n In 1989 a fabulous new comedy appeared on the Broadway Director's stage direct from London. It was a surprising one-actress play in which the actress was not a tragic historic figure, was not a great Notes achiever from the past, was not a president or national hero at all; she was a middle-class, middle-age British mother and housewife. She was Shirley Bradshaw, formerly Shirley Valentine, and she took New York by storm. The experience we had working on the play was wonderful because of the sensitive and honest, yet incredibly amusing way Shirley views her life. She desperately wants to be the woman she was before the people in her life, the system and society began to push her down. She wants to be the woman who wasn't afraid to face the world and wasn't afraid to take chances. She wants to be Shirley Valentine again. And in this yearning, with shrewd wisdom and appealing wit, she touches on our human condition. To me, £ Shirley is a hero. * I have the distinct honor of knowing our Shirley Valentine, Elizabeth A. Sanchez-Franklin, very well; she is my bride of almost Al Franklin 15 years. We have worked together many times on artistic and Executive Director community projects, have lived a life in the theatre together and together we have raised two beautiful sons. In making the decision to cast Beth in this role, I simultaneously made her very happy and very nervous. A one-woman play will do that to an actress. But she knows how proud I am of her, and how much confidence I have in her as an actress, a woman and a human being. We had fun mount ing this production and found that it was not so different from shows with more than one actress. Except, of course, that she worked alone at every rehearsal. And that she went home with the director every night. And that she served me chips and egg every day. I am honored that you have joined us for this performance. I know you'll find a great deal of delight in this play, as well as a £ great deal of wisdom. Shirley is an enthralling and commanding^ character who will have you laughing with joyful recognition one moment and moved to tears the next. She is a wonderful creation, filled with good humor and moving insights, and as an audience, we'll all want her to triumph over the mediocrity that is smother ing her. You will want Shirley Valentine to rediscover herself and, in doing so, steal your heart! Thank you for coming to the Civic Theatre; I look forward to seeing you in the lobby.
