General Admission Ragtime Baseball in New Orleans by S. Derby Gisclair Member, Society for American Baseball Research Ragtime was a new, syncopated music style born in the saloons and “sporting houses” of New Orleans’ Storyville district, an area named after city councilman Sidney Story, who in 1898 authored the legislation establishing the district. It was bounded by Iberville, Basin, St. Louis, and Robertson streets. At the same time that ragtime was gaining popularity throughout the South, the parallel popularity of the city’s professional baseball club, the New Orleans Pelicans, was gaining momentum as well. During the post-Civil War years the center of the baseball world in the South was New Orleans. The city boasted fifteen teams that had joined the National Association, the largest contingent from any southern city. Among these was an amateur team formed in 1865 known as the Pelicans. The city’s first professional team in 1887 as part of the Southern League, the Pelicans became a more stable enterprise in the reconstituted Southern Association that began play in 1901. The early Southern Association operated in a period in baseball known as the Deadball Era, so called primarily because of the type of ball used, but also because of the style of play at the time. It was a game which employed the General Admission scientific method – today known as “small ball” – bunts, hit an run plays, and base stealing. Hitters would choke up on their heavy wooden bats and would try to punch or slash a hit over the infield. Baseball entered the mainstream of the American cultural landscape in the early 20th century and the game’s popularity soared due to increased coverage in newspapers and periodicals.

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: BASEBALL, CITIZENSHIP, AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN GEORGE W. BUSH’S AMERICA Ryan Edward King‐White, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor David L. Andrews Department of Kinesiology The four separate, but related, studies within this research project seek to offer a critical understanding for how American national identit(ies), and particular forms of (cultural) citizenship are discursively constructed and performed in and through the sport of baseball. More specifically, this dissertation will utilize and expand upon critical theories of neoliberalism, citizenship, whiteness, and (physical) cultural studies to engage various empirical sites, which help provide the context for everyday life in contemporary America. Each chapter looks at various empirical aspects of the Little League World Series and the fans of the Boston Red Sox (popularly referred to as Red Sox Nation) that have historically privileged particular performances and behaviors often associated with white, American, heterosexual, upper‐middle class, masculine subject‐positions. In the first instance this project also attempts to describe how ‘normalized’ American citizenship is being (re)shaped in and through the sport of baseball. Massachusetts Turnpike Boston Ramps and Bowker Overpass Study December 2015 Chapter 3—Existing Conditions: Bowker Overpass 3.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter describes the analysis of the Bowker Overpass sub-area of the Massachusetts Turnpike — Boston Ramps Study. As in Chapter 2, which discusses the larger study area, this section summarizes existing transportation conditions during a typical workday, emphasizing the peak-commuting hour. This section also reviews crash data and land use conditions. The Transit Data and Environmental Conditions provided in Chapter 2 apply to the Bowker Overpass sub-area of the study. 3.2 TRAFFIC CONDITIONS Developing a base knowledge of current traffic conditions fosters an understanding of where congestion occurs now and where it likely would occur in the future. The first step in calculating traffic congestion requires using current or recent turning- movement and traffic counts. Traffic counts were obtained along the Massachusetts Turnpike between the Allston Tolls and Ted Williams Tunnel, and at specific intersections throughout the study area. The volumes used in this analysis are presented in Section 3.2.1. Section 3.2.2 summarizes system performance. 3.2.1 Existing (2010) Traffic Volumes The Bowker Overpass delineates the Back Bay and Fenway/Kenmore neighborhoods, and runs roughly along the Muddy Brook between the Emerald Necklace/Back Bay Fens and the Charles River Esplanade. It connects Boylston Street and Fenway with Storrow Drive over the Massachusetts Turnpike, Commonwealth Avenue, and Beacon Street (Figure 3-1).
