  • DJ Skills the Rise of the Hip-Hop DJ 3
The Rise of the Hip-Hop DJ 1 74 The Rise of The Hip-hop DJ DJs were Hip-hop’s original architects, and remain crucial to its contin- ued development. Hip-hop is more than a style of music; it’s a culture. As with any culture, there are various artistic expressions of Hip-hop, the four principal expressions being: • visual art (graffiti) • dance (breaking, rocking, locking, and popping, collectively known in the media as “break dancing”) • literature (rap lyrics and slam poetry) • music (DJing and turntablism) Unlike the European Renaissance or the Ming Dynasty, Hip-hop is a culture that is very much alive and still evolving. Some argue that Hip-hop is the most influential cultural movement in history, point- ing to the globalization of Hip-hop music, fashion, and other forms of expression. Style has always been at the forefront of Hip-hop. Improvisation is called free styling, whether in rap, turntablism, breaking, or graf- fiti writing. Since everyone is using the essentially same tools (spray paint for graffiti writers, microphones for rappers and beat boxers, their bodies for dancers, and two turntables with a mixer for DJs), it’s the artists’ personal styles that set them apart. It’s no coincidence that two of the most authentic movies about the genesis of the move- ment are titled Wild Style and Style Wars. There are also many styles of writing the word “Hip-hop.” The mainstream media most often oscillates between “hip-hop” and “hip hop.” The Hiphop Archive at Harvard writes “Hiphop” as one word, 2 DJ Skills The Rise of the Hip-Hop DJ 3 with a capital H, embracing KRS-ONE’s line of reasoning that “Hiphop Kool DJ Herc is a culture with its own foundation narrative, history, natives, and 7 In 1955 in Jamaica, a young woman from the parish of Saint Mary mission.” After a great deal of input from many people in the Hip-hop community, I’ve decided to capitalize the word but keep the hyphen, gave birth to a son who would become the father of Hip-hop.

  • Emily Finer Dombey in Zhitomir for MLR Sept 2018
Emily Finer, University of St Andrews Dombey in Zhitomir, Pip in Taganrog: Reading Dickens ‘as if for life’ in Russia Abstract Many Russian writers have been eager to demonstrate their intense childhood attachment to the novels of Charles Dickens. This essay focuses on the narrative strategies used by Vladimir Korolenko (1853-1921) and Nelli Morozova (1924-2015) in their autobiographies to convey the importance of reading Dickens in their formation as writers. It argues that David Copperfield offers a useful model for understanding how Korolenko and Morozova write about reading, and that, rather than distancing Dickens and his characters from their global readership, translations increase proximity and facilitate empathetic readings. Dombey in Zhitomir, Pip in Taganrog: Reading Dickens ‘as if for life’ in Russia It is not surprising that authors describe their early immersion in fictional worlds as positive and even therapeutic in their autobiographies. This essay examines three autobiographical texts, from England, the Russian Empire, and the Soviet Union, focusing on the narrative strategies used to write about childhood reading. In David Copperfield (1850), Charles Dickens describes Davey’s early interaction with novels as an experience both escapist and comforting.1 Vladimir Korolenko’s short autobiographical story, ‘My First Acquaintance with Dickens’ (1912), portrays his first encounter with a translation of Dombey and Son as a catalyst in his development as a reader.2 Nelli Morozova structures her entire 1 Charles Dickens, David Copperfield (London: Nonesuch Press, 1937), p. 54. 2 V. • Grosvenor School Inspired 15 July
PRESS RELEASE Grosvenor School Inspired A group exhibition of contemporary linocuts, inspired by the renowned Grosvenor School of Art style 15 th July – 28 th August 2016 Private view: Thursday 14 th July, 6-8pm Looking ahead for Brook’s Budleigh gallery we are excited to announce the upcoming summer exhibition, Grosvenor School Inspired , featuring artists: Paul Cleden, Lisa Takahashi and Andrew Pavitt. The British Grosvenor School of Modern Art was opened in 1925 by Claude Flight and Iain MacNab. Flight taught the art of lino-cutting and MacNab taught wood engraving. Other teachers included Cyril Power who lectured on architecture, Sybil Andrews as Secretary and Lill Tschudi attended as a young Swiss student. Claude Flight, a former engineer, taught students to produce multi-colour linocut prints by using different blocks for each colour. Flight’s work celebrated the speed, movement and hustle of modern life in the 1920s and 30s, with dominant themes of sport and transport. Many contemporary artists attempt to capture the essence of the Grosvenor School by producing these incredibly complex angular linocuts, few however succeed in the way that Paul Cleden, Lisa Takahashi and Andrew Pavitt do. Their prints notably capture the spirit of the genre whilst putting their own individual styling and nuances into the work. ‘My linocuts are in the tradition of Lill Tschudi, Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power, and more recently Michael Rothenstein and Edward Bawden’, quotes exhibiting artist Paul Cleden. ‘ I love to look at figurative movement; consequently sports are often featured because of the dynamic shapes and action, but equally a crowd of rush hour people leaving a train, or people browsing Dorchester market are wonderful inspiration, whenever I see a crowd my sketchbook twitches.’ Paul is an illustrator, printmaker and writer, originally graduated from London, now lives and works in Dorset.

All our readers will wish him a full recovery. We are indebted to him for many services to the Society. In this issue we are glad to print a Methodist Tribute to Bernard Lord Manning; Revd. J. M. Turner is on the staff of Queen's College, Birmingham. Mr. Spinks provides an unusual liturgical document with commentary. Mr. Caplan has already contributed an article to the Journal (May 1973). Arundel URC has reminded us that 1974 was the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the death of George Macdonald who was minister there from 1850 to 1853. A commemorative exhibition and service have taken place in Arundel.
