Traditional views of these relationships are currently being challenged by molecular data, but the debate has so far made little use of recent palaeontological advances that provide an independent perspective on deep sponge evolution. This review summarises the available information, particularly where the fossil record reveals extinct character combinations that directly impinge on our understanding of high-level relationships and evolutionary origins. An evolutionary outline is proposed that includes the major early fossil groups, combining the fossil record with molecular phylogenetics. The key points are as follows. (1) Crown-group sponge classes are difficult to recognise in the fossil record, with the exception of demosponges, the origins of which are now becoming clear. (2) Hexactine spicules were present in the stem lineages of Hexactinellida, Demospongiae, Silicea and probably also Calcarea and Porifera; this spicule type is not diagnostic of hexactinellids in the fossil record. (3) Reticulosans form the stem lineage of Silicea, and probably also Porifera. (4) At least some early-branching groups possessed biminerallic spicules of silica (with axial filament) combined with an outer layer of calcite secreted within an organic sheath.

ROBISON Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3EQ and Department of Geology, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045 Abstract—The fossil priapulid worms Ottoia prolifica, Selkirkia willoughbyi n. sp., Selkirkia spencei, and Selkirkia sp. are illustrated from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. New records of O. pro ca from the Spence Shale and Marjum Formation represent notable geographic and stratigraphic extensions of its previously unique occurrence in the Stephen Formation of British Columbia. O. prolifica has a range through much of the Middle Cambrian (?15 Ma), during which time it shows minimal morphological change. New records of S. spencei augment previous finds in the Spence Shale. S. willoughbyi n. sp. occurs in the Marjum Formation and Wheeler Formation. It differs from the type species S. columbia in details of tube size and degree of tapering, although the poorly known soft parts appear to be broadly similar. These occurrences extend significantly the stratigraphie range of Selkirkia, and are augmented by the discovery of Selkirkia sp. in the Wheeler Formation. A unique specimen of the possible annelid worm Palaeoscolex, P. cf. P. ratcliffei, is described from the Middle Cambrian of Spain, thereby extending the geographic range from previously known occurrences in England, Utah, and South Australia. Papillate ornamentation of various species of Palaeoscolex is compared, and the new class Palaeoscolecida is erected. These descrip- tions of soft-bodied organisms provide further information on the diversity of Cambrian life.

Peng1 Fossils of the sponge Angulosuspongia sinensis from calcareous mudstones of the middle and upper part of the Kaili Formation (Cambrian Stage 5) in the Jianhe area of Guizhou province, South China, exhibit an apparently reticulate pattern, characteristic of the Vauxiidae. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry (EDS) and Raman spectroscopy analysis indicate the presence of silica in the skeletal elements of these fossils, suggesting that this taxon possessed a skeleton comprised of spicules. This is the first confirmation of siliceous skeletal elements in fossils of the family Vauxiidae, and it lends support to the hypothesis that some early demosponges possessed biomineralized siliceous skeletons, which were subsequently lost and replaced by spongin later in the evolutionary history of this lineage. The new materials provide critical insight into the phylogeny and evolution of biomineralization in the Demosopongiae. The earliest stages of animal evolution remain highly unclear1. Recent studies of molecular genetics suggest that sponges lay near the base of the animal phylogenetic tree2–4. Whether the sponges are monophyletic or polyphyl- etic is subject to interpretation2. Based on aspects of cellular structure and chemistry, some workers have favored the possibility that sponges have multiple origins from two or three different single-celled ancestors5,6. Sponges certainly have a deep evolutionary history7. Articulated body fossils and isolated spicules have been reported from the Ediacaran8–12 and the earliest Cambrian13–16.

Workers using many different techniques including mass spectrometry, X-ray, electron microscopy and optical spectroscopic techniques, have attempted to verify proteinaceous or other biochemicals that appear endogenous to fossils found throughout the geologic column. This paper presents a review of the relevant literature published over the last 50 years. A comparative survey of the reported techniques used is also given. Morphological and molecular investigations show that original biochemistry is geologically extensive, geographically global, and taxonomically wide-ranging. The fossil limits of endogenous organics remain the subject of widespread and increasing research investigation. Hagadorn he middle cambrian burgess shale is one of the world’s best-known and best-studied fossil deposits. The story of Tthe discovery of its fauna is a famous part of paleontological lore. While searching in 1909 for trilobites in the Burgess Shale Formation of the Canadian Rockies, Charles Walcott discovered a remarkable “phyl- lopod crustacean” on a shale slab (Yochelson 1967). Further searching revealed a diverse suite of soft-bodied fossils that would later be described as algae, sponges, cnidarians, ctenophores, brachiopods, hyoliths, pria- pulids, annelids, onychophorans, arthropods, echinoderms, hemichor- dates, chordates, cirripeds, and a variety of problematica. Many of these fossils came from a single horizon, in a lens of shale 2 to 3 m thick, that Walcott called the Phyllopod (leaf-foot) Bed. Subsequent collecting at and near this site by research teams led by Walcott, P. E. Raymond, H. B. Whittington, and D. Collins has yielded over 75,000 soft-bodied fossils, most of which are housed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto. Although interest in the Burgess Shale fauna has waxed and waned since its discovery, its importance has inspired work on other Lagerstät- ten and helped galvanize the paleontological community’s attention on soft-bodied deposits in general.
