  • "Comments on the Historicity of Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Tollan, and the Toltecs" by Michael E
31 COMMENTARY "Comments on the Historicity of Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Tollan, and the Toltecs" by Michael E. Smith University at Albany, State University of New York Can we believe Aztec historical accounts about Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Tollan, and other Toltec phenomena? The fascinating and important recent exchange in the Nahua Newsletter between H. B. Nicholson and Michel Graulich focused on this question. Stimulated partly by this debate and partly by a recent invitation to contribute an essay to an edited volume on Tula and Chichén Itzá (Smith n.d.), I have taken a new look at Aztec and Maya native historical traditions within the context of comparative oral histories from around the world. This exercise suggests that conquest-period native historical accounts are unlikely to preserve reliable information about events from the Early Postclassic period. Surviving accounts of the Toltecs, the Itzas (prior to Mayapan), Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Tula, and Chichén Itzá all belong more to the realm of myth than history. In the spirit of encouraging discussion and debate, I offer a summary here of my views on early Aztec native history; a more complete version of which, including discussion of the Maya Chilam Balam accounts, will be published in Smith (n.d.). I have long thought that Mesoamericanists have been far too credulous in their acceptance of native historical sources; this is an example of what historian David Fischer (1970:58-61) calls "the fallacy of misplaced literalism." Aztec native history was an oral genre that employed painted books as mnemonic devices to aid the historian or scribe in their recitation (Calnek 1978; Nicholson 1971).

The present article proposes that our modern Western concept of borders and political boundaries was foreign to ancient Mexican societies and to Aztec-era polities in general. Consequently, the article aims to add a novel angle to our understanding of the notions of space, territoriality, and limits in the indigenous worldview in central Mexico during preconquest times, and their repercussions for the internal social and political relations that evolved within the Nahua-Acolhua ethnic states (altepetl). Furthermore, taking its cue from the Corpus Xolotl, the article reconsiders the validity of ethnic entities and polities in ancient Mexico and claims that many of these polities were ethnic and territorial amalgams, in which components of ethnic outsiders formed internal enclaves and powerbases. I argue that in ancient Mexico one is able to observe yet another kind of conceptualization of borders/ frontiers: “enclosures with inclusion,” which served as the indigenous concept of porous and inclusive boundaries, well up to the era of the formation of the so-called Triple Alliance, and beyond.

Alongside this idea comes the widespread narrative that describes a barbaric, uncivilized group of indigenous people being conquered and subjugated by a more sophisticated and superior group of Europeans.

  • Chapter 24 After Settling in the Valley, the Aztecs Began to the Valley of Mexico, About 1500 Be Influenced by the Legacy of the Teotihuacans And
CHAPTER These drawings were created in Mexico around 1540 to show details of Aztec life. The Aztecs 24.1 Introduction In Chapter 23, you read about the Mayan civilization of southern Mexico and Central America. In this chapter, you will learn about the Aztecs, a Mesoamerican people who built a vast empire in central Mexico. The Aztec Empire flourished from 1428 to 1519 C.E., when it was destroyed by invaders from Spain. The Aztecs had a colorful legend about the beginnings of their empire. Originally a wandering group of hunter-gatherers, the Aztecs had a belief that one day they would receive a sign from the gods. They would see an eagle perched on a great cactus with "his wings stretched toward the rays of the sun." In its beak, the eagle would hold a long snake. When they saw this eagle, the Aztecs would know they had found the place where they would build a great city. In the mid 1200s C.E., the Aztecs entered the high Valley of Mexico, a fertile basin in central Mexico. Several times other groups in the valley pushed the Aztecs away from their lands. In 1325, the Aztecs took refuge on an island in Lake Texcoco. There Aztec priests saw the eagle, just as the gods had promised. And so the Aztecs set about building a city they called Tenochtitlan, which means "the place of the fruit of the prickly pear cactus." In time, the island city became the center of the Aztec Empire. In this chapter, you will learn more about where the Aztecs came from and how they built their magnificent capital city.

the 52-year calendar of the aztecs in the postclassic period 231 Chapter Four THE rITUAL PRACtICe oF tIMe oF THE 52-YEAR CaLeNDAR oF THE POStCLaSSIC aZTEC CIVILISATIoN It is from the Nahuatl-speaking Nahua culture called aztec, or Mexica1 as they called themselves; primary data of the ritual practice of time of the 52-year calendar are still in existence. I do not claim, however, that the Mesoamerican 52-year calendar or its associated ritual practices only ex- isted in aztec or Nahua society and culture. the term “aztec”2 derives from aztecatl,”person from aztlán”. aztlán— which can be paraphrased as “the white place” or “the place of the herons” in Nahuatl—was the designation for their place of origin. the aztecs con- stituted a part of the last Nahua faction whom invaded the Basin of Mexi- co after the decline of the toltecs (probably around 1100 AD) after leaving their place of origin (aztlán or Chicomoztoc).3 Not only their name but in addition their identity was hence transformed from chichimec4 when the aztecs founded the city tenochtitlan in 1325 AD (1 Calli according to their 52-year calendar), today known as Mexico City, on a few islands at the western part of the tetzcoco lake in the valley of Mexico. this became the capital of their transient realm in the northern and central part of Mexico from 1325 AD to 1521 AD (López austin 2001; Quiñones Keber 2002: 17). a triple alliance called excan tlatoloyan (“tribunal of three places”)—com- prising the cities tenochtitlan, tetzcoco and tlacopan—was established in 1428 AD by the regents Itzcoatl of tenochtitlan, Nezahualcóyotl of tetzco- co and totoquihuatzin of tlacopan.

