RSA JOU R N A L 25/2014 GIULIANA MUS C IO A Transcultural Perspective on the Casting of The Rose Tattoo A transcultural perspective on the film The Rose Tattoo (Daniel Mann, 1955), written by Tennessee Williams, is motivated by its setting in an Italian-American community (specifically Sicilian) in Louisiana, and by its cast, which includes relevant Italian participation. A re-examination of its production and textuality illuminates not only Williams’ work but also the cultural interactions between Italy and the U.S. On the background, the popularity and critical appreciation of neorealist cinema.1 The production of the film The Rose Tattoo has a complicated history, which is worth recalling, in order to capture its peculiar transcultural implications in Williams’ own work, moving from some biographical elements. In the late 1940s Tennessee Williams was often traveling in Italy, and visited Sicily, invited by Luchino Visconti (who had directed The Glass Managerie in Rome, in 1946) for the shooting of La terra trema (1948), where he went with his partner Frank Merlo, an occasional actor of Sicilian origins (Williams, Notebooks 472). Thus his Italian experiences involved both his professional life, putting him in touch with the lively world of Italian postwar theater and film, and his affections, with new encounters and new friends. In the early 1950s Williams wrote The Rose Tattoo as a play for Anna Magnani, protagonist of the neorealist masterpiece Rome Open City (Roberto Rossellini, 1945). However, the Italian actress was not yet comfortable with acting in English and therefore the American stage version (1951) starred Maureen Stapleton instead and Method actor Eli Wallach. -

OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We can’t imagine a more perfect show to give our 2016–2017 Season a great launch (if you’ll pardon the pun). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid. The Rise of Controversial Content in Film
The Climb of Controversial Film Content by Ashley Haygood Submitted to the Department of Communication Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Communication at Liberty University May 2007 Film Content ii Abstract This study looks at the change in controversial content in films during the 20th century. Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The advent of television, post-war effects and a proposed “Hollywood elite” are discussed as possible causes for the increase in controversial content. Commentary from industry professionals on the change in content is presented, along with an overview of American culture and the history of the film industry. St. Louis Arts Ecology Report
Saint Louis Arts Ecology February 8, 2019 PRESENTATION AT THE REGIONAL ARTS COMMISSION ARTS &: NEXT STEPS CONVENING FEBRUARY 8, 2019 Summary The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland was commissioned by Centene Corporation to study the arts ecology of St. Louis. The goal of the study was to provide guidance to Centene about the needs of the artists and arts organizations in St. Louis. The study examined two cohorts of arts organizations, those larger organizations that receive RAC funding and smaller organizations that receive project support. In-depth interviews and data surveys were performed with 60 organizations from both cohorts. Data for arts organizations in St. Louis were also compared to data from arts organizations in six comparator cities. The interviews focused on key strategic aspects of arts management: artistic planning, marketing (both to increase ticket sales and to engage new donors), fund-raising, board engagement and staffing. 2 Major Conclusions Major conclusions of the study included: - St. Louis has a remarkably large, diverse and productive arts sector that includes a large number of organizations - The largest arts organizations are larger than their counterparts in similar size cities - St. Louis is missing a cadre of mid-sized organizations; most organizations are very large or of modest size - There is a great reliance on fundraising by the larger arts institutions 3 Major Conclusions (cont) - A small group of very generous funders is providing a large portion of philanthropy in St. -
