NATIONAL PUBLIC PARKS ASSOCIATION HONORS MCALLISTER WITH LIFETIME AWARD

Brad Gilbert named NPPTA 2014 Gene Scott Renaissance Award winner

AUSTIN, Texas – The National Pubic Parks Tennis Association presented the 2014 Hollis and Jean Smith Lifetime Achievement Award during the USTA Semi Annual Meeting in to Ken McAllister of Austin, Texas.

McAllister has served on the NPPTA Board since 2000 and as its President for the past 10 years. He has been the Executive Director of USTA Texas for 24 years. He has previously served as President of the Texas Tennis Coaches Association, the USPTA Texas Division, and is a member of the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame.

Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Jodie Adams, Alan Schwartz, Billy Jean King, Pat Freebody, Kurt Kamperman, and Karen Ford.

The National Parks Tennis Association has been promoting public park tennis since 1923. Its purpose is support public tennis in the United States and its main event is the annual National Public Parks Tennis Championship which has just completed its 88th event, each held at various public venues throughout the country.

The 2014 Gene Scott Renaissance Award was presented at a ceremony in Oakland, California to Brad Gilbert. Brad’s father, Barrie Gilbert, accepted the award on his behalf. Brad was doing the television broadcast at Winston-Salem at the time.

Brad is well known internationally as a top player, coach and broadcaster. The award focusses on his contribution to public park tennis and specifically the Davie Tennis Stadium in Oakland. In a letter of appreciation, Brad speaks of growing up on public tennis courts and the influence of those teaching pros on his early tennis life.
