between the British, the Congress and the Muslim League were pushing the country towards a painful freedom, accompanied by widespread communal violence and an equally tragic Partition, with Bengal and Punjab bearing, perhaps, the worst brunt of it all; the INA release movement, the RIN Mutiny in 1945-46, numerous strikes, and armed peasant uprisings—Tebhaga in Bengal, Punnapra-Vayalar in Travancore and Telengana revolt in Hyderabad—had underscored the potency of popular movements. The Left-oriented, educated middle class including a large body of students, poets, writers, painters, playwrights and actors in Bengal became actively involved in popular movements, upholding the cause of and fighting for the marginalized and the downtrodden. The strong Left consciousness, though hardly reflected in electoral politics, emerged as a weapon to counter State violence and repression unleashed against the Left. A glance at a chronology of events from October 1947 to 1950 reflects a series of violent repressive measures including indiscriminate firing (even within the prisons) that Left movements faced all over the state. The history of post–1964 West Bengal is ridden by contradictions in the manifestation of the Left in representative politics. The complications and contradictions that came to dominate politics in West Bengal through the 1960s and ’70s came to a restive lull with the Left Front coming to power in 1977. -

The Criterion www.the-criterion.com An International Journal in English ISSN 0976-8165 Revitalizing the Tradition: Mahesh Dattani’s Contribution to Indian English Drama Farah Deeba Shafiq M.Phil Scholar Department of English University of Kashmir Indian drama has had a rich and ancient tradition: the natyashastra being the oldest of the texts on the theory of drama. The dramatic form in India has worked through different traditions-the epic, the folk, the mythical, the realistic etc. The experience of colonization, however, may be responsible for the discontinuation of an indigenous native Indian dramatic form.During the immediate years following independence, dramatists like Mohan Rakesh, Badal Sircar, Girish Karnad, Vijay Tendulkar, Dharamvir Bharati et al laid the foundations of an autonomous “Indian” aesthetic-a body of plays that helped shape a new “National” dramatic tradition. It goes to their credit to inaugurate an Indian dramatic tradition that interrogated the socio-political complexities of the nascent Indian nation. However, it’s pertinent to point out that these playwrights often wrote in their own regional languages like Marathi, Kannada, Bengali and Hindi and only later translated their plays into English. Indian English drama per se finds its first practitioners in Shri Aurobindo, Harindarnath Chattopadhyaya, and A.S.P Ayyar. In the post- independence era, Asif Curriumbhoy (b.1928) is a pioneer of Indian English drama with almost thirty plays in his repertoire. However, owing to the spectacular success of the Indian English novel, Drama in English remained a minor genre and did not find its true voice until the arrival of Mahesh Dattani. -

Policies of Survival: Where Happiness Epitomises Freedom... 85 Ars Artium: An International Peer Reviewed-cum-Refereed Research Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences ISSN (Online) : 2395-2423 • ISSN (Print) : 2319-7889 Vol. 6, January 2018 Pp. 85-93 http://www.arsartium.org Policies of Survival: Where Happiness Epitomises Freedom: A Study of Mahasweta Devi’s Urvashi O Johnny –Goutam Karmakar* Abstract The post-independent era of Indian English literature witnesses the emergence of feminine sensibility, and women writers like Kamala Markandaya, Anita Desai, Kamala Das, Manju Kapur, Shashi Deshpande, Mamta Kalia, Gauri Deshpande, Nayantara Sahgal, Bharati Mukherjee, Arundhati Roy, Anita Nair, Eunice De Souza, Sujata Bhatt, Shobha De, Mahasweta Devi and many others try their best for the literary emancipation of not only women but also the marginalized and exploited sections of the society. Among these writers, Mahasweta Devi is one such who recreates a span of history which contains the mechanics of exploitation, depressed communities of India, politico- economical policies of the upper class and social evils and maladies, and for showing all these, she falls in the category of those writers writing in their native languages whose writings are translated regularly into English. An essentially human vision rooted in her imparts a grand encroachment on the contemporary literary scenario. She sings for those whose songs of suffering, prayer, despair, protest and disillusionment are unheard. In her works she tries to give voice to the voiceless and shows the ways to survive and protest. Her Urvashi O Johnny is one such play that deals with survival policies through the character of non-living Urvashi and her owner Johnny, a ventriloquist.
