Rivers ii ABSTRACT This dissertation was centered on how the theory ‘turning points’ explained African American coaches ascension to Head Football Coach at a NCAA Division I FBS school. This work (1) identified traits and characteristics coaches felt they needed in order to become a head coach and (2) described the significant events and people (turning points) in their lives that have influenced their career. This study employed a Constant Comparative method in which participants answered interview questions designed for them to elaborate on their educational and athletic careers, and those events and people who were major influences in their careers. Commonalities and discords from participant responses resulted in the discovery of five major themes. The themes identified were: Faith, Family, Graduation from college and participation in sport, Joining professional associations, and Previous coaches/administrators worked for/under. The identification and explanation of specific turning points suggest a blueprint for African American assistant coaches aspiring to become a head coach while also providing opportunities for current athletic administrators to increase their attempts at expanding their own networks to include more African Americans as strong candidates for potential open positions for Head Football Coach. iii I dedicate this project to my late mother Rosa Ann Condry Rivers. That loyalty kept me going a many a night when I wanted to quit. You often told others and myself in my cohort “a good dissertation is a done dissertation”. I always thought that statement applied to everyone but me. From the inception of vi this program, you inspired me to be better, and encouraged me to continue to be different. Being different led to the creation and completion of this document. A good dissertation may be a done dissertation. But a great dissertation is one that the author can relate to. A great dissertation is one that the author can put himself into the situations and scenarios that his subjects are in. Design: Retrospective analysis. Methods: Workload and injury data was recorded from 52 players during a full NCAA football season. Acute, chronic, and a range of acute:chronic workload ratios (ACWR: 7:14, 7:21 and 7:28 day) calculated using rolling and exponentially weighted moving averages (EWMA) were plotted against non-contact injuries (regardless of time lost or not) sustained within 3- and 7-days. Injury risks were also determined relative to position and experience. Results: 105 non-contact injuries (18 game- and 87 training-related) were observed with almost 40% sustained during the pre-season. 7-21 day EWMA ACWR's with a 3-day injury lag were most closely associated with injury (R2 = 0.54).

    2008 Florida Football Post-Game Notes Florida vs. South Carolina November 15, 2008 This was the fifth straight game Florida scored 42 points or more, which matched the second-longest streak in school history (1996 and 2001). It is also tied with Oklahoma for the longest active streak in the country. Head Coach Urban Meyer is now 16-5 all-time against ranked opponents, 14-5 at Florida. He has led the Gators to wins over eight of the last 10 ranked opponents and 13 of the last 16. UF did not lose to an SEC East team this year and has gone undefeated against division teams 10 times in school history. USC remained unable to notch a win in Gainesville, as it is now 0-12 all-time. Florida increased its series lead to 22-4-3 overall and has claimed 16 of the last 17 meetings. Steve Spurrier is 1-3 against his former team and has lost the last three consecutive meetings. Prior to today’s game, the most points the Gamecocks had allowed in 2008 were 24 and were allowing only 15.6 points per game. The Gators scored 28 points with a little over 11 minutes to play in the first half. USC was ranked third in the nation in total defense, allowing only 256.5 yards per game.