The Aztec Empire: The Last Great Native Civilization in Mesoamerica By History.com, adapted by Newsela staff on 08.21.17 Word Count 505 Level 540L An Aztec dancer poses for a photo during a ceremony celebrating the birth of Cuauhtemoc, the last Aztec emperor, in Ixcateopan, Mexico, February 23, 2009. Cuauhtemoc was tortured and executed by Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes in 1525. AP Photo/Eduardo Verdugo The Aztecs lived in northern Mexico. They were a tribe that moved from place to place. Around A.D. 1200 they arrived in Mesoamerica. This was between central Mexico and northern Costa Rica. The Aztecs controlled many city-states in Mesoamerica. They built a powerful empire. Swamp becomes their home Many believe the Aztecs came from Aztlan. That means "White Land." They hunted and ate wild plants. The Aztecs were also known as the Mexica and also the Tenochca. In 1325, they built their first great city, called Tenochtitlán. It was named for them. When the Aztecs saw an eagle sitting on a cactus near a lake, they thought it was a sign to build their city there. First, they dried out the swampy land. Then they built the great city of Tenochtitlán there. Their farms grew crops of corn, beans, squash, potatoes, tomatoes and avocados. They also fished and hunted. They put together a large army and grew strong. This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com. Aztec empire had almost 6 million people In 1428, the Aztec leader was Itzcoatl. His army joined with armies from the Texcocans and Tacubans tribes.

These historical doeuments extend far back into the past and delve deeply into the traditions, eustoms and religions of the Nahua people. It was the great leader Itzcoatl who was the fourth ruler and aetually the first great Aztee eonqueror to whom we are indebted for many of the surviving pieees of data. His pur pose, however, was not one whieh historians would approve. In the earliest known doeuments the Aztees were assigned a rather seeondary role. Under the rule of Itzcoatl, however, the entire aceumulation of historieal manuseripts were burned, "for it con taineth many falsehoods" (Anderson and Dibble, 1954, p. 191). Itzcoatl was a great statesman as well as a warrior of renown. At the beginning of his reing he had Aztee history rewritten to eonform with the multiple viewpoints of religious imperialism and nationalism which he favored.

  • The Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Cult of Sacred War at Teotihuacan
CHAPTER 7 TheTempleofQuetzalcoatlandthe Cultof Sacred Warat Teotihuacan The Temple of Quetzalcoatl at Teotihuacan has been the source of startling archaeological discoveries since the early portion of this century. Beginning in 1918, excavations by Manuel Gamio revealed an elaborate and beautifully preserved facade underlying later construc- tion. Although excavations were performed intermittently during the subsequent decades, some of the most important discoveries have occurred during the last several years. Recent investigations have revealed mass dedicatory burials in the foundations of the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (Sugiyama 1989a; Cabrera Castro et al. 1988); at the time of this writing, more than eighty individuals have been discovered interred in the foundations of the pyramid. Sugiyama (1989a) persuasively argues that many of the individuals appear to be either war- riors or dressed in the office of war. The archaeological investigations by Cabrera, Sugiyama, and Cowgill are ongoing, and to comment extensively on the implications of their work would be both premature and presumptuous. Nonetheless, the recent excavations have placed an entirely new light on the significance of the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and its remarkable sculptural format. In this study, I will be concerned with the iconographic meaning of the Temple of Quetzalcoatl facade. In recent work, I noted that the temple facade represents serpents passing through a facade of circular mirrors (Taube 1986, 1988e). Two forms of serpents are present, Quetzalcoatl and an ancestral form of the Xiuhcoatl. In this respect, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl facade may be compared to the Postclassic wind temple of Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl, which also appears To cite this chapter: with mirrors and serpents (Taube 1986).

The two are completely standalone, linked only by the theme of gods interfering in human affairs. I've seen a lot of people claiming that Lovegrove's Pantheon series is inventing a new form of sci-fi aka "godpunk" - which is as lazy a way a describing a literary form as tacking "-gate" onto every political scandal. It's not new - it's very much following in the footsteps of Roger Zelazny and the sort of thing he was doing with Lord of Light , but updated to reflect modern pacing and style. That's not to take anything away from it - the SF world sorely needs someone who can handle this genre with such mastery, who has an appreciation for the expanse of world mythology, and who can tell a damn fine story.

1 THE MEXICA EMPIRE: MEMORY, IDENTITY, AND COLLECTIONISM “Typically, ancient civilizations turned their back on the future, but they saw the past spread in front of them as the sole reality, always as an ideal to emulate.” Paul-Alain Beaulieu* This chapter covers the four topics requested to unify the comparative analysis and the future publication. The concept that guides this text has been explained by Jacques Le Goff y Paul Ricoeur1 summarized in the words of Alain Schnapp: “The foundation of memory is repetition: the capacity to reactivate a fading memory or rediscover a monument that erosion has disguised or nature overgrown.”2 That is to say; it has been considered the monumental development formation of oral, visual, and written Mesoamerican memory that extends since 1500 (BCE) to 1521 (CE). The political organization of the State was the motor driving the continuous process of acculturation. The kingdom or Mexica Empire, known as the Triple Alianza, are institutions of Toltec origin, enriched and transformed by the experiences of the kingdoms of Cholula, Xochicalco, Tula, Colhuacan, and Texcoco (900-1500 CE). In the transition from Teotihuacan (200-650 CE) to Tula (900-1200 CE), the Mexica State witnessed a reduction of the hegemonic power of the tlatoani (the king).
