Virginia Street Reno, NV 89501 Box office: (775) 323-3221 Email: [email protected] Mission -To Create & Share the Experience of Innovative Theatre History Brüka Theatre began in 1992 as a small group of professional theatre artists who combined their artistic vision in the pursuit of high quality theatre. The company initially produced educational audience participation theatre for children, in the format of original adaptations of classic fairy tales, which later developed into our current format of original theatre for children that is written and performed by members of the company. In 1996 Brüka Theatre expanded its operations to include contemporary, classic and original productions for adult and family audiences. The combined success from these ventures enabled the company to establish it’s featured location in the Masonic Building on the corner of First and Virginia in the heart of Reno’s downtown Arts District. Renaissance Projects officially merged with Brüka in 1999. The company opened Sub-Brüka as a second performance space in the basement of the Masonic Building in 2000. 2017/2018 SEASON Play Author Director The Real Inspector Hound Tom Stoppard John Blomberg The Biggest Little Theatre Festival Brüka Original Various Buttcracker VIII – The Biggest Little Brüka Original Mary Bennett The Lion in Winter James Goldman Diane Peters Take Five – Making Art in Reno Brüka Fundraiser Nation of Two Tom Burmester Chase McKenna The Frog Prince Theatre for Children Brüka Original Mary Bennett Hedwig and the Angry Inch Mitchell/Trask Bill Ware Abducting Diana Dario Fo Mary Bennett The Untamed Bud Perry Johnson/Kelly 2016/2017 SEASON Play Author Director Stage Kiss Sarah Ruhl Christopher Wilson The Biggest Little Theatre Festival Brüka Original Various Buttcracker VII – Ozmosis Brüka Original Mary Bennett Happy Birthday Wanda June Kurt Vonnegut John Blomberg The Bremen Town Musicians Theatre for Children Mary Bennett Mary Bennett The Untamed (SUB) Bud Perry Johnson/Klino Dorothy Parker – Words to Live By Mary Bennett Mary Bennett Tooth of Crime Sam Shepherd Dave Richards Stupid F**king Bird Aaron Posner Holly Natwora Next to Normal Brian Yorkey John Frederick Tax ID# 88-0389497 Brüka Theatre of the Sierra 99 N. WILLY RUSSELL Willy Russell’s career spans more than four decades; born in Liverpool in 1947, he left school at 15, became a women’s hairdresser, part-time singer/songwriter performing on the local folk scene, before returning to education and becoming a teacher Whilst at St Katharine’s College, Willy began writing drama and, in 1972, took a programme of three one-act plays to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they were seen by writer John McGrath. Suitably impressed, McGrath recommended Russell to the Liverpool Everyman who commissioned the adaptation, When The Reds… -which was Willy Russell’s first professional work for theatre. Russell’s breakthrough work, commissioned by Liverpool Everyman, “John Paul George Ringo…and Bert” transferred to the West End winning Best Musical - Evening Standard and London Theatre Critics Awards. Alongside further stage works, One For The Road ( 1976 ), Stags and Hens ( 1978 ) Russell proved himself a gifted and accomplished screenwriter with television films, Death of A Young Man, Daughters of Albion, Our Day Out and One Summer all consolidating his reputation as a writer whose work could reach a wide audience without ever compromising the seriousness that lies at the heart of all his work. Commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Educating Rita is now a modern classic. Since its 1980 premiere and long West End run, the play has been translated and produced in almost every part of the globe garnering awards both for its author and for many of the actors who have played the roles of Rita and Frank. Returning to the Liverpool Everyman in 1986, Willy Russell created the iconic Shirley Valentine which went on to an acclaimed West End run, earning Olivier awards for both its author, Willy and star, Pauline Collins, before transferring to New York for a highly successful Broadway run and a Tony Best Actress award for its star, Pauline Collins.

  • Contemporary British Coming-Of-Age Films (1979 to the Present)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Royal Holloway - Pure 1 Contemporary British Coming-of-Age Films (1979 to the Present) Philippa Zielfa Maslin A thesis submitted to Royal Holloway, University of London, in accordance with the requirements of a Ph.D. in the Department of Media Arts 2 Declaration of Authorship I declare that the work in this thesis was carried out in accordance with the regulations of Royal Holloway, University of London. This work is original, except where indicated by special reference in the text, and no part of the thesis has been submitted for any other academic award. Any views expressed in the thesis are those of the author. Signed: Philippa Zielfa Maslin Date: 19th January 2018 3 Abstract Locating itself in relation to existing work on youth in, primarily American, cinema, the thesis questions the analytical usefulness of conceptualising the ‘youth/teen film’ as a genre and, instead, seeks to establish the value of analysing the ‘coming-of-age film’ as a genre involving the employment of adolescent protagonists. In setting out to do so, it focuses on films which are set in Britain, made from 1979 onwards, and rarely discussed as coming-of-age films (or, indeed, youth/teen films), but which may be seen to benefit from such a critical approach. Following a survey of a range of anthropological, biological, historical, juridical, psychoanalytic, psychological and sociological approaches to adolescence, as well as scholarship on the literary precursor of the coming-of-age film, the Bildungsroman, and on the relationship between adolescence and cinema, a working definition of the coming-of- age genre is proposed.

  • Educating Rita
Educating Rita Thursday 15 – Saturday 31 October An Oldham Coliseum Theatre Production Written by Willy Russell Directed by Iqbal Khan Designed by Florence de Maré ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRESS NIGHT: Friday 16 October at 7:30pm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Willy Russell’s comedy about collision between class and culture comes to the Coliseum this October. Frank, a disillusioned career academic, becomes a tutor for the Open University, mainly, to help pay for his prodigious booze habit. He doesn’t know what to expect, but he certainly wasn’t expecting Rita. Rita, whose real name is Susan, is a down-to-earth hairdresser looking to make a better life for herself through English Literature. She doesn’t know what she wants, but she knows she wants more than what she has. Both in and out of the classroom, a relationship develops between them. Rita falls for the world of bohemian privilege that is now open to her, and Frank falls more than a little in love with Rita’s free spirit. But as her confidence grows, Frank begins to worry that her thirst for improvement might bury the fascinating woman who has brought him back from the brink. Willy Russell is a multi-award winning writer also known for Blood Brothers, Our Day Out and Shirley Valentine. Educating Rita won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 1980, with the film adaptation later winning a BAFTA Award. Oldham Coliseum’s production will be directed by Iqbal Khan, who was last in Oldham for 2012’s Manchester Theatre Award winning Snookered. It will star Steven Elliott (Da Vinci’s Demons) as Frank alongside Scarlett Brookes as Rita.
