American Soul Creative Marketing Concepts 10.24.18 American Soul AMERICAN SOUL CREATIVE MARKETING CONCEPTS 10.24.18 AMERICAN SOUL ABOUT THE SHOW American Soul is the story about the struggle to make the dream of Soul Train come true. Set in the early 70’s, filled with music, dance, fashion and glamour, this is the untold story of the launch of the first nationally syndicated Black music show and what happened when the music stops. Battles with record labels for top talent, off-camera drama as young dancers vie for the spotlight, stand in the way of a 30-something Don Cornelius who is sacrificing all that he loves to follow his dream. The journeys of these characters collide in a racially charged LA with the odds stacked against them. All they have is each other and the magic of Soul Train. 2 AMERICAN SOUL AMERICAN SOUL AMERICAN SOUL AMERICAN SOUL THEAMERICAN CAST SOUL AMERICAN SOUL THE CAST AND CHARACTERSTE CAST TEST CAT AN CAACTERS TE CAST TES DON1.) Everybody is Talking About the Good Ole Days: RZA on the Soul of Music by Ericka Blount Danois If hip-hop tours, white appropriation, anniversary celebrations, books and hip-hop documentaries aren’t an indication that hip-hop has reached the status of Beatles-style nostalgia and reverence, then releasing a Wu-Tang Clan 20th anniversary reunion album, A BetterTomorrow, is solid proof that the genre has officially arrived. RZA, always the heart of the operation, worked tirelessly to round up the troops and dissolve beefs for the reunion album that dropped Dec. 2, 2014. “I wanted to make a record that pays homage to soul music and hip-hop,” he said about the making of this album. “I went to the past to make something for the future.” RZA came out of his own pockets to fund the album to the tune of half a million dollars. Some of the best in the industry are featured on the album—Rick Rubin, Adrian Younge, David Porter, Kenny Gamble and Rob Cavallo, all had their hands in the pot. Wu-Tang has always done things big and with vision. RZA led the 9-member group to an unprecedented label deal where each member was able to launch solo records. The deal allowed them to become the most revolutionary rap group of the mid-’90s releasing five group and 19 compilation albums totaling over 6 platinum records and over 40 million sold.

This is all about celebrating Funk, Soul and R&B Music. 1970s and 1980s style. So, get down. Get funky. Get loose! Oh! This show is loosely imagined as if the characters of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream were to assemble as various Funk/Soul bands. Do you need to read or know that play? Not really. But hopefully some of you will find the subtle hints charming. WHAT YOU WILL NEED • THE INTERNET. Some of you may not know who the artists referenced in this play are and that’s okay. Part of the hope here is that you go down a rabbit hole of funk, soul and R&B classics and have a good time doing it. For others, it will be a trip down Memory Lane. Look up what you don’t know and fill in the rest. Trust me, your playlists are about to get better! • DRESS THE PART. Everyone should dress as foxy or as fly as they can. Lots of feathers and sequins if possible. • NOISE MAKERS. Bands of this era had a bass, drums/high hat, a synthesizer (optional) and, of course, a solid horns section.
