Such a scrutiny makes it necessary to focus on individuals’ subjective experiences and witnesses to the period. In this context, this study analyzes the reader letters sent to Ahmet Emin Yalman, one of the most eminent intellectual journalists of the period between 1945- 1960. It is hard to believe that the democracy perceptions of the urban middle-class individuals were not fed by the hegemonic struggles and political developments of the period, and the democracy debates brought to the newspaper columns. In this respect, in this study, on the one hand the debates on democracy that took place at the intellectual and political levels of the period were examined, and on the other hand the class characters of Yalman’s readers were analyzed in order to reveal to what extent Yalman’s readers were fed by these discussions and influenced by the hegemonic struggles. Then, the contents of the reader letters were analyzed within the framework of a dual narrative. It was revealed that the democracy perceptions of the urban middle- iv class individuals were shaped under the influence of two factors during the period: the populist discourse that ‘the manifestation of the national will’, and the liberal- democratic mechanisms of checks and balances that limiting the executive power. As a result, this study reveals that the democracy perceptions of the urban middle-class individuals were shaped under the influence of the hegemonic struggle between elite factions, and the liberal ideology. Keywords: Reader Letters, Democracy Perception, Urban Middle-Classes, Populism, Liberal-Democratic Principles. v ÖZ 1945-1960 ARASI DÖNEMDE TÜRKİYE’DEKİ DEMOKRASİ ALGILARI: KENTLİ ORTA SINIF OKUYUCULARIN AHMET EMİN YALMAN’A YOLLADIKLARI MEKTUPLARIN ANALİZİ AYAN, Candaş Yüksek Lisans, Siyaset Bilimi ve Kamu Yönetimi Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Prof. Dr. Necmi ERDOĞAN Eylül 2020, 196 sayfa Bu çalışma 1945-1960 yılları arası dönemde Türkiye’deki kentli orta sınıflara mensup bireylerin demokrasi algılarını incelemektedir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Okuyucu Mektupları, Demokrasi Algısı, Kentli Orta Sınıflar, Popülizm, Liberal-Demokratik Prensipler. vii DEDICATION To My Dear Family who always supported my education, and To My Beloved İlknur. viii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Writing this thesis during a pandemic has been a quite backbreaking process, and it would not have been possible to finalize it without the support and encouragement of certain people. Before all else, I would like to thank my supervisor Prof. Necmi Erdoğan, for I owe him the elimination of several boundaries in my mind as I largely benefited from his classes and works in developing the core ideas constituting the backbone of this thesis. The thesis has become stronger and much more interesting with the long-term meticulous support, guidance and confidence he did not hesitate to show. I also wish to express my gratitude to the examining committee members for their critique and suggestions. I am thankful to Assoc. Prof. Fahriye Üstüner for her sincere criticisms and advices on my thesis, upon which she gave me constructive comments, along with her support of any kind. Besides taking part in my jury, I should express my special thanks to Assist. Prof. Kadir Dede for his comments and advices on my thesis about which he sincerely stated that he has been waiting for a long time to be completed. I owe my twenty-year-long close friend Aykut Öztürk a debt of gratitude for helping me access the materials on which this thesis was built. I should also thank him for his valuable feedbacks and advices. Without his support it would have been much more difficult for me to complete this thesis. I am grateful to Özgür Umut Baz for his patience and nurturing comments, and his sincere solicitude in making a word-by-word reading of the thesis. He strived much more than I would do for the language of this thesis. I should also thank Ulaş Taştekin, Erdem Güven, and Emir Aydoğan for their valuable feedbacks and advices. They have also been kind enough to listen to my concerns patiently and cheered me up in our regular enjoyable gatherings. ix I also want to acknowledge the Academic Staff of Political Science and Public Administration Department in Hacettepe University and my friends there for their provision of a peaceful academic environment in which I could pursue my studies for the thesis thoroughly. I should also thank Prof. Mete Kaan Kaynar for his contributions at the initial phases of this thesis and for his provision of me with significant sources about the issue. Needless to say, I owe my parents, sister, and of course my precious wife and friend İlknur a great debt of gratitude for all their love, everlasting support to my education, and sharing of all the high and low moments of my life. İlknur did not hesitate to share her companionship with me, which made me feel untroubled all the time. She did everything to ease my difficulties, worries, and make me happy. Finally, it is still both mournful and lovely to recall the memory of my grandfather Süleyman Ersoy. I wish he, one among the last generation of teachers who graduated from the village institutes, was alive today to see me share his determination to learn and teach. x TABLE OF CONTENTS PLAGIARISM ....................................................................................................... iii ABSTRACT ............................................................................................................iv ÖZ ......................................................................................................................... vii DEDICATION ..................................................................................................... viii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................ix TABLE OF CONTENTS .........................................................................................xi LIST OF TABLES...............................................................................................

