thousand years.” (WND-1, pg 923) The Soka Gakkai’s Buddhist study movement has enabled countless sincere, ordinary people to illuminate their lives and those of others with the “lantern” of the Mystic Law. Many of our pioneer members were unable to attend school or receive much education during World War II. Studying the Daishonin’s writings and putting them into practice in their own lives, they were f illed with the pride of learning and the joy of human revolution. And they went on themselves to become experts in Buddhist study, helping foster many capable Bodhisattvas of the Earth. This pure stream of individual empowerment through Buddhist learning of unprecedented depth and breadth has now grown into a mighty river of peace education that explores the philosophy of respect for the dignity of life, enriching the lives of people all around the globe. Today, an All-Africa Buddhist Study Exam programme is being implemented in over 30 countries across the African continent. Victorious smiles light the members’ faces after completing their exams, many of them having overcome numerous challenges along the way. How noble and inspiring they are! Our members everywhere, while exerting themselves in the “two ways of practice and study” (WND-1, pg 386), are deepening their vow as Bodhisattvas of the Earth and forging ahead on the path to worldwide kosen-rufu in the united spirit of “many in body, one in mind.” Nichiren Daishonin writes: “The wonderful means of truly putting an end to the physical and spiritual obstacles of all living beings is none other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.” (WND-1, pg 842) Precisely because our world is filled with “physical and spiritual obstacles,” let us base ourselves on the writings of Nichiren Daishonin and make even greater efforts to share the Mystic Law with courage and sincerity. “All phenomena that exist are manifestations of the Buddhist Law” (WND-2, pg 844), says the Daishonin. The Brilliant Path of Worldwide Kosen-rufu Learning from The New Human Revolution

SGI Vice-President Hiromasa Ikeda’s Commentary on Volume 14

My heart is burning with a strong resolve to wage a struggle of words. Now is the time to create a brilliant path for worldwide kosen-rufu.…Correctly recording the truth will serve as a clear mirror for the people of the future.

This was SGI President Ikeda’s motivation for writing The New Human Revolution, which he shared in an essay in August 2003 marking ten years since he started working on the novel. And 15 years later, in August 2018, he completed the 30-volume-series, providing us with a record of the brilliant advancement of kosen-rufu throughout the world. President Ikeda wrote the above essay while working on the “Mighty River” chapter of Volume 14, which was being published daily in the Seikyo Shimbun at that time. The Photo: Seikyo Press Photo: chapter begins with a description of the May 3, 1970, Soka Hiromasa Ikeda (2017) Gakkai Headquarters General Meeting commemorating the tenth anniversary of Shin’ichi Yamamoto’s inauguration as third president. That April marked 12 years since the passing of his mentor Josei Toda, and at the memorial service, Shin’ichi announces that the Soka Gakkai has now expanded to embrace a membership of 7.5 million households. “The flow of kosen-rufu has at last grown from a rushing stream into a mighty river,” he reports to his mentor, confident that they had reached a turning point in history, when “ripples of kosen-rufu were spreading far and wide and a

Sharing our history with the future Another key step taken by Shin’ichi during this tumultuous period is to exert himself in the fostering of capable people, with a particular focus on encouraging the future division. He is convinced that if a genuine commitment to truth and justice is lost, instead of an age of the flourishing of kosen-rufu we will be faced with a degenerate age. For this reason, he gives his all to nurturing younger members to become core leaders of their generation. This is a summary for each chapter in Volume 14, covering scenes that was originally published in the December 4, 2019 issue of the Seikyo Shimbun.
