General Orders #1 General Orders Series 2014-2015 1731 Shore Road Unit 42 September 2014 Seaville, NJ 08230-1383

Greetings Sister: It is with great anticipation that I look forward, with pleasure, to my year as your National President. I appreciate your confidence and faith in me and I ask for your support this year as we strive to “keep green the memory” of our ancestors. Thank you to all who attended and took part in the 124th National Convention in Gettysburg, PA. I would like to offer a special Thank You to my PA Department Sisters who hosted a very successful convention. Job well done! A big Thank You to installing officer, Lesley Dean, PNP, who is also my National Counselor. It was an honor to have my sons, Ryan and Brent, escort me to the National President’s station. Thank You to Carole Morton, PNP for granting permission for my family to attend the installation ceremony. I am the proud descendant of two Civil War soldiers, one on my maternal side and one on my paternal side. My maternal ancestor, Lieutenant Colonel William Lemon, from western Pennsylvania was killed in the Battle of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865. The other, Henry Mauk, from Philadelphia, fought in Gettysburg, PA in July of 1863. He survived the war and settled in Philadelphia to raise his family and worked as a machinist in manufacturing. In the Spring of 2015 we will be closing out the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the Civil War, concluding with the Lincoln Funeral Coalition in May in Springfield, IL. I kindly ask all Departments to email me as soon as possible of the dates and place of your annual Department Convention. Early planning for travel arrangements on my part greatly increases my availability to attend. One of my goals this year is to also make a visit to as many Detached Tents as possible, please email me some of your upcoming meeting dates. I strongly recommend that you make a habit of checking the National website at www.duvcw.org on a regular basis. Items are continually added and information is updated routinely. Please remember that the user name and password will change on October 1. Passwords are never to be communicated in written form. Passwords should only be given orally at a meeting or by a call to your Tent president. Members-At-Large can call the National President, MAL representative or Membership Chair, for the password and user name. I welcome your advice and your gentle criticism, and I will do my best to uphold the trust and confidence you have placed in me to preserve our Proud Heritage. 12 GAR ANCESTORS WANTED GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC PROJECT On April 6, 1866, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson founded a fraternal organization limited to honorably discharged veterans of the Civil War. They had to have served between April 12, 1861 and April 9, 1865 in the Army, Navy, Marines Corps or Revenue Cutter Service to qualify. Dr. Stephenson called the organization, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). During its existence, the GAR was aided in its work by five organizations, which are today referred to as the Allied Orders and includes our own Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 (DUVCW). Eligibility for membership in the DUVCW is based on the eligibility as formerly required for membership in the GAR.

At the 2016 National Convention, we will be honoring Dr. Stephenson and your GAR grandfathers, with your help.

From now until February 1, 2016, we will be accepting information on your GAR ancestor along with his photograph. The photograph may be him in his military uniform, GAR uniform or as a civilian. If you do not have a picture of him, a photograph of his headstone will suffice. If no photograph exists, you can still participate by providing your ancestor’s GAR information for the Roll Call. You can submit as many GAR ancestors as you have, but only one photograph per ancestor will be allowed. The information and photograph (PLEASE DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS) submitted will be used as part of a program at the 2016 National Convention. Photographs submitted will NOT be returned. 13 THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 perpetuates the memories of their fathers and grandfathers who served in the Civil War. During this period of the sesquicentennial, we reflect upon their sacrifices to preserve the Union. These patriotic soldiers are honored and remembered by their descendants for their willingness to defend their Country and Flag.

There is a group of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country and are not remembered by this Order. These “forgotten soldiers” died on the field of battle, died from wounds or disease or were captured and died in prison. Their deaths cost them the opportunity for a family and descendants to honor and remember their valorous deeds.

It is time for us to honor and remember the sacrifices of these soldiers. EVA GRAY TENT 2, MICHIGAN FLOWER PLANTING AT OAKHILL CEMETERY

Members of Eva Gray Tent 2, Grand Rapids, MI, met together for their annual potluck and flower planting at Oakhill Cemetery on May 22, 2014. (Yes we have a potluck in the cemetery!) Following a delicious dinner, the group planted flowers in the large urn in the Soldiers Cemetery, A.B. Watson GAR Post 395 burial plot. Following an idea given us at the Department of Michigan Convention by National President Carole Morton, we placed pennies on the tops of the more than 50 headstones in this section. Next we visited the burial site of our namesake Eva Gray and her husband Sgt. Freeland Gray to plant flowers in the urn which we placed there as our way of remembering them. The final stop in Oakhill Cemetery Susan Noder, Beverly Summers, Cheryl Bignall, Kathy was to the Custer GAR Post 5 section where other Civil Cook, Wenda Fore, Laura Schmidt, Dian Thomas War soldiers are buried. We planted new flowers in that urn, and placed pennies on their headstones. We count it a privilege to honor and remember all those in their final resting place – reading their names as we walk through the many rows, and also remembering the Unknown Soldiers buried there. THIRSA GOSSETT TENT 2, OREGON MEMORIAL DAY

