There were times when I could not put pen to paper. The activity and its investments were testing. Thoughts, feelings, emotions, and imaginings were difficult to capture. The right words were not forthcoming. Sentences, paragraphs, I and sections proved to be even more difficult. There were times when felt isolated. I had no true sense of belonging. I felt I was up against an establishment, up against convention, and I felt lost, yearning to arrive I somewhere, to be housed by someone. There were times when I felt was doing this project for someone else and not for myself. It simply became an activity, a chore that I had to coax myself into doing. I was told by some that it was a means to a greater end that I just had to learn to struggle and cope with. There were times when I became my worst critic, even more so than those who were actually my critics. There were times when I wished I could start all over again and go down a different path, perhaps one that did not involve studying for a doctorate degree. But here I am now, completing the final words, the final sentences, the final paragraphs, and the final section of my project. I have arrived, and I feel as though I have arrived. The project and its process made me stronger, more confident, and a more faithful believer in what it seeks to do, in what it says. I began this project in the face of scepticism, and now I complete it knowing that it needed to be done. This would have never happened without the support of a number of significant social actors. At University of Glasgow, I would like to first and foremost thank my thesis supervisor, Barbara Littlewood. Barbara took on this project with an open mind and proved to be, to say the very least, a careful, critical reader throughout its conception. She gave me space when I needed space, she encouraged me when I needed encouragement, she reassured me when I Acknowledgments iii needed reassurance, she gave me refuge from the thesis when I needed refuge, and she strengthened the thesis when and where it needed strengthened. She always had references and photocopies in hand, and her continued interest in my project kept it alive. I could not have completed it without her support. I would also like to thank Susana Carro- Ripalda, who was literally parachuted in towards the end of the project as a second thesis supervisor. Susana was a scrupulous reader of final draft chapters, and she provided very useful comments and suggestions on subjects that were not her specialisation. The interlocutors who participated in my fieldwork on gay male male- to-female drag also informed the thesis. By using a historically-discursive approach— legal archaeology—this study frstly outlines the overarching representations of restorative justice within policy, unpacking their internal organisation. Then, it inter- prets such patterns of knowledge in light of specifc cultural, political and profes- sional transformations involving the Anglo-Welsh criminal justice feld over the last 30 years. Along these lines, it generates a historically documented policy map whilst problematising the taken-for-granted images of restorative justice which populate regulations, codes and laws. This has implications for the study of the relationships between restorative justice policy and practice and for future research on the insti- tutionalisation of this ‘new’ frontier of penality. More generally, the exploration of (unexpected) links between policy, politics and culture, provides material for a criti- cal assessment of how state agencies appropriate community-based and practice-led forms of justice. Reid Recognizing the importance of context with regard to youth agency, this study explores how 8 Black LGBTQ+ youth understand their practices of agency in ballroom culture, an underground Black LGBTQ+ culture. Ballroom was chosen as the backdrop for this scholarly endeavor because it allowed for the study of the phenomenon — Black LGBTQ+ youth agency — in a space where the youth might feel more able to be themselves, especially given that the 2019 Black LGBTQ+ youth report published by the Human Rights Campaign revealed that only 35% of Black LGBTQ+ youth reported being able to “be themselves at school” (Kahn et al., 2019). Thus, instead of asking what is wrong with schools, this study inverted the question to explore what is “right” about ballroom culture in which Black LGBTQ+ youth might practice different kinds of agency due to their intersectional racial and LGBTQ+ identities being recognized and celebrated. Framed by the youth’s understanding of their own agency across different contexts, my research illuminates the complex interrelationships between youth agency, social identity, and context. Extending the literature on youth agency and Black LGBTQ+ youth, the findings of this study suggest that in many ways these youth are always already practicing agency to work toward different ends, and that these different end goals are greatly mediated by the contexts in which they find themselves.

Lundy A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Women’s and Gender Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2019, Jess D. Lundy Abstract Against a tense socio-political backdrop of white supremacy, intensifying pressures of neoliberal fiscal austerity, and queer necropolitics, this thesis addresses performance-based activist forms of place-making for urban-based queer, trans, and gender nonconforming communities of colour. Using participant observation and qualitative interviews with pioneering members of Montréal’s Kiki scene and Ottawa’s emerging Waacking community and interpreting my findings through the theoretical lens of queer of colour theory, critical whiteness studies, queer Latinx performance studies and Chicana feminism, I argue that Kiki subculture, which is maintained by pedagogical processes of ‘each one, teach one’, is instrumental in facilitating i) life-affirming queer kinship bonds, (ii) alternative ways to simultaneously embody and celebrate non- normative gender expression with Black, Asian, and Latinx identity, iii) non-capitalist economies of sharing, and iv) hopeful strategies of everyday community activism and resilience to appropriative processes during economic insecurity and necropolitical turmoil. ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge the members of Montréal’s Kiki scene and Ottawa’s Waacking founder for their willingness to participate in this study despite the understandable reflex to safe-guard their own. I INTRODUCTION Chief Justice, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. I am greatly honoured by the invitation to deliver the Salmond Lecture. I have long known of John Salmond as the author of one of the leading early twentieth century textbooks on torts, and as someone who also wrote about legal history. What I had not known before I worked on this lecture was what a remarkable and varied career he had, as legislator, diplomat and judge as well as legal scholar.1 It is indeed humbling to be giving a lecture named after such a towering figure. John Salmond's work on torts also made him a significant figure in the legal history of his period, something I will return to later. I like to think he would have approved of someone being asked to reflect generally about legal history and its importance. Whether he would have approved of the content of my remarks is another question. Schuyler All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Camp scholarship remains vague. While academics don’t shy away from writing about this form, most exemplify it more than define it. Some even refuse to define it altogether, arguing that any such attempt causes more problems than it solves. So, I ask the question, can we define camp via its structure, theme and character types? After all, we can do so for most other genres, such as the slasher film, the situation comedy or even the country song; therefore, if camp relies upon identifiable character types and proliferates the same theme repeatedly, then, it exists as a narrative system. In exploring this, I find that, as a narrative system, though, camp doesn’t add to the dominant discursive system. Rather, it exists in opposition to it, for camp disseminates the theme that those outside of heteronormativity and acceptability triumph not in spite of but because of what makes them “different,” “othered” or “marginalized.” Camp takes many forms. So, to demonstrate its reliance upon a certain structure, stock character types and a specific theme, I look at the overlaps between seemingly disperate examples of this phenomenon.
