Wolf-Ekkehard Lönnig Zum vorliegenden Buch: Evolutionstheoretische Erklärungsversuche werden durch grundsätzlich-kritische Anfragen und mit viel biologischem Detailwissen Die Evolution der auf die Probe gestellt. Rhetorische Stilmittel und überzogene Behauptungen von deren Befürwortern werden minutiös aufgezeigt. Dabei wird eine Bandbreite an mehr oder weniger vertrauten, aktuellen aber auch geradezu klassischen Autoren zitiert und diskutiert, die gewaltig ist. Auch philosophische und theologische Fragen werden nicht ausgelassen. Das Resultat ist schwer lesbar doch äußerst reichhaltig für alle die sich mit der Frage zur Herkunft komplex organisierter organismischer Systeme befassen. karnivoren Pflanzen: Markus Rammerstorfer, Autor von Nur eine Illusion? Biologie und Design (2006) sowie Lebewesen und Design (2010). Vom Blickwinkel eines kritischen Biologen abseits des neodarwinschen main-streams gibt Dr. W.-E. Lönnig mit dieser Abhandlung über bemerkenswerte Vertreter der Lentibulariaceae nicht nur einen Anstoß zum Nachdenken sondern auch zu weiterer Forschungsarbeit. Mag. Dr. Dietmar Jäger, Botaniker. In every family of the plant and animal kingdoms there are species whose sudden appearances and whose irreducibly complex features pose problems for neo-Darwinism. But certain carnivorous plants pose these problems in such a spectacular way that they are a focal point of the Darwinism debate, ever since Alfred Wallace warned Darwin about the problems posed by Utricularia, saying "I feel sure they will be seized on as inexplicable by Natural Selection" and implored him to address these difficulties in a future edition of his book "On the Origin of Species." Darwin never did, but some more recent authors have proposed various contradictory gradualistic and saltationist explanations for this spectacular example of irreducible complexity. W.-E. Lönnig answers these authors with great luxury of detail, and shows that "after more than 135 years of further research, Darwinism today can no more satisfactorily answer these questions than Darwin could. And the difficulties have increased." Dipl. Ing. Kai-Uwe Kohlrep, Autor des Buches Schöpfung oder Evolution. Lönnig geht akribisch allen Eigenarten und Leistungen der Saugfalle von Utricularia nach, die nach dem Deutungsmodell Evolution allein durch Selektion und Mutation, also naturalistisch, entstanden sein sollen. Nicht Lönnigs Deutung, sondern die präzisen Kenntnisse der biologischen Tatsachen überzeugen von der Intelligibilität dieser Phänomene und bringt deren behauptete naturalistische Verursachung nicht nur in Schwierigkeiten, sondern hebelt sie aus. Dr. Werner Gieffers, Biologe, Senior Scientist und Gruppenleiter am Max-Planck-Institut für Züchtungsforschung von 1991 bis 2004 (retired), Wissenschaftler dort ab 1984. Als Botaniker möchte ich das vorliegende Buch für jeden, der an den Fragen zum Ursprung und zur Evolution der Organismen ernsthaft interessiert ist, zum gründlichen Studium empfehlen. Es zeigt deutlich, dass die heutigen Evolutionstheorien der Komplexität lebenden Strukturen nicht angemessen sind und dass sowohl spezifische als auch nichtreduzierbare Komplexität auf einen intelligenten Ursprung hinweisen. Dr. Henning Kahle, Botaniker und Lehrer, Autor des Buches Evolution Irrweg moderner Naturwissenschaft? Der Autor zeigt, warum sich eine fleischfressende Pflanze als Stresstest für den Darwinismus geradezu aufdrängt. Konfrontiert mit den Stresstest-Ergebnissen, kommt es bei denjenigen, die die Synthetische Evolutionstheorie für alternativlos halten, mitunter zu recht interessanten Erklärungsversuchen. Dass dabei längst nicht immer fachlich kompetent und sachlich argumentiert wird, zeigt die Selektion nicht leisten kann Was Pflanzen: karnivoren dieses Buch an sehr vielen konkreten Beispielen. Ob einer Gesellschaft, die sich weltanschaulich weitgehend von der Grundidee der Synthetischen Evolutionstheorie abhängig gemacht hat, der Ausstieg aus diesem Denkschema gelingen