In her Residential Harp Weeks, Workshops, Summer-schools and Teacher Training Courses, Janet Harbison continues to bring vitality, creativity, insight and inspiration to every generation and ability of player. What people say “Studying under Dr. Janet Harbison was a life-changing experience for me. Janet is a master of the Irish harp, and an expert teacher. Her guidance and support were instrumental in helping me establish myself as a professional musician and harp teacher. I would highly recommend Janet's apprenticeship program to anyone interested in further training.” Thea H, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada “I have just experienced four incredible weeks of total immersion harp studies. Honestly, I absolutely loved every minute of it and I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. I was exposed to wonderful stories of Irish history, amazing music, fabulous people, an incredible venue with excellent cuisine and your thoughtful curriculum complete with teachers on your team who are second to none. Thank you, Janet, and thanks to everyone for your contributions towards this magnificent learning experience. This album was produced for the 25th anniversary of the Belfast Harp Orchestra in November 2017 and is a remastered combination of the Harp Orchestra’s first two albums originally produced on Cassette in 1992 and 1993. Recorded in 2004 but not released until October 2017, this album of 23 slow airs is from the most profound and magical aspect of Irish traditional music. While the airs might seem slow, they are highly ornamented and expressive and many come from Jacobite times (end of the 17th century) as ‘aisling’ or ‘visionary songs’ that lamented the plight of Ireland and Irish culture. None were conceived as harp music originally, rather as songs but they represent the most challenging and beautiful music to be played. • Baroque Ensemble Program 12-6-18.Pdf
Our ensemble uses a set of baroque bows patterned after existing historic examples BYU – IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC PRESENTS from the early 18th century. These bows are lighter, shorter, and have a slight outward curve resulting in characteristic baroque articulation -- a strong, quick down bow and a light, softer up bow, meant to emphasize the inequalities of strong and weak beats. Basso continuo refers to the preferred harmonic accompaniment used during the baroque era. From a printed bass line with a few harmonic clues indicated as numerical “figures,” musicians improvised chordal accompaniments which best fit the unique qualities of their instruments and supported the upper solo lines -- similar to the way a modern jazz rhythm section will “comp” behind a vocal or saxophone solo. This single bass line might include a colorful variety of both melodic and chord playing instruments. Tonight’s basso continuo section includes: • Harpsichord, featuring plucked brass strings across a light wood frame, resulting in a delicate, transparent tone which contrasts with the strong iron frame and hammered tone of the modern piano • Baroque style organ, using a mechanical “tracker” mechanism instead of electronics to route air to each pipe This evening’s performance features suites, sinfonia and concerti by prominent composers from the 17th and early 18th century: § The prolific Antonio Vivaldi is known for his development of three- movement concerto form. An extravagant violinist, he carried the nickname “il prete roso” (the red priest) because of his red hair. § Johann Heinrich Schmelzer was recognized in his day as Vienna's foremost violin virtuoso and a leading composer.

Van Morrison & The Chieftains – Irish Heartbeat (Remastered) (1988/2020) [FLAC 24bit/96kHz] Van Morrison & The Chieftains – Irish Heartbeat (Remastered) (1988/2020) FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 38:56 minutes | 815 MB | Genre: Rock Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Legacy Recordings. “Irish Heartbeat”, a collaboration album with Van Morrison, was Van’s first attempt to reconcile his Celtic roots with his blues and soul music. It was also The Chieftains’ first full blown collaboration album. Although there were worries about working with a major rock star, the recording was a success, introducing elements of Van’s unique soul and jazz style singing to traditional songs and music. This was the beginning of an ongoing successful musical relationship between Van and The Chieftains. “Irish Heartbeat” was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989, and there followed a tour of Europe and the UK. “On their wide musical journeys in the ’80s, the Chieftains decided to collaborate with Van Morrison, who had an artistic peak at the end of the decade. The result was a highlight in both of their ’80s productions: the traditional Irish Heartbeat, with Morrison on lead vocals and a guest appearance from the Mary Black. Morrisonand Moloney’s production puts the vocals up front with a sparse background, sometimes with a backdrop of intertwining strings and flutes, the same way Morrison would later use the Chieftains on his Hymns to the Silence. The arrangement and the artist’s engaged singing leads to a brilliant result, and these Irish classics are made very accessible without being transformed into pop songs.

  • Battle of Clontarf by Finnegan
Clontarf We are in the year 1014, on the coast of Ireland. Brian Boru high king of the emerald isle awaits the battle that will either crush the rising rebellion, or mark his defeat. This battle will go down in history as the battle of Clontarf… A cool gust of wind buffeted from the sea, ruffling the lush green grass as it tore across the plain. His woolen cloak drawn closely around him, Aengus paced before the tents. Many faces were staring anxiously at the grey horizon as they went about sharpening swords, counting arrows and getting readying for the battle to come. In the distance a flicker could be observed at the base of the horizon. It grew to form a small group of riders who hustled across the plain as they saw the host by the Clontarf coast. Brian Boru rode at the center, his white beard tussled by the wind, the banner of his clan, the dal Cais, blowing behind him. In that that day no man in Ireland did not know of Brian Boru, and his name was uttered countless times. No man before had done what he had done. He alone ruled the south half of Ireland, having left the entire north to his former enemy Maél Sechnaill. Now with a rebellion from Leinster and Dublin on the rise, Brian was calling on this Sechnaill in hopes of gaining his support in the inevitable battle. Murchad appeared silently behind Aengus. “Dia dhuit?” he greeted. “Dia is Muire dhuit.” Aengus answered absently. “You think they bring good news?” “I hope, the Norse of Dublin are a force to be reckoned with- we need all the help we can get.” “Aye, but I’d rather that it weren’t from a snake like that Sechnaill.” Murchad had been something of a brother to Aengus for as long as either of them could remember.
