2018 Rhymoi Catalog ● ● ● ● ● ● In 2003, an album that is performed entirely by bamboo instruments named “Bamboo Banquet” was created. It is not only being the first record in its field that shakes earth and heaven, but also announcing the grand birth of a new music label. ---Rhymoi Music In the past several years, Rhymoi Music never gave up striving for perfection and never regretting investing on music. It displays and diffuses Chinese culture with different appearances, themes and styles that have won a reputation in the music circle. From the original work“National Beauty”, the powerful drumming of“Rhythmize Heartstrings”, to the grand and soul-stirring “Three Kingdoms”, Rhymoi Music taps the unique charm of traditional culture from distinctive angles and developed it into peculiar themes. And each piece of the music becomes a “flowing architecture” after being elaborated. From the soul-awaking “Glimpses Of Tibet”, to the reminiscent “Dream Of An Opera” and the reborn classic “Nirvana Of The Phoenix”, Rhymoi Music always appears pure and refine, performing the music close even to the finest emotion, evoking many touching memories. Every piece of work and every step of Rhymoi Music drew more and more attention from the music circle and audiences all over the world. In the past four years, the works of Rhymoi Music have been charted many times in the Top Ten Hi-Fi Records nationwide, some have even been invited to MIDEM in Cannes(The biggest international records expo.),which later also won the China Gold Record-the highest government award of records in China. The reputation and the record sales volume successfully show the audience’s preference and prove the oldest fable that” heaven is bound to reward diligence”. The logo of Rhymoi Music is a unfledged but fluttering bird, soaring high towards the sky. It represents a simple dream with a little innocence, cuteness and touching. The slow bird starts early, depicts Rhymoi Music. People may regard it as modest, however Rhymoi Music looks at it as review and encouragement, it’s the spiritual source of cheering up. Without proud long-ranged foundation as others, we can only rely on ourselves and make unremitting effort. Without so- called “backgrounds”, we can only contribute much more time and efforts since we believe that heaven is bound to reward diligence. Without above all, we still have our own touching and cheering creed---create music with heart! Rhymoi Music is more like a producing group than a record company. It is a creative group full of expression, unrestrained music soul and the rigid art spirit. The creativity here does not only means writing notes and melodies on scores, focusing on a single instrument play, but also a journey combined of enthusiasm and idea, happiness and torment. Every piece of work is generated from a certain touch. Every creating experience refines and polishes time and time again. The first time----maybe a touch from a song during the long journey; maybe the tears of a seventy-year-old player while he’s on stage; maybe the inspiration a musician gets during a jam session with his best friends. From the unexpected inspiration, the conflict of minds, to the choosing of the subject and program...every idea full of wisdom comes out from discord, enlightenment and integration of passion and subversion. The second time---Masters! We invited famous composers that best match the record’s style for producing; we invited the renowned players as well as the best recording engineer to participate in the production; and we also invited world class studio for completion. And we spent even more time in recording. Any tiny inadequacy will be cancel and recorded all over again, only to make it perfect. The last time---deliberates obey the choice of words and the construction of the text, polishing and engraving the graphic design. Not only the music, but also the record itself is an exquisite masterpiece. The Rhymoi Music group pursues the perfection of every detail, every record is sailed abroad. Despite the high cost, it makes the last production overseas, till it becomes a work of art. This kind of exquisite record is not only an art merchandise, but a work combines of inspiration, life, soul, spirit and desire to express itself. From tradition to modern, from origin to world music, in the list of Rhymoi Music’s production, each one is different from another, however all contend in beauty and fascination. Although the origin spirit never changes and the taste of art never moves or retreats. “The Dragon Experience”, “Nirvana Of The Phoenix”, “National Beauty”, “Glimpses Of Tibet”……just these names shall give you an unique “Chinese flavor”. Rhymoi Music aims to express Chinese Music by multiform and multiangle, by this mean is to draw more and more attention to it from all over the world. By abandoning the allure of convenient business interest, Rhymoi Music sticks to its original spirit, taking roots from the five-thousand years of Chinese music. We promote culture and integration of Chinese music into the world. Rhymoi Music shall continue creating and promoting Chinese music masterpiece, making a unique name card for China, which lets the people in China and abroad like its music. China Email: [email protected] Abstract: Although the Zushiye (Grand Masters) belief is in some degree similar with the