IBM Asia Pacific Software Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1 AP08-0385 Key prerequisites Refer to the Technical information section for details. Planned availability date December 12, 2008 Description IBM 4690 Operating System V6 (4690 OS V6) introduces a new infrastructure which lays the groundwork for the future. 4690 OS V6 provides two operating modes; classic and enhanced. At this time, classic is available for both the controller and the terminal, while enhanced mode is only available on the controller. Classic mode continues to use the current OS infrastructure. This mode is intended provide investment protection by allowing 4690 OS V6 to support the functions and most of the same hardware that has been supported in previous 4690 versions. Some new hardware and new functions available in 4690 OS V6 may require enhanced mode. Other functions, such as the new RMA software distribution support, will be available in both modes. The current OS user interfaces and programming APIs continue to be available, allowing current applications to run in enhanced mode. Enhanced mode not only introduces a new hardware tm interface layer below classic 4690 OS, but it also supports some additional IBM System x servers, including selected IBM blade server models. Enhanced mode is also required to exploit other new functions such as USB flash memory drives. Systems running supported versions of 4690 OS that meet the minimum resource requirements of 4690 OS V6 may be migrated to 4690 OS V6 and continue to run in classic mode. Installation is only supported in enhanced mode. The following new functions are available in controller enhanced mode only: • Expanded support for new IBM server hardware There is now expanded controller coverage and more hardware choices to select from when choosing a store controller. The following controller hardware is now supported: – HS12 blade server – Blade Center "S" – X3200-M2 with SAS HDDs For more detailed information about what hardware is supported on V6, refer to the Hardware requirements section under Technical information. • Remote Management Agent (RMA) Master Agent on controller This function allows the RMA Master Agent (MA) to run on 4690 OS. • Ability to boot the supplemental image from HDD or memory key This function adds the capability to boot a supplemental CD image from the hard drive or a memory key. • Ability to create a supplemental image on CD or memory key This function adds the capability to create supplemental media on either a CD or a memory key from the hard drive. The following new functions are available in both controller classic mode or enhanced mode: • Additional system management capabilities IBM Asia Pacific Software Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2 AP08-0385 – Device instrumentation This expands the 4690 OS V5.2 RMA functionality with additional POS device instrumentation for MSRs, 2x20 displays, cash drawers, and 4820 displays. – Software distribution This enhancement integrates the current 4690 OS remote migration/Applied Software Maintenance (ASM) process into RMA. RMA in conjunction with IBM Director can be used to schedule and transmit software packages enabled for RMA distribution to individual or groups of stores. • Unlock locked ID API for excessive incorrect login attempts This provides an API to allow an authorized user, through a user program, to unlock an ID without waiting until the lock out time is reached or until the next system IPL. • Enhanced SSH login This allows an SSH user to change their expired password when signing on to SSH. • Support for new IBM 4610 SureMark printer Models 2CR and 2NR This enhancement supports the new IBM 4610 SureMark printer. It works in either compatibility or native mode. To take advantage of all the new printer features, it must be running in native mode. Refer to Hardware Announcement AG08-0370, dated June 17, 2008. • Support for new IBM modular ANPOS and IBM modular 67-key POS keyboards This version of 4690 OS adds support for the new IBM modular ANPOS and IBM modular 67-key POS keyboards. The support includes a USB attached IBM modular 67-key POS keyboard, with optional Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) and an optional keylock. The IBM modular ANPOS support includes both a USB attached version and a PS/2 attached version. The USB version has options for MSR and keylocks. The PS/2 version has support for an optional MSR and optional keylock. • Command line logging utility This customer initiated function combines the individual session log files into one single large log file to improve systems manageability. • Report module level enhancement This function provides module-level reporting of zipped file contents. It adds the ability to compare the checksums of the individual files extracted from each Zip file repository with the stored checksums of the files shipped. • TCP/IP Diagnostic Aids A series of serviceability enhancements have been made to TCP/IP support in 4690 OS. These include better event messaging, provision of additional information about a particular event, more comprehensive return codes being logged, and socket trace capability enhancement. • Ability to restart background application in same background screen slot This new API provides improved usability by allowing a configured background application which has ended to be restarted in the same slot it previously occupied. Accessibility by people with disabilities A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at http://www.ibm.com/able/product_accessibility/index.html Statement of direction It is IBM's intent to provide the following enhancements by fourth quarter, 2009: • The modular ANPOS biometric reader IBM Asia Pacific Software Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3 AP08-0385 • Enhanced mode terminal support All statements regarding IBM's plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal and represent only goals and objectives.
