Today, 17 UWC schools on 4 continents offer an unique educational experience to students from over 155 nationalities. While four of the schools educate children and young people aged 2-19, most UWC schools focus on the 16-19 year old age group and teach the worldwide recognised International UWC ISAK JAPAN Japan Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Community services, creative activities and outdoor challenges play an integral part of UWC’s experiential approach to education. The vast majority of UWC IBDP students are residential students during their two- year UWC education. Living and learning together in an intercultural and diverse community is a core part of UWC's education for peace. A WORLDWIDE VOLUNTEER-RUN SYSTEM LOCALLY SELECTS STUDENTS UWC students are selected based on potential through UWC’s unique national committee system: a network of more than 3,000 dedicated volunteers who promote the UWC movement and identify, interview and select students in more than 155 countries. Through a wide range of strategic partnerships with governments, educational organisations, youth organisations, orphanages and refugee camps, UWC reaches a high proportion of students who would not otherwise have access to high quality academic programmes. Younger applicants to UWC schools also undergo selection at local level. AN EDUCATION INDEPENDENT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC MEANS UWC believes in deliberate diversity and the importance access to education being independent of a student’s socio-economic means. Therefore, selection for a place at a UWC school is independent of socio-economic means and over 65% of UWC students in the IBDP years receive either full or partial VOLUNTEERS financial assistance.
