The LGBT Health and Inclusion Project Locally Available Sexual Health Materials – A Consultation with Bisexual People The LGBT Health and Inclusion Project NHS Sussex and Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC), have commissioned a consortium of organisations providing services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people in the city to conduct a series of consultations with local LGBT people. The aim is to use the information gathered to feed into local service commissioning, planning and delivery. The partner agencies are: Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard, THT South, MindOut, Allsorts Youth Project, Brighton Bothways and the Clare Project. The consortium has employed a worker to coordinate the project, known as the LGBT Health and Inclusion Project (LGBT HIP). Please note, the following report presents information about the consultation and engagement work conducted by LGBT HIP and should not be taken as a position statement of any of LGBT HIPs Consortium partners. Background A local LGBT action-research project (Count Me In Too) presented a number of important findings in relation to sexual health and bisexual people.1 The research indicated that bisexual participants perceived that sexual health information available locally did not cater to their needs as bisexual people, and a significant proportion (28%) said that it was not appropriate to their sexual practices.2 The LGBT HIP consortium therefore identified a need to consult bisexual people about sexual health information available locally. The aim of the initiative was: 1. To consult bisexual people about their perceptions of the range of sexual health resources available locally and to make recommendations for further development. -

We have made our members and supporters aware of the consultation and we understand that a significant number of them have responded to the on-line survey. However, many of the questions there are not applicable to an active travel campaign group such as GoBike and thus we offer the following comments: It is important that the High Street and Saltmarket are revitalised and shops, cafes and businesses are attracted to the area but the street environment must be radically improved to encourage people to walk and cycle along the street and spend time there. Currently the street is a four-lane highway with cars, vans, buses travelling through. So what must be done? The pavements must be widened and their surface improved, with unnecessary street furniture removed, to encourage people to walk and window shop, perhaps even sit outside a cafe. Cycle lanes must be introduced; people already cycle along the street, dodging the parked vehicles and those that are speeding and their journeys will be made less hazardous by the provision of cycle lanes. -

Established in 1991, it has grown from a grass-roots group with no funding and completely reliant on volunteers into a unique, highly respected, professional and multi-award winning organisation with an ambitious vision and clear aims. A Library, Archive and Accredited Museum, GWL delivers life-changing and innovative programmes of public events and creative learning opportunities. Open to all, it is visited by people from around the world and around the corner: growing, and thriving, with the support of and ‘ownership’ by the diverse communities it serves. After conference last year, we geared ourselves up to fight for a change in government. With a strong message and pledges supporting LGBT equality, our members door-stepped on behalf of LGBT Labour parliamentary candidates, as well as supporting Labour candidates all over Britain. It was with shock and disbelief that we woke up on 8 May to find that we had a majority Conservative government. The only positive note was that UKIP only gained one seat. Following the general election, the Labour party has gone through its own leadership election and throughout the process our members were engaged in the debate. -

THON WEY Aspects ofScottish lesbian and gay activism, 1968 to 1992 By Brian Dempsey Abstract The following paper charts the political campaign history of Scottish Lesbian and Gay activists over approximately two decades. It pays particular reference to organisations such as the Scottish Minorities Group (1969-78) and its successor, the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group (1978-92). These self organised Lesbian and Gay groups - which continue today as Outright Scotland - represented an unusual, and often anomalous, continuity as they frequently worked alongside rather more short-lived groups. One thing at least can be deduced with fair certainty from these curiously diverse impressions. The favourable ones were those of people who had stayed with friends and been taken about; the un- 77 favourable, of people who had been stranded in hotels. Glasgow does not cater well for strangers. To arrive in Glasgow on a wet Saturday by way of Cowlairs or St. Rollox, and spend a lonely week-end in a hotel, is an experience which the native cannot contemplate without a shudder. It would have been more tolerable fifty years ago, when the city was about half its present size and there were charming rural nooks within half an hour's walk from George Square. -
