Kimi Andrew News Editor The recently-released Campus Climate Survey indicates an overall positive attitude toward Santa Clara, but the more detailed questions about experiences with offensive and hostile conduct show areas for concern. 25 percent of survey respondents said they had personally experienced exclusionary con- duct described above, and of that percentage, 38 percent said the conduct was based on their ethnicity. INTRODUCTION The period of 1994 through 2002 has been called a myriad of things by commentators, fans, baseball personnel and players when referring to this time period in baseball history. Unfortunately, not many of the names used or applied are complimentary, at least by those who are not part of the Major League Baseball (MLB) hierarchy. Names such as "Baseball's Watergate" or "Selig's Watergate,"' the "Tainted Era,"2 the "Non-Drug Testing Era," the "*ERA" or simply the "Steroids Era"3 have been suggested. Conversely, MLB commissioner Bud Selig has called this period a "renaissance" for baseball and "baseball's Golden Age." 4 As can be seen by these few examples of opinions about the subject time period, a wide gap exists in the perceptions of those who have expressed opinions on the subject.

This dissertation explores what I call the Black Twitter Turn as a pivot away from what I term selfsploitation as its primary identifiable cultural currency. The Black Twitter Turn has transformed Twitter into a place to pushback and challenge dominant white racial frames rooted in white supremacy. It also serves as a site for making Black voices and concerns audible and unavoidable as both a community and as a media force. WHEN THE NCAA STRIKES, WHO IS CALLED OUT? INTRODUCTION On September 20, 2010, Reggie Bush, a professional football player for the New Orleans Saints, broke his right fibula during a game against the San Francisco 49ers.1 A doctor determined that Bush's injury would prevent him from competing for four to six weeks during the 2010-2011 National Football League (NFL) season. 2 Some fans called the injury unfortunate; others called it karma. 3 In the summer of 2010, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) penalized Bush's alma mater, the University of Southern California (USC), 4 after the NCAA completed a four-year investiga- tion into NCAA violations committed by Bush.5 The NCAA's inves- tigation revealed that Bush and his family received improper benefits from a sports agent while he was competing as a student-athlete for USC. 6 These actions violated the NCAA's Amateurism legislation,7 which prohibits any student-athlete from accepting transportation or other benefits from an athlete agent while competing as a collegiate athlete.8 As a result, the NCAA penalized USC in 2010.9 The USC 1.

COURSE DESCRIPTION Recent protests by athletes during professional and amateur sporting events are the latest chapters in a long history of political activism emanating from sports. This course examines a broad range of sporting sites—from public protests by athletes to debates about sports mascots to recreational and amateur sports leagues—to explore themes of political formation, domination, and resistance in the United States. It considers the ways that athletes, political groups and social movements have made use of amateur and professional sports to shape particular visions of rights, freedom, and democracy. The course engages frameworks from across the humanities and social sciences, including Black Studies, critical race theory, cultural studies, women of color feminism, and critical sports studies. No background in sports or scholarship on sports is assumed or required. Pending the resumption of amateur and professional sporting leagues in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the course will also take a field trip to a women’s professional basketball (WNBA) game and students will attend at least one other amateur sporting event to produce a short ethnographic paper. The objectives of this course are: • To familiarize students with some of the important themes, debates and arguments central to the study of race, gender and sports in the United States during the last 100 years. • To think engage with a series of important concepts related to the critical study of race and gender, especially freedom, populism, indigeneity, nationalism, colorblindness, and power.
