The runner-up in 1974, by the way, brought Atletico a curious position of the first intercontinental cup club, not winning the most important continental interclub trophy: the team defeated the Argentines from Independiente, not winning the UEFA Champions Cup, lost to Bayern Munich. The German club gave the Spanish place. Atletico will again be a Champions League finalist in 2014 and 2016 without winning it. ARAB TIMES, FRIDAY-SATURDAY, JANUARY 1-2, 2021 SPORTS 14 Atlético extend lead, Real draw at Elche Sociedad beat Bilbao in Basque derby to end winless run BARCELONA, Spain, Dec 31, (AP): Luis Suárez led Atlético Madrid to a 1-0 victory over Getafe in the 500th game for coach Diego Simeone, extending its Spanish league lead after Real Madrid drew 1-1 at Elche. The Uruguay striker used a pow- erful and precise header to send Yannick Carrasco’s lob from a free kick into the lower corner of Getafe’s net in the 20th minute. It was Suárez’s eighth goal in the league this season since leaving Barcelona for one of their top rivals. Atlético put on the defensive clamps for the rest of the game to earn a 10th consecutive league win over Getafe. Atlético’s third win in a row left them two points above Madrid, which saw their five-game league winning streak end at Elche. Atlético also have two games in hand on Madrid. SOCCER Simeone has transformed Atlético into one of the top teams in Europe since the former player returned to the club to become their coach nine years ago. He has guided them to two Europa League titles, one Spanish league, one Copa del Rey, along with two Champions League final appearances. The win over Getafe was No. 301 for the Argentine. Atlético midfielder Jorge “Koke” has been with Simeone from the start. Madrid looked ready to romp early in the match at promoted Elche. Previous meetings • The teams were paired together in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League group stage, Dortmund's Christian Pulišić scoring the only goal of those two games in the 85th minute in Belgium on Matchday 1. • Prior to that season, the teams had each won two of their four matches, all at home – but Club Brugge emerged victorious in both ties, both in dramatic circumstances. • In the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, each side won the home leg 2-1, sending the tie into a penalty shoot-out in Dortmund which was won 4-2 by the vistors.

In this paper, we assess empirically the connection between genetic diversity and the performance of sport teams. Focusing on football (soccer), we built a novel dataset of national teams of European countries that have participated in the European and the World Championships since 1970. Determining the genetic diversity of national teams is based on the distance between the genetic scores of every players’ origins in the team. Genetic endowments for each player are recovered using a matching algorithm based on family names. Performance is measured at both the unilateral and bilateral level. Identification of the causal link relies on an instrumental variable strategy that is based on past immigration at the country level about one generation before.
