Although yeast species typically occupy defined areas on the biome scale, their distribution patterns within a single type of vegetation, such as forests, are more complex. In order to understand factors that shape soil yeast communities, soils collected underneath decaying wood logs and under forest litter were analyzed. We isolated and identified molecularly a total of 25 yeast species, including three new species. Occurrence and distribution of yeasts isolated from these soils provide new insights into ecology and niche specialization of several soil- borne species. Although abundance of typical soil yeast species varied among experimental plots, the analysis of species abundance and community composition revealed a strong influence of wood log deposition and leakage of organic carbon.

The rRNA gene sequence analyses indicated that the two strains represented a novel species of the genus Cryptococcus, for which the name Cryptococcus fildesensis sp. nov. is proposed (type strain: CPCC 300017T5DSM 26442T5CBS 12705T). The MycoBank number of the novel species is MB 805542. Phylogeny based on the 26S (D1/D2-domain), ITS1- 5.8S-ITS2 and complete 18S rDNA demonstrated that C. ramirezgomezianus is closely related to several additional Cryptococcus species (C. humicola, C. longus, C. musci, C. pseudolongus) within the Trichosporonales. A new genus, Asterotremella, and a new family, Asterotremellaceae were introduced for Cryptococcus species clustering within the Trichosporonales having a ubiquinone Q-9. These fungi have been conventionally classified as basidiomycetous yeasts based on physiological and biochemical characteristics. Many currently recognised genera of these yeasts are mainly defined based on phenotypical characters and are highly polyphyletic. Here we reconstructed the phylogeny of the majority of described anamorphic and teleomorphic tremellomycetous yeasts using Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, and neighbour-joining analyses based on the sequences of seven genes, including three rRNA genes, namely the small subunit of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA), D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rDNA, and the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS 1 and 2) of rDNA including 5.8S rDNA; and four protein-coding genes, namely the two subunits of the RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2), the translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1) and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b (CYTB).