Each year on Memorial Day, Thirsa Gossett, Tent 2, Salem, Oregon takes part in a Memorial Service conducted by the VFW at the GAR plot in the Eugene . In addition to the burials in the GAR plot there are many other Civil War veterans buried in this cemetery, including Warden and Thirsa Gossett. Very near the Gossett’s is another Civil war nurse, Elizabeth McNutt Rhems. Sister Shawndel Lindfors noticed that a blue spruce tree located next to Elizabeth’s headstone was beginning to dislodge the headstone and asked President Carolyn Hall if it could be addressed. In July Dorothy Bradner of the cemetery committee contacted President Hall regarding some records from the defunct Eugene Tent 16. We agreed to meet and get the record books from her to pass on. At that time President Hall mentioned the troublesome tree and Mrs. Bradner said she would look into it. On the day that they agreed to meet to exchange the old record books, the cemetery committee had already arranged to have the tree removed and it was gone when Sister Lindfors arrived. Tent 2 will now make a time to go to the cemetery and clean some of the headstones that have algae or moss on them. (Article submitted by Carolyn Hall)

Following the presentation we toured the beautiful, newly remodeled, Mental Health and Wellness Building.

Our next stop was the Fort Custer National Cemetery. We viewed a video of the National Cemeteries and the services offered to veterans and their families, such as the free gravesite for the veterans, his or her spouse, and any children who pass away before the age of 23. Our guide, Greg, directed us to the cemetery where he shared information on the many ceremonies and observances held at the cemetery each year. Greg, an employee, and also a veteran escorted us to “The Forgotten Twenty-Six”, the graves of 26 German POWs. From their brochure: “Sixteen of the men were killed or died as a result of an accident on October 31, 1945 when a truck returning German Prisoners of War from a work detail to the POW Camp at Fort Custer, collided with a train at an unguarded railroad crossing at Blissfield, Michigan. The other 10 died of natural causes while Prisoners of War at Fort Custer.”

CA/NV CORNELIA HANCOCK TENT 91 2014 NATIONAL DUV SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

A desire to assist and care for others is at the heart of Clarissa Michael’s broad range of interests and abilities. From elementary school age, she sacrificed her recess time to volunteer in the classroom of special needs students. An avid horseback rider since the age of eight, Clarissa was also a volunteer at Heads Up Horse Therapy, assisting developmentally disabled children and adults through an equestrian experience. Clarissa is also a member of the Cornelia Hancock CA/NV Tent. Now a senior at Canyon High School, Clarissa has kept her academics at the top of her priority list. She currently has a 4.3 GPA and ranks nineteenth in her class of 539 students. A member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Math Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation, Clarissa is also active in several service clubs, including DFYIT (Drug Free Youth in Town), Bible Club, and Helping Hands, which is a tutoring program at the local library. She was a member of the track team and is in the high school choir, also taking opportunities to sing in church groups. Faith has an important place in Clarissa’s life, as a member of church youth groups, through which she has attended eight church camps and completed a mission trip where students built homes for Native Apaches. Dovetailing her strong background of experience in nurturing others with her mastery in math and science, Clarissa plans to attend college, exploring the fields of medical and social sciences, hoping to further her lifelong path of healing and helping members of society. Eight year old Paige Johnson, a new Brownie Scout, and her grandmother, Norma Overton from Eva Gray Tent 2, in Grand Rapids, chose the Lowell, MI cemetery to visit for Memorial Day 2014.

Following information on placing pennies on the headstones of military veterans, the pair went through the cemetery where Paige read the soldier's name and the war he served in, and placed a penny of remembrance on the headstone. Their walk ended at the Civil War Monument where Norma had more of an opportunity to share about the veterans and the importance of remembering their service and for many, their sacrifice in giving their lives for freedom. Later relatives of Norma's were at the cemetery and noticed the pennies on the headstones of their veterans, which led them to ask Norma more about the remembrance - and provided a great learning tool for both Paige and the family members buried there.
