Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck
Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck Low Fidelity – Ready to POP(s) One of my favorite new spots in the city is POP. POP is an “emporium of popular culture” that just has the feel of strolling in and out of decades. I guess one could call it a thrift/antique shop, but to me it’s just a place with a lot of awesome shit. In addition to the shop, POP has a separate room for a gallery/performance space to host events like Low Fidelity. Low Fidelity will have all kinds of cool stuff happening with an exhibition of the works of Bobby Grossman, Doom Destiny collaboration with Shepard Fairey, and a performance by Mr. Buster Poindexter himself – David Johansen. Johansen, who should be in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for fronting the seminal and hugely influential New York Dolls, is a reason to go. Johansen will be accompanied by Rhode Island Hall of Famer Mark Cutler on guitar in what promises to be a special treat of an evening. Don’t miss out on the night that Low Fidelity POP-ed in Providence. Low Fidelity takes place at POP on 219 W Park St. in Providence on October 7. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased here: stores.emporiumofpopularculture.com/low-fidelity- performance-by-david-johansen-exhibition-by-bobby-grossman-doom-destiny-collaboration-with-shepard- fairey. The event will run from 6 – 11pm. Black Pussy Stoner rock goliaths Black Pussy take over the Café at The Parlor to kick off Columbus Day Weekend. -

Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era. -
New York Dolls: Lookin' Fine on Television One of the Reasons
http://moviecitynews.com/2011/11/the-dvd-wrapup-super-8-spy-kids-4-devils-double-sarahs-key-family-tree-trigger- helldriver/ New York Dolls: Lookin’ Fine on Television One of the reasons crusty old rock-’n’-roll journalists take the Hall of Fame less than seriously is the nominating committee’s tendency to honor performers whose ability to sell records trumps innovation, sacrifice and influence. Some musicians and singers have been inducted several times, while others are only considered after the uproar gets too loud to ignore. The fact that such mainstream entertainers as Billy Joel are members and not hard- core acts like the New York Dolls demands loud debate. Watch “Lookin’ Fine on Television” and I think you’ll see the case to be made for the Dolls. Directly influenced by the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and the Faces, the Stooges and MC5, the Dolls may have been the first American band to embrace Britain’s emerging Glam Rock and Punk movements and convincing suburban teenagers that boys have the same right to wear makeup and tease their hair as their girlfriends. Among the bands the Dolls influenced were Alice Cooper, Kiss, Sex Pistols, Motley Crue, the Ramones, Guns N Roses, Poison, R.E.M., Aerosmith and Clash. David Johansen was able to survive by morphing into the persona of lounge lizard Buster Poindexter and making songs for hipper elements among the disco crowd. Filmmakers Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck have compiled clips from the band’s formative years in L.A. and N.Y.C., as well as vintage interviews. -

Audiophile Recording Issue 15
High-fidelity audiophile recording David Johansen & The Harry Smiths What does an Australian recording engineer, a small blues ensemble, and the front- man for a ‘70s glam/punk band have in common? And who the hell is Harry Smith? Greg Simmons finds out… very self-respecting sound engineer should own a couple of high fidelity audiophile recordings. Apart from their intrinsic musical value, they serve as good reality checks and provide welcome relief from the heavily Eprocessed sounds of popular music. They’re also ideal for evaluating audio equipment. But what makes a recording worthy of the title ‘audiophile’? Audiophile recordings are made to appeal to hi-fi enthusiasts and lovers of the natural sound of acoustic instruments. They are typically recorded direct-to- stereo in churches and similar acoustic spaces, and use a very simple but high quality signal path. The purest of all audiophile recordings are made with a single stereo microphone and recorded in one take with no EQ, compression, reverberation or additional process- ing. Beyond this ultra-purist ‘warts and all’ approach, it is not uncommon for an audiophile recording to be edited together from multiple takes, allowing a perfect performance to be created. It is also not unusual to see one or two spot microphones reinforcing the sound of Born to be… an engineer: Barry Wolifson created an audiophile weaker instruments, or giving them more focus in the recording with attitude. recording. A touch of reverb may be added if the recording is too dry, but compression and EQ are usually avoided whenever possible. In comparison to the heavily processed and exciting sounds of popular music, audiophile recordings tend to sound bland, uninteresting, and sometimes even sterile. -
