Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight is something we are immensely proud to present as it very much reflects our philosophy. We combine the resources and talents of people who are blind, sighted or have low vision to make a difference to the lives of thousands of Australians. Like the vast chorus Dr Kevin Murfitt Mr Gerard Menses that will soon ring out in the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Chair Chief Executive Officer together we are creating something special – a brighter future for children who are blind or have low vision. Proceeds from this event go towards Vision Australia’s Children’s Services, which enables young people who are blind or have low vision to increase their choices in life. We do this by training a child to interpret their environment. For example, we may teach a child that the sound of a particular wind chime means they are outside their front door. We also advise parents so they are equipped to give the child the best possible start in life. In order to continue to provide services free of charge we need your help. Each donation assists us to support a child who is blind or has low vision to reach their potential. An event of this size can’t happen without our supporters. This year we are pleased to welcome Myer as Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight presenting partner. They join supporters such as long-time Carols broadcaster the Call Nine Network, plus 3AW, Magic 1278 and The Herald Sun. 1300 55 84 58 On behalf of Vision Australia, we’d like to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and a fulfilling New Year. For 10-year-old Jacob, Kate, aged eight, and five-year-old Nicholas, the celebrations start on Christmas Eve when the family tunes into the television broadcast of Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight. This year will be extra special as the children and their parents, Jayne and David, will be attending the show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl for the first time. Jacob, Kate, Nicholas and their mum will experience the big night a little differently to most audience members. This is because Jayne and her children are legally blind due to aniridia, which affects iris development. Because they can’t control the amount of light that enters their eyes they are unable to see far. The children also have nystagmus, which causes involuntary eye movements. Yet their limited sight does not stop them from doing the same things as their friends. “They believe they can do anything,” says Jayne. Vision Australia has worked with the family for a decade to ensure the children have the confidence, skills and equipment to live the lives they choose. One of our Early Childhood Educators visited Jayne and David after Jacob’s birth to offer support and advice. An Early Childhood Educator continues to visit Nicholas at preschool to observe his progress. This will be the fourth time that I’ve officially performed at the event, but my involvement with Carols goes way back. As a kid, Christmas Eve was always a big night as it gave me the chance to sing along and put on a show for my family. Even though I’ve sung at many large events in the past few years, I’m still very excited about stepping onto the stage at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Nothing compares to looking out over a sea of smiling, candlelit faces. There’s a real sense of community at this event and the audience is so diverse. You’re never too old to enjoy this gig! Let’s not forget that while Carols is a lot of fun, it’s also an important fundraiser for children who are blind or have low vision. In the past few years I have achieved quite a few of my dreams, so I’m happy to be involved in an event that is helping hundreds of children just like the Laws to attain their life goals. On behalf of my fellow performers I’d like to wish you all the best for the festive season and 2008.
