Am Ende des Tages half Chloe Michelle und Tony Almeida den Tod von Jack vorzutäuschen und hielt im Laufe der Jahre auch Kontakt zu ihm (Season 5 Prequel). Außerdem ging sie eine kurze Affäre mit dem CTU Agenten Spencer Wolff ein. Als auf David Palmer, Tony Almeida und Michelle Dessler Mordanschläge verübt werden, befindet sich auch Chloe in Lebensgefahr. However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present.

Naquele momento, a emissora Rede Globo de Televisão acabara de transmitir mais um episódio da quinta temporada do seriado estadunidense 24 – ou 24 Horas, como é chamado no Brasil. No episódio em questão, um personagem coadjuvante foi vítima de uma ação terrorista e faleceu. No minuto seguinte ao término da exibição do episódio, no site de relacionamentos Orkut, fãs comentaram o trágico destino do personagem praticamente em tempo real. Foram cerca de 100 mensagens em apenas 20 minutos. As reações eram diversas, mas de um modo geral, as mensagens lidas na comunidade “24 Horas (Globo)” demonstraram grande pesar pelo personagem, fragmento de uma história que lhes parecia “real” naquele limiar subjetivo entre a ficção e a realidade.

BENNETT Abstract The right of publicity is a relatively marginalized yet increasingly radical form of intellectual property. Typically, celebrities use it to prevent freeloaders from profiting on their fame by making unauthorized use of their image, likeness or signature to make goods or services more attractive to consumers. The right of publicity allows famous individuals to stop this type of behavior by providing a property right in identity or persona. Brandished by celebrities who are also political figures, though, the doctrine can become a powerful means of chilling political speech, and therefore a direct threat to First Amendment free speech rights. The descriptive goal of this article is to explain how publicity rights can cause problems in the context of political figures that also have celebrity status.