wird, dafür liefert dieses Buch zwar viele Gründe aber nur wenig Hoffnung: Offenbar teilt längst nicht jeder den Wunsch des Autors nach erneuerbaren Wissenschaften. Lönnig nutzt die Gelegenheit und legt eine großartige Arbeit vor, die zwingend nahelegt: nicht durch Evolution sondern durch Intelligent Design ist der karnivore Wasserschlauch entstanden. Beschreibung des Gesetzes der rekurrenten Variation hat der Autor unweigerlich die Auszeichnung durch einen Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin verdient. In dieser Publikation brilliert Lönnig erneut durch seine Argumentation und Fragestellung. Seine materialistischen Widersacher haben es in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten nicht vermocht, eine brauchbare Theorie aufzustellen, wie sich die hochkomplexe synorganisierte Saugfalle von Utricularia entwickelt haben soll. Da sowohl Pinguicula als auch Genlisea als Ausgangspunkt entfallen, können die Evolutionsvertreter auch nicht die Frage beantworten, was zuerst dagewesen sein soll, der Fangapparat oder der Verdauungsmechanismus oder ... Die Grundlinien der Diskussion sind auch für den Nichtfachmann so klar, dass man das Buch jedem empfehlen kann, der an der Evolutionsfrage interessiert ist.     Technical Refereed Contribution Phylogeny and biogeography of the Sarraceniaceae JOHN BRITTNACHER • Ashland, Oregon • USA • [email protected] Keywords: History: Sarraceniaceae evolution The carnivorous plant family Sarraceniaceae in the order Ericales consists of three genera: Dar- lingtonia, Heliamphora, and Sarracenia. Darlingtonia is represented by one species that is found in northern California and western Oregon. The genus Heliamphora currently has 23 recognized species all of which are native to the Guiana Highlands primarily in Venezuela with some spillover across the borders into Brazil and Guyana. Sarracenia has 15 species and subspecies, all but one of which are located in the southeastern USA. The range of Sarracenia purpurea extends into the northern USA and Canada. Closely related families in the plant order Ericales include the Roridu- laceae consisting of two sticky-leaved carnivorous plant species, Actinidiaceae, the Chinese goose- berry family, Cyrillaceae, which includes the common wetland plant Cyrilla racemiflora, and the family Clethraceae, which also has wetland plants including Clethra alnifolia. The rather charismatic plants of the Sarraceniaceae have drawn attention since the mid 19th century from botanists trying to understand how they came into being, how the genera are related to each other, and how they came to have such disjunct distributions. Before the advent of DNA sequencing it was very difficult to determine their relationships. Macfarlane (1889, 1893) proposed a phylogeny of the Sarraceniaceae based on his judgment of the overlap in features of the adult pitchers and his assumption that Nepenthes is a member of the family (Fig. 1a). He based his phy- logeny on the idea that the pitchers are produced from the fusion of two to five leaflets.

Abstract This part is the first in a series that will describe the biological survey of the Eastern Goldfields District of Western Australia. It deals specifically with the background, aims and objectives of the survey and outlines the methods used to document vegetation, soils, flora and verteprate fauna at numerous sample sites representative of this heterogeneous region. The Eastern Goldfields District (266,000 km') was selected for survey for the following reasons because: there had been no previous detailed survey of the biota of the District, which is a region of considerable interest in that it lies between the mesic South West and arid Eremaean regions; extensive areas of vegetation have remained relatively unmodified since European settlement; the need to evaluate the adequacy of existing conservation reserve systems; pressure to release more land for clearing for cereal crops in south-western and southern parts of the district.
