2018 CONFERENCE USA (in alpha order) CUSA is at tier two, meaning there are no individual team sheets and no game by game rush data or rush stat plays tabulated. CSUA EAST Charlotte Each year I “publish” my bottom five coach report. Brad Lambert made the list last year and proceeded to “lead” his team to one win! Blame the staff? Lambert cleaned house, firing both coordinators and firing and demoting other assistants. 18 starters return. Lose again and it will be clear where the next change will occur. AREAS TO WATCH: Charlotte loses just two WR’s, a center and one LB from the ’17 starting lineup. This will be a heavily veteran team. Their QB hit 47.7% last year. In 7-12 games the point O was 14 or less. I like the lead RB. The new offensive coordinator was productive at Youngstown St. Charlotte intercepted just two passes in ’17! With ten returning starters this will change. They have 25 defensive sacks in their last 24 games. The run D was below average and the pass D was over 69%. They’ll improve, but to what extent. Glenn Spencer was decent as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma St. This seems like a splash hire. All three kickers return but they combined to go 4-13 last year. ‘18 PREVIEW: Last year in this spot I said to post check their stats vs. Eastern Michigan. The stats were not pretty. Let’s hope they improve with this depth opening up vs. 4-7 Fordham. Games 2-4 are hosting App. -
Mega Conferences
Non-revenue sports Football, of course, provides the impetus for any conference realignment. In men's basketball, coaches will lose the built-in recruiting tool of playing near home during conference play and then at Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament. But what about the rest of the sports? Here's a look at the potential Missouri Pittsburgh Syracuse Nebraska Ohio State Northwestern Minnesota Michigan St. Wisconsin Purdue State Penn Michigan Iowa Indiana Illinois future of the non-revenue sports at Rutgers if it joins the Big Ten: BASEBALL Now: Under longtime head coach Fred Hill Sr., the Scarlet Knights made the Rutgers NCAA Tournament four times last decade. The Big East Conference’s national clout was hurt by the defection of Miami in 2004. The last conference team to make the College World Series was Louisville in 2007. After: Rutgers could emerge as the class of the conference. You find the best baseball either down South or out West. The power conferences are the ACC, Pac-10 and SEC. A Big Ten team has not made the CWS since Michigan in 1984. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Now: At the Big East championships in October, Rutgers finished 12th out of 14 teams. Syracuse won the Big East title and finished 14th at nationals. Four other Big East schools made the Top 25. After: The conferences are similar. Wisconsin won the conference title and took seventh at nationals. Two other schools made the Top 25. MEN’S GOLF Now: The Scarlet Knights have made the NCAA Tournament twice since 1983. -

Using Contract Law to Tackle the Coaching Carousel By STEPHEN F. Ross & LINDSAY BERKSTRESSER* Introduction STUDENT-ATHLETES who demonstrate the skills and dedication throughout their college careers that predict success in professional sports become attractive prospects for major league drafts. Yet their professional aspirations can be significantly affected by the departure of their college coaches, whose team's recurring success often results in lucrative offers from professional teams or wealthier and more suc- cessful college programs. Although the potential harm to a university left behind by an upwardly-mobile coach is often recognized, less at- tention has focused on the connection between a coach's departure from the university and the student-athlete's standing in the National Football League ("NFL") draft. A recent study has demonstrated that a coach's decision to leave a university can substantially lower an ath- lete's position in the draft.' Each year, a large number of football programs face coaching changes;2 indeed, a top school's hiring away a coach from another program often has a ripple effect-a "coaching carousel."3 Student- * Professor of Law and Director, Institute for Sports Law, Policy and Research, The Pennsylvania State University, andJ.D. -
