Matching funds. Some long-time friends of the ministry have given a generous $5,000 challenge grant. They have agreed to match every dollar raised by this appeal, up until we match their $5,000. You’ll want to take advantage of this, because here’s what it means for you: * If you give $100, it can double to $200 to support Orthodox Missions. * Your gift of $200 can turn into $400. * Or if you can give $500, it can become $1,000! Any amount you can give will do so much to build our Church! I urge you to give right away to make sure you double your impact. That $5,000 will be reached quickly. You will help spread the Orthodox Faith. That’s exactly what Christ told you and me to do! Your donation will start and support vital ministries where churches are growing. You’ll help spiritually hungry people find the blessings of Orthodoxy.

THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS by Hüsamettin ŞİMŞİR Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Sabancı University June 2018 © Hüsamettin Şimşir 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS Hüsamettin Şimşir M.A Thesis, June 2018 Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Fac. Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period.

  • ELDER PAISIOS an OBSTACLE for THOSE BENT on DESTROYING OUR LAND and ITS CIVILIZATION by Leontios Monahos Dionysiates
ELDER PAISIOS AN OBSTACLE FOR THOSE BENT ON DESTROYING OUR LAND AND ITS CIVILIZATION by Leontios Monahos Dionysiates 01. An occasion for remembering the Elder’s contribution. The occasion arises from the slanderous statements written against Elder Paisios by a miserable individual on Facebook, which was followed by support from individuals even more miserable. From the news: “The 27 year old, according to the official announcement, was the administrator of a page on Facebook which contained blasphemous and defaming content against Elder Paisios and Orthodox Christianity. Regarding the defaming and blasphemous content of that particular page, the Electronic Crimes Prosecution electronically received thousands of complaints by residents from all over the world.” Despite the post’s disgusting content, some people, in various places on the Internet, supportively wrote against the page’s removal… regarding the action as an affront to their “freedoms”… They most likely mean their “freedom” to defame rather than to argue. This is foreign not only to Christian thought but also to that of the ancient Greek philosophers, who were distinguished not because they insulted like uncivilized barbarians but because they were able to think and reason… This occurrence is not unique. Blasphemous works are displayed before every Christmas and Pasha… And in Russia, a similar blasphemy was committed at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow, from the group “Pussy Riot” in February 2012… And there also came support from some "Twittering parrots" who are blatantly ignorant of the fact that blasphemy is not a means of political libel (against President Putin) and that the group in question was tried with due process of law.

  • January 24, 2021- Christ's Trial Before Caiaphus, St. Paisios and More
Iconography Adult Spiritual Enrichment January 24, 2021 CLASS 14 ST PAISIOS (JUNE 29 / JULY 12) On 25 July 1924, Arsenios Eznepidis was born in Pharasa (Çamlıca), Cappadocia, shortly before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Arsenios' name was given to him by St. Arsenios the Cappadocian, who baptised him, naming the child for himself and foretelling Arsenios' monastic future. After the exchange, the Eznepidis family settled in Konitsa, Epirus. Arsenios grew up there, and after intermediate public school, he learned carpentry. Also, as a child he had great love for Christ and the Panagia, and a great longing to become a monk. He would often leave for the forest in order to study and pray in silence. He took delight in the lives of the Saints, the contests of whom he struggled to imitate with zeal immeasurable and exactness astounding, cultivating in the process humility and love. During the civil war in Greece, Arsenios served as a radio operator (1945-1949). In combat operations, he was distinguished for his bravery, self-sacrifice, and moral righteousness. In 1950, having completed his service, he went to Mount Athos to become a monk: first to Father Kyril, the future abbot of Koutloumousiou monastery, and then to Esphigmenou Monastery (although he was not supportive of their later opposition to the Ecumenical Patriarchate). Arsenios, having been a novice for four years, was tonsured a Rassophore monk on 27 March 1954, and was given the name Averkios. Soon after, Father Averkios went to the idiorrhythmic brotherhood of Philotheou monastery, where his uncle was a monk.

The Epistle St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church NOVEMBER 22909 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River, Ohio 2012 Pastoral Thoughts by Fr. Jim Doukas Friday, Oct. 26, was such a memorable occasion. Not only did we honor our Patron Saint Demetrios, but also, the Mother of God our Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary. The hosting by our Holy Church of the “Hawaiian Myrrh-Streaming Iveron Icon of the Mother of Go,” truly was a magnificent event. I cannot forget seeing such piety and humbleness of the people that attended. Even before we opened the doors of the Church, people were present, including parents with their children before taking them late to school so that they could be blessed. Others came to be blessed before they went to work. Those who stayed, witnessed the Miracle of the Myrrh-Streaming Icon. The myrrh that flowed from this Icon, from the time that it entered the Church, until it left, brought out a smell of fragrant roses. I saw something that was so amazing from the people that venerated as well as those who were anointed from the many blessings of this Icon. I witnessed Honor, Piety and Holiness. Not only did people attend from the four Greek $50 Dance only tickets (after 9 p.m.) Orthodox Churches of Cleveland but also from all the Orthodox Jurisdictional Churches in the area including some who To make a donation, call Lia Augoustidis at 440-933-0500 travelled as far away as Dallas, Texas. I sensed and witnessed what is repeated in the “Great Litany” STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11 during the Divine Liturgy: “For this Holy House, and for those who enter with faith, reverence, and the fear of God, let Guest Speaker George Athanasiou us pray to the Lord.” I pray that we can always remember these beautiful words when we enter the Church and live our lives Growing up at Holy Trinity Church in with Honor, Piety and Holiness.

  • The Meaning of the Wall Paintings
SPACE AND IMAGE: THE MEANING OF THE WALL PAINTINGS AT THE HERMITAGE OF IOANNES by ALEV TURKER (Under the Direction of Asen Kirin) ABSTRACT Ayvali Church at Güllüdere Valley in Nevşehir, Turkey, is one of the structures that exemplify monastic life in Cappadocia. Carved into an isolated rock formation, the space is divided into two levels, with two chambers in the lower level and one second-story room. An opening in the floor of the upper room connects to the first floor’s north chamber. The lower level is extensively adorned with frescoes, the second phase (913-920) of which was commissioned by Ioannes (John), whereas the upper room shows no signs of painted decoration. A close examination of the wall paintings reveals that while the south chamber was used by the monk for personal prayer, the north chamber functioned as a funerary place. The architecture and the iconographic program of the wall paintings suggest that the structure functioned as a hermitage rather than a church.
