March 17-23, 2011 Volume XII, No. 11 Hawaiian transporting disaster response teams to Japan Hawaiian Airlines is transporting specialized teams of disaster response personnel from the mainland to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport this week. On March 14, Hawaiian flew seven members of the Eagles’ Wings Foundation from Seattle to Haneda via Honolulu. The Florida-based foundation is dedicated to providing trained emergency responders to disaster response efforts worldwide. This team’s mission is to assess areas of damage in Japan and to improve coordination in the distribution of supplies and aid from other organizations and individuals. Hawaiian is providing the air transportation to Japan at no cost in coordination with AirLink, a nonprofit organization devoted to working with air carriers on providing emergency travel in response to disasters worldwide. Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s president and CEO, is a board member of AirLink. Hawaiian expects to transport two more teams of emergency responders to Japan this week and plans to accommodate additional AirLink missions. Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawaii will be performing the traditional art of piping and drumming. Free and open to the public! The Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawaii began in 1985 as the “Shamrock Pipe Band,” but the Irish name was limiting and it soon changed to its present name. There are currently 18 pipers, four drummers and an Irish dance team, as well as a number of students. One of the special features of the band is the symbolic military attire of the members in the Black Watch tartan kilt. The band joined together with members of the Black Watch (42nd Royal Highland Regiment) during the regiment’s training visit to Hawaii. In celebration of the March 1871 birth of Hawai‘i Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, Royal Hawaiian Center joins the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in a day of Hawaiian arts: folk, fine, and performing, Hawaiian music, and traditional and modern hula. Demonstrations and displays will fill The Royal Grove with the sites and sounds of old Hawai‘i. Prince Kūhiō was a nephew of King Kalākaua and Queen Kapi‘olani. After the overthrow, the Prince became Hawai‘i’s second delegate to the U. S. Congress. The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921 and the Hawaiian Civic Clubs movement are legacies of Prince Kalaniana‘ole. His home was named Pualeilani, meaning “royal garland of flowers,” and was located in Waikīkī at what is now Kūhiō Beach. The Pualeilani Festival of Arts is part of the month-long Prince Kūhiō Festival. This event is free and open to the public.
