Randy Weston was not the first musician to do so, however he was chosen for this thesis because his experiences, influences, and music clearly demonstrate the importance traditional African culture has played in his life. Randy Weston was born during the Harlem Renaissance. His parents, who lived in Brooklyn at that time, were influenced by the political views that predominated African American culture. Weston’s father, in particular, felt a strong connection to his African heritage and instilled the concept of pan-Africanism and the writings of Marcus Garvey firmly into Randy Weston’s consciousness. -

Crumble. This is not your destruction. This is your birth. ~ Noor Tagouri The beautiful words really struck a chord with me. Pieces of my life, certain weeks, even years have felt to me like the mythological phoenix melting to nothing then somehow rising from the ash. Or the prosaic butterfly - the awkward caterpillar climbing deeply into a cocoon, thinking this was her final resting place and then somehow a magical butterfly emerges. All too often we run from life, we hide from the messy moments, we dampen the pain only to realize maybe those acute moments of chaos ARE LIFE. It’s a cycle…What would things look like if it all stayed the same? Perhaps we have to disintegrate in order to let go of the things that dim our light. Those moments when we emerge again as the glorious phoenix or the gorgeous butterfly are the result of the meltdown, the hibernation, the healing of raw emotions and our ability to embrace the shifting tides of our life cycles. -

RELIGIOUS & CULTURAL Dongzhi Festival OBSERVATIONS In support of our patients, their families and our employees, faculty members and students, this information is offered as a resource about the Dongzhi Festival, also known as the Winter Solstice Festival. History and Meaning: The Dongzhi Festival celebrates the turning point of winter. It is common for families to gather and enjoy a hearty, warming meal. This is a harmonious balance of yin and yang energy; the dark cold night and the impending sunlight and warmth of delicious food. The festival started during the Han dynasty (202 B.C.-220 A.D.). The day was devoted to worshipping heaven and praying at the tombs of ancestors. Relevant Observances: • Observers enjoy tang yuan, sweet round rice balls typically filled with sesame or red bean paste and served in ginger broth. Other traditional foods enjoyed during the celebration are dumplings, won ton and mutton. • It is important to share a lavish meal with family on this day. Tips for Supporting Patients: • Special foods and drinks may be requested and should be allowed if medically appropriate. • Patients may want to have visitors during the evening hours. Tips for Supporting Staff and Faculty Members and Students: • Employees, faculty members and students may request this time off. This should be allowed. An Investigation of the Life, Influences, and Music of Randy Weston by Jason Squinobal, Ph.D. [email protected] Assistant Professor of Music; Director of Instrumental Music, Virginia Wesleyan University, Virginia Beach, Virginia Introduction In an article written in 1973 for the journal, Black Perspectives in Music, J.H. Kwanbena Nketia highlights the important and continual relationship between African and African American music. Nketia states “The relationship between African and Afro-American music is dynamic and unbroken at the conceptual level in spite of the differences in materials to which these concepts are applied.”1 This statement articulates the importance of African music in the creation of African American music, at its inception, and continued development of African American music in modern times. This relationship has not always been recognized in past music scholarship. Nketia says, “The importance of the music of Africa in historical studies of Afro-American music has tended to be seen more as providing a point of departure than as something that continues to be relevant to the present.”2 There are studies that give African music credit for the continual influence it has had on African American music; however, Nketia’s words are as relevant today as they were in 1973. It is my intention to present a study that is sensitive to the claims made by Nketia. The work presented here identifies the continued application of traditional African musical and cultural traits in jazz composition and performance. Many jazz musicians utilized traditional African traits in their music. Randy Weston was not the first musician to do so, however jazz fans and scholars will remember him because his experiences, influences, and music clearly demonstrate the importance traditional African culture played in his life. -

That question is asked by millions about this time of year. Why? Is there any religious significance to February 14? Where did St. Valentine's Day come from? You might suppose schoolteachers and educators would know. But do they? How many of you were ever taught the real origin of Valentine's Day — were ever told in school exactly why you should observe the custom of exchanging valentines? Teachers are all too often silent about the origin of the customs they are forced to teach in today's schools. If they were to speak out, many would lose their jobs! Today, candy makers unload tons of heart-shaped red boxes for February 14 — St. Valentine's Day — while millions of the younger set exchange valentines. Florists consider February 14 as one of their best business days. And young lovers pair off – at least for a dance or two — at St. Valentine's balls. Why? Where did these customs originate? How did we come to inherit these customs? Isn't it time we examined why we encourage our children to celebrate St. Valentine's Day? A Christian custom? Many have assumed that the traditional Valentine's Day celebrations are all in connection with an early Christian martyr by the name of Valentine. Nothing could be further from the truth! Main St. Azle, Texas 76020 Phone-817-444-7216 www.azlelibrary.org While many of us are familiar with Christmas, there are various other holidays and traditions celebrated throughout the world during this season. 1. Hanukkah (celebrated in December or late November) is an eight-day Jewish celebration of the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Revolt. For each night of the celebration a candle is added to the Menorah (after sundown) and lit by a ninth candle called a shamash (“helper”). 2. Kwanzaa (December 26 to January 1) honors African heritage in African-American culture and celebrates the seven core principles of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. 3. Eid Al Adha (10th day of the 12th month on the lunar calendar) is a Muslim holiday which celebrates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son to God. New clothes are worn to perform the Eid prayer, and families, who are able, purchase a halal animal which is divided into three parts - one for family, one for friends, and one for the needy. 4. The Dongzhi Festival (December 21 or 22) is a winter solstice festival celebrated by the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. The day is spent with family and warm, hearty foods (such as dumplings) are eaten. 5. Yalda or Shab-e-chelleh (celebrated on the longest and darkest night of the year) is an Iranian solstice festival. On this night, families get together and stay awake all night long, reading classic poetry and old mythologies aloud. -

Munro Sickafoose December 20, 2020 Most Americans of my generation had a religious upbringing, especially if you came from a small town like my parents did. You were raised Methodist, or Presbyterian, or Lutheran, or Baptist or some other denomination – and one of the first questions you might get asked when you met new people was, “What church do you go to?” I, on the other hand, was raised up as what I only half-jokingly call Generic Protestant. My father was an Army officer, and I was – still am – an Army brat. Military bases usually had a church for the Catholics, a synagogue, and a single church for all the various Protestants. Army chaplains came from a variety of religious backgrounds, and were expected to minister to everyone who sought their care. The Protestant services might be run by a Methodist, or a Lutheran, or some other flavor, depending on who had been assigned to that duty. Because of that, those Sunday services tended to be rather generic, as they needed to speak to the needs of the many. Anyone was free to go off-base and gather with those of their specific denomination if they chose, and I’m sure some did, but military folks tended to stick together. Army society in the 50’s and early 60’s was pretty rigid, and the social expectations were exacting and sometimes brutal, especially for Army wives. My folks were nominally Methodists, but not particularly religious. They went to church because it was expected as part of the social role of an Army officer and his wife.
