We see four major reasons why Chicago should not be awarded the Games. (1) Lack of Finances. Our nation, state, county and city are broke and running massive deficits. There's no way to guarantee that we will have the many billions needed to complete the work needed. Chicago is famous for going way over budget on any large construction project it tackles. (2) Lack of Competence. Our state, county and city are notoriously corrupt and populated with incompetent officials who line their pockets and make choices based not on effectiveness or the public good, but rather on how much money . can be made by friends and family members. This directly translates into bloated construction projects that go massively over budget and suffer repeated delays. (Block 37 is a project that is 30 years old and still incomplete, Millennium Park was just four years late). Also, there are a number of very high-ranking corruption investigations under way and our former Governor faces trial in 2010. It's entirely possible that many of the Chicago officials the 10C has been working with may be under investigation. (3) Lack of Infrastructure. Our city is falling to pieces around us.

Chapel Hill 2019 Approved by: Claude Clegg William Sturkey Katherine Turk © 2019 Alexandra Odom ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Alexandra Odom: Depictions of Black Love in Ebony Magazine (Under the direction of Claude Clegg) The ten years between 1979 and 1989 signaled a significant shift in the discourse about the "crisis of the black family", and proposed solutions to this crisis. Public discourse aimed at finding a solution to this “crisis” resulted in wide-ranging criticism of black family dynamics. Throughout the decade, the increased number of features about dating to marry, maintaining a successful marriage, and advertisements that showcased middle class black family life work to highlight Ebony's message that black romantic love was the key to the success of the black community. Ebony’s emphasis on the importance of black heteronormative romantic love often ignored the larger structural forces that contributed to the famed "crisis". As historians have dedicated increased attention to the study of black marriages and the black family in recent years, studies of popular depictions of black love in print media are a valuable addition to these growing conversations. iii To my parents. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION: Black Love as a Major Concern in Black Popular Discourse ........................ 1 Mainstream Discourse About the Black Family in the Twentieth Century ................................

This is all about celebrating Funk, Soul and R&B Music. 1970s and 1980s style. So, get down. Get funky. Get loose! Oh! This show is loosely imagined as if the characters of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream were to assemble as various Funk/Soul bands. Do you need to read or know that play? Not really. But hopefully some of you will find the subtle hints charming. WHAT YOU WILL NEED • THE INTERNET. Some of you may not know who the artists referenced in this play are and that’s okay. Part of the hope here is that you go down a rabbit hole of funk, soul and R&B classics and have a good time doing it. For others, it will be a trip down Memory Lane. Look up what you don’t know and fill in the rest. Trust me, your playlists are about to get better! • DRESS THE PART. Everyone should dress as foxy or as fly as they can. Lots of feathers and sequins if possible. • NOISE MAKERS. Bands of this era had a bass, drums/high hat, a synthesizer (optional) and, of course, a solid horns section.
