Significantachievementspart6 Proof 1963 became a phenomenal year for Motown,with three recording acts topping the Billboard Hot R&B Side Singles Chart. The first artist to achieve the feat was the late Mary Wells with the first number one of her career, produced and written by Smokey Robinson. The single “Two Lovers” peaked at number one week-ending 19th January 1963 (4 weeks). The number one single "Two Lovers" was taken from this album This was followed by the then newly-signed Little Stevie Wonder with a single entitled “Fingertips (Part 1)” which topped the singles charts on two Billboard listings: the Billboard Hot R&B Side ���“Two Lovers” – Billboard Singles Chart week-ending 3rd August 1963 (6 Hot R&B Side Singles Chart weeks) and the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart th 1963 (4 weeks) week-ending 10 August 1963 (3 weeks). Also the single achieved similar success on the Cash Box Pop Singles Chart survey week-ending 3rd August 1963 (4 weeks). It was the first live single in Billboard history to go to number one. The parent album “The 12 Year Old Genius” became the first live album according to Billboard to peak at number one on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, week- ending 24th August 1963 (1 week). The entire album was produced by the legendary Berry Gordy Jr. The single “Fingertips (Part 1)" was taken from this number one album ���“Fingertips (Part 1)” – Billboard Hot R&B Side Singles Chart 1963 (6 weeks) Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart 1963 (3 Weeks) Cash Box Pop Singles Chart 1963 (4 weeks) Martha Reeves & the Vandellas were the first female group to have a major hit with Holland- The following month, on 14th September 1963, Dozier-Holland with "Heat Wave" Martha Reeves & the Vandellas were at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B Side Singles Chart ���“Heat Wave” – Billboard Hot (4 weeks) with their single “Heat Wave”, produced R&B Side Singles Chart 1963 by Motown’s main song-writing and music- (4 weeks) production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, the premier hit-making team at the label. The label dominated the number one position that year for a total of 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot R&B Side Singles Chart. All these brilliant tracks and albums featured The Funk Brothers with vocal support from The Andantes. Kevin started his journey from personal experiences living in Jamaica from the early 1970s until 1979 when Disco ruled the charts. He was listening to music coming out of America via radio and seeing performances on television and at live concerts at the music theatre at college and at other live venues by many great legends, during a time when black music made inroads into popular culture globally. While he was living in America, he began teaching music history. During this period Kevin was involved in the creation of special training programmes and workshops for music teachers in South Florida schools, using music history as the foundation, to build exciting programmes of study and support for education professional. Kevin provides consultancy services for multi-media organisations, schools, recording artists, cultural and faith-based groups, and entertainment professionals all within the framework of “arts and cultural history”. His breadth and depth of knowledge is part of the reason his writings are sought after and particularly favoured by music students of all types, and those who really want to know real music gold nuggets. In recognition of his work as a music historian Kevin was appointed in 2015 onto the Executive Board of the UK based GMIA (Gospel Music Industry Alliance), serving and representing British Gospel Music in its relationship to Gospel Music sectors in other territories across the world..

Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Wells Memorial Diversity Award, given annually to recognize outstanding efforts and accomplishments of individuals and/or teams in diversity and pluralism in Extension education programming. Dianne Lennon provided these cherished thoughts of Mary Wells. "In 1992, Mary recruited me to travel with her to Germany to attend the International Federation for Home Economics. Mary was inquisitive about global cultures as she strongly promoted the progress of humanity. Sessions of the Congress enriched us professionally while a visit to a family farm left us amazed upon seeing the cattle housed in a structure attached to the house, thus the German way of life. Our tour guide advised against travelling with too much luggage. Mary kept it simple with one huge piece, a few millimeters smaller than a trunk. That seemed like an okay idea until it was time for us to transport our luggage across the city, then numerous flights of stairs to board the train to Berlin for a post tour. The struggle was tremendous; however, Mary persevered, laughing and tugging. It was necessary to turn back and help her down the final 20-step staircase as we had only 10 minutes to board the train. Mary never discussed her health challenges with cancer which claimed her life at the young age of 60. I learned about them following her death on March 25, 1996.

It's important to note though, that the African- American owned label wouldn’t have reached so many monumental milestones without The Supremes, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, Tammi Terrell and Gladys Knight. The success of these talented women proved that women voices needed to be heard through radio airwaves everywhere. This is why it’s important to acknowledge these women during the celebration of the label’s 60th anniversary.     Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Mickey Stevenson PERSON Stevenson, Mickey, 1937- Alternative Names: Mickey Stevenson; Life Dates: January 4, 1937- Place of Birth: Detroit, Michigan, USA Residence: West Hollywood, CA Work: CA Occupations: Music Executive Biographical Note Music executive Mickey Stevenson was born on January 4, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, and raised by his mother, blues singer Kitty “Brown Gal” Stevenson, and stepfather Ted Moore. From the age of eight, Stevenson performed in a singing trio with his younger brothers. In 1950, the group won first place at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in New York City. However, Stevenson’s musical career halted in 1953 when his mother, the group’s coach and producer, when his mother, the group’s coach and producer, passed away from cancer. Stevenson attended Detroit’s Northeastern High School. Stevenson joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956, where he was part of a special unit that organized entertainment for the troops. While on furlough in 1958, Stevenson saw a performance by the Four Aims—later known as the Four Tops—which inspired him to leave the military and pursue a career in music. Stevenson joined the Hamptones, touring with famed bandleader Lionel Hampton. Upon his return to Detroit, Stevenson met Berry Gordy, who told him of his plans to start a record label. Stevenson briefly worked as a producer and songwriter for Carmen Carver Murphy’s gospel label, HOB Records, until 1959, when Gordy hired him to head the artists and repertoire department at Motown Records. As Motown’s A&R executive, Stevenson was responsible for talent scouting, auditions, and managing the artistic development of recording artists and songwriters.