He discusses the contradictory positions of two broad groups of scholars on the reliability of these archives, concluding that the Ottoman Archives agree with the information found in the archives of the United States, Britain, Germany, and Austria. He discusses the various categories of Ottoman documents, which mostly came out during the trials related to the Armenian Genocide, which took place from 1919 to 1921, and makes clear that there was a wide-ranging cleansing operation of the archives after the armistice in 1918.

Abstract Liberalism is widely known for its internal inconsistencies. Liberals adopt divergent and sometimes conflicting attitudes towards state-society relations, religion, nationalism, and political economy. The ambiguous nature of liberal ideology has also triggered several discussions in Turkish-Ottoman political thought. In this study, the position of liberals in between the government and the opposition, and their changing and obscure politics are studied with reference to the life, times and ideas of Ahmet Emin Yalman. This also entails an analysis of the development of liberal thought in Turkey. Key Words: Liberalism, Ahmet Emin Yalman, Turkish Political Thought, Vatan daily. * Yrd. Doç. • Another Enemy: the Dönmes Or Crypto-Jews1
Another Enemy: The Dönmes or Crypto-Jews1 [For those unfamiliar with modern Turkish orthography: apart from the umlauted vowels found in Turkish, ö and ü, which are pronounced like their German equivalents, there are several other letters pronounced differently than their English equivalents: ‘c’ is pronounced like a hard ‘j’ (as in ‘jump’), ‘ç’ is pronounced like the English ‘ch’ (as in ‘church’), ‘ğ’ merely extends the vowel preceding it, while the undotted ‘ı’ is darker and more glottal than the English ‘i’ (as in the unwritten ‘i’ sound in trrrr), and the Turkish dotted ‘i’ is pronounced like the English long ‘e’ (as in ‘free’). Thus the word ‘Bıçakçıoğlu’ would be pronounced: b’chack-chih-owe-loo] An ‘enemy’ frequently encountered in the anti-Semitic rhetoric that occupies a significant place in the intellectual world of Turkey’s right is the crypto-Jewish community known as the Dönmes.2 The main reason that they are seen as ‘enemies’ is the opinion, widespread among the Turkish public, that converts to Islam never truly accept the religion of Islam and continue to practice their Christianity or Judaism in secret. This is reflected in the popular saying ‘Dönmes (religious converts) never change.’ (‘Dönmeler aslında dönmez’).3 But although this view is held towards converts in general, when the term dönme is used in rightist parlance, it appears, with few exeptions, not in reference to Greek, Armenian or even Jewish converts to Islam, but more specifically to the followers of the 17th century Jewish messianic claimant Sabbatai Sevi and their descendants. Following Sevi’s lead, many of his adherents outwardly converted to Islam, while continuing to observe the heterodox Judaic practices instituted by their leader.

  • The Dönmeh: Sabbataist Legacy in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey
Cultural Relations Quarterly Review Spring 2014 The Dönmeh: Sabbataist legacy in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey Ömer Bilal Almak – Csilla Morauszki András Lőrincz – Zuzana Balcová Abstract: The aim of the article is to introduce to the foundation and the history of the Sabbataist community in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. The article is focusing on a relatively small number of Jewish descendants in the mid-17th century whose community could survive and their members managed to reach high societal and administrative positions by the late 19th century. The Dönmehs later played a key role in reform movements which led to a political transition in the 1920s. This paper analyses the relation of the Dönmeh’s identities and the community’s preferences regarding the form of government. Keywords: Ottoman Empire, Turkey, Tanzimat, Judaism, Dönmeh, Sabbataists Introduction The Jewish religion, Judaism, which is considered one of the oldest religions of human civilization, has been marked by several historical milestones during its existence. Some of them influenced Judaism positively and led to its theological enrichment, some of them, on the other side, had far reaching negative effects on the faith’s preservation. Sabbatai Sevi1 was one of those who contributed momentously to the evolution of Judaism and even nowadays, 1 The name of Sabbatai Sevi is spelled in various forms in different publications. Sabatay Sevi and Sabetay Sevi (in modern Turkish), Sabbatai Sevi (Cengiz Sisman), Sabbatai Tsevi (Pawel Maciejko), Sabbatai Zevi (in some English references) and – following more genuine way in pronunciation – Shabtai Tzvi (Marc Baer) or Shabtai Zvi (Dovid Rossoff).

