Top Tier Initiative Action Item Report Pathway Goal: Community Partnerships Top Tier Initiative Action Item Report Pathway Goal: Community Partnerships Action Item # Report: 1-2 ☐ Mid-Year: December 2016 ☒ Year-End: April 2017 (Updated 7/20/17) Action Item Description: Work with businesses/organizations to expand internships. Submitted By: Name Department Sue DiBella Office of Community Engagement Working Group Members: Name Department Raelynn Frazier Career Services John Osborn on behalf of Deans Lee Business School Caleen Johnson UNLV Foundation Provide a written overview of the year-long process for your working group. The group addressing this action item is working to better define internships and develop a process to track them on an institutional level. They are examining ways to obtain such metrics/milestones as number of courses and list of courses providing internships, tracked by Career Services, reported by 1-1- 17; define parameters of internships and explore processes to track number of existing internships, by college, reported annually; report on identification of process to track internships and make recommendations to expand them, produced by 7-1-17; recommendations for a pilot program for internships for under-represented students coordinated with Chambers of Commerce, produced by the Lee Business School, by 7-1-17. 2016-17 Accomplishments The group identified some of the challenges associated with tracking internships: there are different departments on campus that manage internships independently, and definitions vary. Internships are managed through Career Services, academic departments, and through various other connections on campus. There does not appear to be one centralized location where employers interact with the campus to identify or create internship opportunities for UNLV students. Though the group recognizes that both employers and students seek a streamlined process for awarding internships, it recognizes that the university must also ensure an appropriate vetting of the employer and review the actual duties that are to CMP 1-2 2016-17 Year End Report (2) 1 of 2 7/27/2017 Top Tier Initiative Action Item Report be accomplished to safeguard student interests and to ensure that they meet requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). They must also be in alignment with the academic goals and needs of the student and the department. Career Services has compiled a list of internship courses offered at the undergraduate level based on the Undergraduate Catalog; this list is still being vetted for accuracy and updated with current information. Career Services has also assigned staff to assist with tracking and management of internships. Career Services can also provide the number of internship postings offered through Hire A Rebel based on a specific time frame. Additional accomplishments will be provided in the July 2017 report. Recommendations In order to fully understand how many of our students engage in internships, how many employers offer internships, and how many majors require or offer internships, there appears to be a need for a central repository where this information can be submitted, compiled, and distributed back out to campus. Developing metrics for measuring internships other than “yes/no” or “engage in internships/do not engage in internships” may prove to be more challenging than realized, but will be critical for campus reporting. 2017-18 Next steps • What should the goals / activities be for the subcommittee? • Who should be responsible? Moving forward, the subcommittee will hold focus groups with the constituents who offer internships on campus to further identify common areas that can be aligned and measured more centrally. The current subcommittee would be responsible for this initiative (Raelynn Frazier, John Osborn, and Caleen Johnson.) Please review the list below and “X” the appropriate box(es). ☐ Potential resources required ☒ Any reports generated by this working group ☐ Metrics to be used ☐ No additional reference material Any additional information you wish to share. Steve Rowland Actor, Singer, Columnist, Recording Producer, Author Born in Hollywood, actor, singer, columnist, author and record producer Steve Rowland grew up in Beverly Hills during the Golden Age of Hollywood. His father was film director Roy Rowland, his mother Ruth was a scriptwriter and the niece of Louis B. Mayer of MGM fame. Steve almost "naturally" began an acting career in the 50s, starring in over 35 TV shows like “Bonanza”, “Wanted Dead Or Alive” and a two year role in “The Legend of Wyatt Earp”. His first film appearance was at 11 year's old in MGM's "Boy's Ranch", singing Darling Clementine in the campfire scene. Film appearances included co-starring roles in “The Battle of the Bulge” with Henry Fonda and Telly Savalas, “Gun Glory” with Stuart Granger and Rhonda Fleming, “Crime in the Streets” with John Cassavetes and Sal Mineo, and the original “The Thin Red Line” with Keir Dullea and Jack Warden. These were also the years when as a member of "Hollywood royalty" Steve was inspired to write monthly columns for the popular fan magazines, The View From Rowland’s Head being the most famous, as he mingled with the stars and starlets of the time : Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Natalie Wood, Tuesday Weld, Kathy Case, Carmen Phillips to name a few. And with his all-time friend Budd Albright, he hit the music scene with the group "West Coast Twist Kings", and with Earl Bostic he performed in the "Ringleaders". The lure of ‘the swinging sixties’ soon brought Steve to London where he produced records for the Fontana label.

Steve Burke Chief Executive Officer NBCUniversal 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 Jeff Shell Incoming Chief Executive Officer NBC Universal 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 December 17th, 2019 Dear Mr. Burke and Mr. Shell, We write as members of the New York State Legislature to express our concern about allegations of a toxic workplace environment at NBCUniversal. There is growing evidence of a culture that silences victims of harassment and those who report inappropriate workplace behavior at NBC. NBCUniversal’s recent decision not to renew Gabrielle Union’s contract on America’s Got Talent is just the latest example of a concerning pattern of behavior on the part of NBC. Union was allegedly let go after raising concerns about racist jokes made on set and having been told repeatedly that her hairstyles were “too black.” These allegations represent unacceptable workplace behavior that no one should be subject to, let alone terminated for reporting. We are grateful that NBC has committed to Union that they will investigate her allegations and termination. However, NBC must be transparent about the findings of their investigation and take concrete steps to reform the toxic culture throughout the company. Union’s experience is only one example of the systemic silencing of victims of harassment and those who have spoken up at NBC. As reported extensively by Ronan Farrow and others, NBC ignored complaints of sexual misconduct against Matt Lauer and stymied Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein while at NBC. Farrow has also reported that at least seven women have signed non-disclosure agreements with the company after alleging sexual harassment, including individuals who made complaints about Lauer before November 2017.