Worship of Ancestors, it obviously has its own characteristics. Before the mid-twentieth century, the belief of King Zhuang of Zhou (696BC-682BC), the Zushiye of many talking and singing sectors, shows that except for the group cult, the Zushiye belief which is bodily practiced in the form of kowtow as a basic action also dispersed in the group everyday life system, including acknowledging a master (Baishi), art-learning (Xueyi), marriage, performance, identity censorship (Pandao) and master-apprentice relationship, etc. Furthermore, the Zushiye belief is not only an explicit rite but also an implicit one: a thinking symbol of the entire society, special groups and the individuals, and a method to express the self and the world in inter-group communication. The Zushiye belief is not only “the nature of mind” or “the mentality”, but also a metaphor of ideas and eagerness for equality, as well as relevant behaviors. Music-Based TV Talent Shows in China: Celebrity and Meritocracy in the Post-Reform Society by Wei Huang B. A., Huaqiao University, 2013 Extended Essays Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the School of Communication (Dual Degree in Global Communication) Faculty of Communication, Art & Technology © Wei Huang 2015 SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Summer 2015 Approval Name: Wei Huang Degree: Master of Arts (Communication) Title: Music-Based TV Talent Shows in China: Celebrity and Meritocracy in the Post-Reform Society Examining Committee: Program Director: Yuezhi Zhao Professor Frederik Lesage Senior Supervisor Assistant Professor School of Communication Simon Fraser University Baohua Wang Supervisor Professor School of Communication Communication University of China Date Defended/Approved: August 31, 2015 ii Abstract Meritocracy refers to the idea that whatever our social position at birth, society should offer the means for those with the right “talent” to “rise to top.” In context of celebrity culture, it could refer to the idea that society should allow all of us to have an equal chance to become celebrities. This article argues that as a result of globalization and consumerism in the post-reform market economy, the genre of music-based TV talent shows has become one of the most popular TV genres in China and has at the same time become a vehicle of a neoliberal meritocratic ideology. The rise of the ideology of meritocracy accompanied the pace of market reform in post-1980s China and is influenced by the loss of social safety nets during China’s transition from a socialist to a market economy.

By drawing on Visual Grammar as well as frameworks of intersemiotic complementarity, the paper examines how various semiotic resources, namely, the visual, audio and verbal, construe meanings and how they work together to create synergy in the video. It is concluded that the deployment of various modes in this dynamic discourse contribute to constructing city images that are glorious in history, unique in culture, picturesque in landscapes, innovative in spirits, vital in city life, and beautiful in people’s hearts. The video also proves to be effective in engaging and aligning the viewers, thus functioning as a vital tool to market the city. It is hoped that this paper will provide a new perspective for semiotic studies of promotional videos in China. Keywords: multimodal discourse analysis, systemic functional grammar, promotional video, Hangzhou 1. • The Legend, the Play, and the Movie the Chinese University Press
    I. Introduction: The Legend, the Play, and the Movie Following the Communist conquest of the Chinese mainland and the estab- lishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, the Chinese movie industry (studios, distribution, and cinemas) was quickly nationalized.1 Like all other media, film was expected to serve the Revolution. As a result, the majority of movies produced in the 1950s celebrated China’s struggle for national independence against foreign foes and inside China the struggle of Materials the laboring masses against their masters. Against this background, the block- buster success in 1956 and thereafter of the 1955 movie Married to a Heavenly Immortal (Tianxian pei 天仙配; released as The Marriage of the Fairy Princess, but also referred to as The Heavenly Match or The Fairy Couple) is even more Copyrighted remarkable. The movie was based on the legend of the filial son Dong Yong 董永. But filial piety (xiao 孝), the foundational value of traditional Chinese Press: society, by this time had already been decried for almost half a century as the source of all of China’s trials and tribulations. Moreover, the movie, closely based on the Huangmei 黃梅 Opera play of the same title, and starring the Huangmei Opera performersUniversity Yan Fengying 嚴鳳英 (1930–1968) and Wang Shaofang 王少舫 (1920–1986), was not an example of the realistic staging pre- ferred by socialist realism—the Soviet-inspired dominant doctrine in the arts. Chinese From the very beginning, both its scriptwriter Sang Hu 桑弧 (1916–2004) and its director ShiThe Hui 石揮 (1915–1957) conceived of the movie as “a fairy-tale film with song and dance.” The Huangmei Opera play Married to a Heavenly Immortal was a great success at the East China Theater Festival of October 1954.2 At that time Huangmei Opera was not a prestigious form of traditional opera.