FORGERIES VS. HISTORICAL RESEARCH ARAM ANDONIAN’S “MEMOIRS OF NAIM BEY” AND THE CONTEMPORARY ATTEMPTS TO DEFEND THEIR “AUTHENTICTY” Maxime Gauin Historian [email protected] Abstract: This article analyses the attempts made, since 1986, to maintain that the “documents” published in 1920 by Aram Andonian are probably, if not almost certainly, “authentic”. A systematic checking of the assertions defending Andonian’s work proves that these attempts are not less misleading than the book which they support. Andonian’s forgeries served for dec Keywords: Aram Andonian, Armenian forced displacement, ASALA, Vahakn N. Dadrian, JCAG/ARA, Boghos Nubar, propaganda, Ramkavar, Yves Ternon, terrorism. Introduction For years, one of the most used “evidence” of the “Armenian genocide” allegation were the “Andonian documents”. Aram Andonian (1875-1951) compiled his material, i.e. the so-called “Memoirs of Naim Bey”, the so-called “official documents” supposedly sent by leaders of the Committee Union and Progress (CUP, the party which ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1913 to 1918) and his proper comments, apparently in the Spring or the Summer of 1919. The French and English translations were published later in 1920. The compilation and the publication in Western languages happened in the context of attempts to obtain the largest territorial (“integral”) Armenia, from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea,1 a design which would mean a vast operation of ethnic cleansing, as acknowledged by the Armenian leaders themselves.2 The English version of some “telegrams” was republished in July 1921 by the monthly Current History. 1 Houri Berberian “The Delegation of Integral Armenia — From Greater Armenia to Lesser Armenia,” Armenian Review, XLIV-3, Autumn 1991, pp.

  • A “Crime Against Humanity”?
Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, 2015 Vol. 35, No. 1, 141–157 Review Essay “Proving” a “Crime against Humanity”? The Young Turks’ Crime against Humanity: The Armenian Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing in the Ottoman Empire TANER AKÇAM, 2012 Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press 528 pp., US$ 37.80 (hb), ISBN-10: 0691159564, ISBN-13: 978-0691159560 Introduction After a presentation of what he considers as the relevant context (the Ottoman archives, Balkan wars and their aftermath, “ethnic cleansing” against the Greeks), Taner Akçam bases his “demonstration” primarily on Ottoman and German sources to “prove” that a “genocidal” decision was taken by the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) leader- ship in March 1915, after discussion with the German government, and carried out during the war, mostly during the years 1915 and 1916, not only by massacres and depor- tations but also by “forced assimilation” of women and children. Taner Akçam finishes by a chapter consisting in a strident response to some arguments developed by both Turkish and non-Turkish historians who have criticized the “Armenian genocide” label (especially the exemptions of relocation, the issue of the Special Organization and the punishment of Muslin criminals from 1915 to 1917). Taner Akçam’s previous book in English, A Shameful Act (New York: Metropolitan Books, 2006), contained numerous typographical and factual errors.1 Such flaws appear once again in The Young Turks’—the present book under review. For instance, even the name of the important Turkish city of Erzurum in eastern Anatolia is not in the index and other examples are provided below.

It explores the new realities that the war created in the form of mass conscription, a state-controlled economy, government requisitioning of grain and possessions, widespread shortages, forcible deportations and voluntary displacements, death, and grief. Using archival and non-archival sources, it also focuses on how Ottomans wrestled with these wartime realities. World War I required the most comprehensive mobilization of men and resources in the history of the Ottoman Empire. In order to wage a war of unprecedented scope effectively, the Ottoman government assumed new powers, undertook new responsibilities, and expanded its authority in many areas. Civilian and military authorities constantly experimented with new policies in order to meet the endless needs of the war and extended the state’s capacity to intervene in the distant corners of the empire to extract people and resources to a degree not seen before. Victory in the war became increasingly dependent on the successful integration of the armies in the field and the home-front population, a process that inescapably led to the erosion of the distinction between the military and civilian realms.
