Having flirted with foreign coaches such as Sven-Goran Eriksson and then autocratic Italian Fabio Capello before bringing in the vastly-experi- enced Hodgson, the Football Association (FA) are like- ly to go for an Englishman if the bookies are to be believed. But none of the small list of leading English con- tenders have won a major trophy, something which does not augur well for their hopes of rebuilding the morale of a side beaten 2-1 in such abject fashion by Iceland on Monday. Southgate-perhaps best known for missing a spot-kick in the Euro 96 semi-final penal- ty shoot-out defeat against Germany at Wembley- restored some of his reputation with victory at the prestigious Toulon tournament in May having had a disappointing European Under-21 campaign last year. The 45-year-old-who has been in charge of the England Under-21 side since 2013 — has managed just one club, Middlesbrough. He kept them in the Premier League for two seasons before they were rel- egated in the 2008/09 campaign. The runner-up in 1974, by the way, brought Atletico a curious position of the first intercontinental cup club, not winning the most important continental interclub trophy: the team defeated the Argentines from Independiente, not winning the UEFA Champions Cup, lost to Bayern Munich. The German club gave the Spanish place. Atletico will again be a Champions League finalist in 2014 and 2016 without winning it. The Canadian independent media and investment research company Corporate Knights put the Belgian business at the top of their latest Global 100 ranking, nabbing the gold from Brazilian cosmetics company Natura and the Norwegian oil company Statoil. Umicore specialises in recycling technology and manufactures catalysts for cars which reduce pollution. It also recycles materials like gold, copper, nickel and rare metals such as palladium from used car batteries and printing plates. Ecological efficiency is high on the agenda of the company, which plans on-site wind turbines and aims to reduce its level of CO2 emissions by 20% in 2015 compared to 2006. The fact that the corporation has a one-to-five ratio of female representatives on their board of directors and a CEO (Marc Grynberg) who earns ‘only’ 34 times as much as the average employee, ensured Umicore’s exceptional score as far as the social component of the index is concerned. In 1989, Umicore was set up after the merger of mining giant Union Minière and the lead- processing plant Metallurgie. The company became one of the most spectacular and successful industrial reconversions in Belgium and has gradually managed to position itself as a global player among major recycling businesses.

  • Atlético Extend Lead, Real Draw at Elche Sociedad Beat Bilbao in Basque Derby to End Winless Run
ARAB TIMES, FRIDAY-SATURDAY, JANUARY 1-2, 2021 SPORTS 14 Atlético extend lead, Real draw at Elche Sociedad beat Bilbao in Basque derby to end winless run BARCELONA, Spain, Dec 31, (AP): Luis Suárez led Atlético Madrid to a 1-0 victory over Getafe in the 500th game for coach Diego Simeone, extending its Spanish league lead after Real Madrid drew 1-1 at Elche. The Uruguay striker used a pow- erful and precise header to send Yannick Carrasco’s lob from a free kick into the lower corner of Getafe’s net in the 20th minute. It was Suárez’s eighth goal in the league this season since leaving Barcelona for one of their top rivals. Atlético put on the defensive clamps for the rest of the game to earn a 10th consecutive league win over Getafe. Atlético’s third win in a row left them two points above Madrid, which saw their five-game league winning streak end at Elche. Atlético also have two games in hand on Madrid. SOCCER Simeone has transformed Atlético into one of the top teams in Europe since the former player returned to the club to become their coach nine years ago. He has guided them to two Europa League titles, one Spanish league, one Copa del Rey, along with two Champions League final appearances. The win over Getafe was No. 301 for the Argentine. Atlético midfielder Jorge “Koke” has been with Simeone from the start. Madrid looked ready to romp early in the match at promoted Elche. Marcelo had already hit the crossbar before Luka Modric put the defending champions ahead in the 20th.

In this paper, we assess empirically the connection between genetic diversity and the performance of sport teams. Focusing on football (soccer), we built a novel dataset of national teams of European countries that have participated in the European and the World Championships since 1970. Determining the genetic diversity of national teams is based on the distance between the genetic scores of every players’ origins in the team. Genetic endowments for each player are recovered using a matching algorithm based on family names. Performance is measured at both the unilateral and bilateral level. Identification of the causal link relies on an instrumental variable strategy that is based on past immigration at the country level about one generation before.
