  • JM Coetzee and Mathematics Peter Johnston
1 'Presences of the Infinite': J. M. Coetzee and Mathematics Peter Johnston PhD Royal Holloway University of London 2 Declaration of Authorship I, Peter Johnston, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Dated: 3 Abstract This thesis articulates the resonances between J. M. Coetzee's lifelong engagement with mathematics and his practice as a novelist, critic, and poet. Though the critical discourse surrounding Coetzee's literary work continues to flourish, and though the basic details of his background in mathematics are now widely acknowledged, his inheritance from that background has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive and mathematically- literate account. In providing such an account, I propose that these two strands of his intellectual trajectory not only developed in parallel, but together engendered several of the characteristic qualities of his finest work. The structure of the thesis is essentially thematic, but is also broadly chronological. Chapter 1 focuses on Coetzee's poetry, charting the increasing involvement of mathematical concepts and methods in his practice and poetics between 1958 and 1979. Chapter 2 situates his master's thesis alongside archival materials from the early stages of his academic career, and thus traces the development of his philosophical interest in the migration of quantificatory metaphors into other conceptual domains. Concentrating on his doctoral thesis and a series of contemporaneous reviews, essays, and lecture notes, Chapter 3 details the calculated ambivalence with which he therein articulates, adopts, and challenges various statistical methods designed to disclose objective truth.

Jortner, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2005 This dissertation, prepared towards the completion of a Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, examines “Yankee Theatre” in America and London through a post-colonial lens from 1787 to 1855. Actors under consideration include: Charles Mathews, James Hackett, George Hill, Danforth Marble and Joshua Silsbee. These actors were selected due to their status as iconic performers in “Yankee Theatre.” The Post-Revolutionary period in America was filled with questions of national identity. Much of American culture came directly from England. American citizens read English books, studied English texts in school, and watched English theatre. They were inundated with English culture and unsure of what their own civilization might look like.

138 THE HISTORY OF SURGERY IN QUEENSLAND [By C. A. C. LEGGETT, M.B.E., M.B., M.S., F.R.A.C.S., F.A.C.S.] (Read before a Meeting of the Society and members of the medical profession at A.M.A. House, Brisbane, on 29 August 1974.) It is my intention in this paper to deal with some aspects of surgical practice in Queensland from the time of separa tion from New South Wales in 1859 until the present time. I will talk of some of the surgeons who practised in Queens land during this century of time and will discuss in a critical fashion some of the factors which influenced the standards of surgical practice. The memory of the tragic death of Ballow at Dunwich from typhus fever in 1850 was stUl fresh in memory when the story begins. When the story ends complex operations are common place and open heart sur- l-irM Brisbane Hospital. Built as convict hospital (1827-1839). Used until 1879 when Supreme Court was built on site. From the Oxley Memorial Library collection. Dr. Leggett is a senior Brisbane surgeon who has made extensive research into local medical history. 139 gery is being carried out in Brisbane with results comparable to any obtained anywhere in Australia. I will talk of Barton and Bell, Cannan and O'Doherty in the earlier years. I wUl observe that Joseph Bancroft, scientist and naturalist, practised early neurosurgery! Special emphasis will be placed on the life and work of Sandford Jackson. This man came to Brisbane when the first glim merings of light were beginning to appear after the long night of surgical darkness.

GLASGOW JOHN SMITH & SON LIMITED 1918 Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2013 http://archive.org/details/glasgowacademyro1918glas PREFACE. 'T'HIS, the first edition of the Glasgow Academy Roll A of Service, contains the names of all x\cademicals who are known to have served in the Great War. It is necessarily imperfect, as many names must have been omitted : but now that the book is in the hands of those interested, a wider co-operation of aid may be looked for, and it may be hoped that the final edition will be as complete as such a work can be. Readers are earnestly requested to note any omissions or mistakes, and to communicate with Major Couper, O.T.C.. Glasgow Academy. On his shoulders has fallen the immense labour of compiling this work, and only those who have had practical experience know the amount of toil that is involved in such a task.
