His best period came between 1939 and 1975, winning seven of the ten titles in the Spanish league, the 1962 European Cup and finishing second in the UEFA Champions League in 1974. The runner-up in 1974, by the way, brought Atletico a curious position of the first intercontinental cup club, not winning the most important continental interclub trophy: the team defeated the Argentines from Independiente, not winning the UEFA Champions Cup, lost to Bayern Munich. The German club gave the Spanish place. Atletico will again be a Champions League finalist in 2014 and 2016 without winning it. Established 1961 27 Sports Thursday, June 21, 2018 SNIPPETS Ronaldo earns edgy Portugal 1-0 win as Morocco’s hopes end Cristiano is tournament leading scorer on four MOSCOW: Cristiano Ronaldo powered-home a fourth-minute header to give Portugal a 1-0 World Cup victory over Morocco that took them top of Group B yesterday and meant the unlucky North African side become the first to be eliminated from the tournament. Ronaldo’s fourth goal of Russia 2018, following his hat-trick in the 3-3 draw with Spain, took the European champions to four points. Iran have three points and Spain one ahead of their meeting later yesterday. Morocco, who had a real go at the Luzhniki Stadium but failed to convert their chances, are pointless having also lost 1-0 to Iran and cannot progress to the second round. Portugal struggled to impose themselves and ended up defending for long spells, leaving coach Fernando Santos unim- pressed. “We have to look at this, we lost control of the game,” he said. “We misplaced a lot of passes, we lost confi- dence... it was inexplicable. If in a match against players like they have, if you don’t have the ball, they wear you down and you get into trouble.” Despite their battling display, Morocco will rue the unforgivable defending that made all their sub- sequent good work irrelevant. They qualified for MOSCOW: Portugal’s forward Cristiano Ronaldo (C) challenges Morocco’s defender Mehdi Benatia and the finals without conceding a goal in six matches Morocco’s midfielder Mehdi Carcela (R) during the Russia 2018 World Cup Group B football match yet somehow opted against marking the most dan- between Portugal and Morocco at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow yesterday.

Application of the Golden Index formula in Club Atlético de Madrid 2016/2017 Tiago Pereira1 , João Ribeiro1,2 , Filipe Grilo3 , Daniel Barreira1,2 1Universidade do Porto, Faculty of Sport, Porto, Portugal; 2Universidade do Porto, Centre of Research, Training, Innovation and Intervention in Sport, CIFI2D, Porto, Portugal; 3Universidade do Porto, Faculty of Economy, Porto, Portugal Abstract –– Aim: In this study, we sought to analyze the influence of the quality of opposition on players’ performance of Club Atlético de Madrid (ATM) 2016/2017. For that, the Golden Index (GI) formula was applied to identify and rank the Golden Players of ATM when playing against opponents of different quality levels. Methods: GI formula variables were collected through notational analysis and three global adjacency matrices were constructed to record all successful ball-passing actions performed. Next, the matrices were imported to SocNetV to collect the network centrality metrics. To uniformize each variable, the statistical standardization technique was applied to all variables. ATM opponents were classified into three groups: high-level (n=4), medium-level (n=2) and low-level (n=2), according to their classification in La Liga and participation in the final stage of UEFA Champions League 2016/2017. Results: Koke was considered the Golden Player playing against high-level teams, while opposing low-level opponents he was ranked as second. Against medium- and low-level teams, Antoine Griezmann was considered the Golden Player, but was not classified in the three first positions against high-level opponents.
