THE LONG RED THREAD HOW DEMOCRATIC DOMINANCE GAVE WAY TO REPUBLICAN ADVANTAGE IN U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ELECTIONS, 1964-2018 by Kyle Kondik A thesis submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Baltimore, Maryland September 2019 © 2019 Kyle Kondik All Rights Reserved Abstract This history of U.S. House elections from 1964-2018 examines how Democratic dominance in the House prior to 1994 gave way to a Republican advantage in the years following the GOP takeover. Nationalization, partisan realignment, and the reapportionment and redistricting of House seats all contributed to a House where Republicans do not necessarily always dominate, but in which they have had an edge more often than not. This work explores each House election cycle in the time period covered and also surveys academic and journalistic literature to identify key trends and takeaways from more than a half-century of U.S. House election results in the one person, one vote era. • Print Journalism's Framing of Female Candidates in The
Joining the World of Journals Welcome to the nation’s first and, to our knowledge, only undergraduate research journal in communi- cations. We discovered this fact while perusing the Web site of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which lists and links to the 60 or so undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/ugjournal. html). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and some are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Furman University Electronic Journal in Undergraduate Mathematics). The Elon Journal is the first to focus on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communi- cations. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The second issue was published in Fall 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues. Articles and other materials in the journal may be freely downloaded, reproduced and redistributed without permission as long as the author and source are properly cited. Student authors retain copyright own- ership of their works. Celebrating Student Research This journal reflects what we enjoy seeing in our students -- intellectual maturing.

  • Congressional Scorecard 109Th Congress 2 0 0 5 - 2006
IRANIAN AMERICAN POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE Congressional Scorecard 109th Congress 2 0 0 5 - 2006 Please visit us on the web at www.iranianamericanpac.org About IAPAC IAPAC is a registered bipartisan political action committee that contributes to candidates for public office who are attuned to the domestic concerns of the Iranian American community. IAPAC focuses exclusively on domestic policy issues such as civil rights and immigration, and it encourages Americans of Iranian descent to actively participate in civic affairs. Mission • To support and promote the election of candidates for federal, state and local office, regardless of party affiliation, who are attuned to the domestic needs and issues of the Iranian American community • To support and promote Iranian American participation in civic affairs Issue Advocacy Civil Liberties: Balancing Civil Liberties and National Security in the Post-9/11 Era. Protecting our security and ensuring that the government does not infringe upon basic constitutional rights have long been important issues for civil libertarians and certain ethnic communities. IAPAC believes that our government must take the appropriate measures to protect our nation from further atrocities, but that it can do so without eliminating basic constitutional rights. Immigration: Immigration reform that is driven by proper national security concerns and remedies based on a fair and accurate appraisal of deficiencies in the immigration process, and not simply on national origin. Specifically, IAPAC advocates for a fair and measured execution of federal regulations governing the issuance of non-immigrant and immigrant visas for Iranian nationals. Congressional Scorecard The IAPAC 2005-2006 Congressional Scorecard rates members of Congress on votes and other positions taken in the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 109th Congress, which affect the domestic needs of the Iranian American community.

  • Congress of the United States Washington, DC 20515
Congress of the United States Washington, DC 20515 April 3, 2009 The Honorable Barack Obama President of the United States The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: Vital U.S. interests in North Africa are increasingly challenged by growing regional instability. Terrorist incidents in the Maghreb have increased by more than 400 percent since September 11, 2001, and the emergence of Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has led to a spike in terror attacks against both symbols of national government and institutions reflecting cooperation between the Arab world and the West. The single greatest obstacle impeding the security cooperation necessary to combat this transnational threat is the unresolved territorial dispute over the Western Sahara. In addition to bringing peace to the people of Morocco and to the Saharawi, and shrinking the space for global terrorist elements to recruit and operate, resolving the conflict in the Western Sahara would have considerable economic benefits and improve the lives of millions of Africans. The entire Maghreb would finally be free to pursue serious economic integration, attract increased foreign investment, and realize the potential for regional trade and cooperation. All of these important goals are currently blocked by the continued conflict and the tension it creates between states in the region. In 2007, at the urging of the United States and the United Nations, Morocco , our oldest ally and partner for peace in the Middle East, initiated a ground-breaking autonomy plan to resolve the more than 30 year-old conflict within the framework of self-determination for the Western Sahara .

  • Midterm Elections
Immigration and the 2010 Midterm Elections INTRODUCTION Immigration had a significant impact on the 2010 elections and is now a top election issue. Certainly the economy and unemployment were the dominant issues across the nation, but more candidates campaigned on immigration than in past elections. They posted position statements on their campaign websites, dedicated precious resources to radio and television commercials on the issue, and some even used the issue to attack their opponents in a manner that may have made the crucial difference in the outcome. In addition, immigration was a frequent topic of debate, not only in official settings, but at campaign stops. Often the question asked was whether a candidate supported Arizona’s new immigration enforcement law, SB 1070. The popularity of SB 1070, combined with brutal drug cartel violence along the Southern border, a high unemployment rate, and strong voter disapproval of President Obama’s handling of the immigration issue, meant that candidates could not avoid the issue as easily as in previous elections. To be sure, there were candidates who were intentionally vague or entirely silent on immigration. This was especially so in close races where committing to amnesty would likely alienate independent voters critical to pulling out a victory. In other instances, candidates would give conflicting statements, such as voicing their opposition to amnesty while in the same breath supporting “comprehensive” immigration reform (interpreted by voters as amnesty). In other cases, candidates simply didn’t take an official stand. Overall, however, FAIR’s midterm election analysis shows that support for immigration controls was a common denominator among winning candidates.
