COLLEGE HIGHER A GUIDE FOR STAFF

College Higher Education in London e- prospectus Introduction

PURPOSE OF THIS GUIDE

London is very different from the rest of the country in terms of its HE offer. Over 40 universities are based in London, the majority of alternative HE providers are based here and an ever increasing number of universities in other parts of the country have satellite campuses within the M25. are therefore competing in a crowded market when trying to attract HE learners. There are just shy of thirty further education colleges offering HE in London and they vary greatly in terms of size, student numbers and in their curriculum offer.

While college HE marketing budgets are dwarfed by those in the university sector, more could be done to raise this often-overlooked higher level learning options with prospective learners, with both current college learners on lower level courses as well as potential learners, including adults in the workplace. We think this guide, focusing on the London College HE offer, is a good starting point. It is intended to be used by staff for several purposes, including informing curriculum development and to aid staff, including careers advisers, when advising students on HE options.

We will continue to update the guide to reflect College's HE offer for future entries. This is the 3rd edition of this guide to date and applies to 2021/22 entry. Course information has been checked with the relevant college, and where this was not possible the information has been taken directly from the college website and UCAS.

BACKGROUND

Provision of higher-level qualifications in further education colleges (FECs) has a long history and the majority offer higher education (HE), although the volume of HE provision and the student numbers at FECs vary substantially. The Association of Colleges College (AOC) latest Key Facts 2021/22 reports that 162 colleges in are on the Office for Students (OfS) register providing undergraduate and postgraduate level courses, with 118,000 learners studying HE in a college.

Unlike HE delivered in universities, college HE is predominantly vocational and delivered at a sub-degree level, RQF levels 4-5. College HE delivers predominately foundation degrees, HNCs and HNDs, and are offered on both a part-time or full-time basis. Colleges also offer non- prescribed employer focussed qualifications at RQF level 4 and above, including professional awards provided by national awarding bodies such as the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX), as well as higher-level National Vocational Qualifications.

When looking at the college HE cohort, students studying HE in FE colleges are more likely to be older, to study part-time and to come from areas with low rates of participation in higher education than students attending universities. They are also likely to live locally. The average distance between home postcode and learning location for HE students attending a college is 17 miles, compared with 52 miles for those at university.

College HE provision then attracts a wider range of students than may be the case in most universities. These include ‘second chance’ students, those without a family history of higher education, and also adults in work and other part-time students. The target client group and the small cohorts and high levels of personal support usually found in colleges set it apart from university-based HE. In addition, college HE is competitively priced compared with most universities, which is another factor that will attract learners.

While a significant minority of learners study HE in a further education college (approximately one in ten) HE numbers have declined in recent times. There are a number of possible factors which include the decline in part-time and adult HE learners across the HE sector and the growth in alternative HE providers. The increase in university foundation courses, or year zeros, may also be impacting on college HE numbers.

Despite increasing competition for students in the sector, college HE has much to offer, including its vocational focus, links to employers and its locality, competitive pricing and smaller class sizes and contact time with staff.

The government’s renewed focus on FE with the skills for jobs white paper and subsequent skills and post-16 education bill, and the need for many adults to reskill or upskill, provides a real opportunity for college HE to thrive. We hope that this e-prospectus will act as a step in contributing to raising the awareness of college HE in London.

While every effort has been made to ensure the course information contained in this guide is correct at the time the information was obtained (summer 2020/21), we cannot guarantee its accuracy. This document has been designed to enable us to update it should you find any inaccuracies in terms of course offer at your institution.

For the very latest information on college’s HE offer we would always advise users to go on to individual college websites directly.
