HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 76

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

To commend former upon being elected to

the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

WHEREAS, born on March 20, 1958, Rickey Jackson played football and basketball at Pahokee High School in Pahokee, Florida, and went on to play football at the college level at the ; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was selected by the New Orleans Saints as a linebacker in the second round of the 1981 Draft; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson made an immediate impact as a rookie with the New

Orleans Saints as a leading tackler, and he led his team with a franchise rookie record of eight sacks in a single season; and

WHEREAS, during the 1983 season, Mr. Jackson established himself as an elite pass rusher in the National Football League, as he recorded twelve sacks that year and earned his first NFL appearance; and

WHEREAS, the 1983 season also marked the first of six double-digit sack totals recorded by Mr. Jackson throughout his illustrious professional football career; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was named to the NFL Pro Bowl six times throughout his career, and he was named first-team All-Pro in 1986, 1987, 1992, and 1993; and

WHEREAS, from 1981 to 1993, Mr. Jackson was instrumental to the success of the

New Orleans Saints, and he helped the team register its first winning season and its first playoff appearance in franchise history in 1987 and its first division title in 1991; and

WHEREAS, the New Orleans Saints never finished below the .500 mark during Mr.

Jackson's final seven years with the team; and

WHEREAS, after thirteen highly productive years with the New Orleans Saints, Mr.

Jackson finished his NFL career with two final seasons with the , where he was converted to a defensive end and a pass rush specialist, and

WHEREAS, during his first season with his new team, Mr. Jackson enjoyed a championship run, which ended with a San Francisco 49er victory over the San Diego

Chargers in XXIX; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson played in two hundred twenty-seven games throughout his

NFL career, missing only two games during the 1981 season after being injured in an automobile accident; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson retired after the 1995 season with one hundred twenty-eight sacks, eight , twenty-eight recoveries, and forty-one forced ; and

WHEREAS, at the time of his retirement, Mr. Jackson was the third all-time leading quarterback sacker in National Football League history, and he still ranks third in NFL history in fumble recoveries and fourth in forced fumbles; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson is being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame during the 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival in Canton, Ohio, from July 30,

2010, through August 8, 2010; and

WHEREAS, with his election and upcoming induction to the Pro Football Hall of

Fame, Mr. Jackson makes history as the first New Orleans Saints player to ever receive this honor, and he joins San Francisco 49ers wide receiver , running back , Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle , Washington Redskins guard , Denver Broncos running back , and defensive back Dick LeBeau as a member of the 2010 class of inductees to the Pro Football Hall of

Fame; and

WHEREAS, Rickey Jackson merits a sincere measure of commendation for his outstanding achievements and singular contributions as a Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker with the New Orleans Saints.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend former New Orleans Saints linebacker Rickey Jackson upon being elected to the

Pro Football Hall of Fame, does hereby recognize and record for posterity his exceptional career in the National Football League, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Rickey Jackson.
