The screenplay, written by Vaughn and Jane Goldmanis based on Dave Gibbons 's and Mark Millar 's comic book series of the same name. The film follows the recruitment and training of Gary "Eggsy" Unwin Taron Egertoninto a secret spy organisation. In a both brutal and comedic fashion, Eggsy joins a mission to tackle a global threat from Richmond Valentine Samuel L. Jacksona wealthy megalomaniac Kingsman: The Secret Service to deal with climate change. The film received generally positive reviews from critics who highly praised the stylised action sequences, the acting performances, villain, score, and its dark humourthough some violent and sexual scenes were critiqued as over-the-top. A sequel, titled Kingsman: The Golden Circlewas released in Septemberwith Vaughn and the main cast returning. During a mission in the Middle East inprobationary secret agent Lee Unwin sacrifices himself to protect his superior, Harry Hart. Hart, blaming himself, returns to London to give Lee's widow, Michelle, and her young son Gary "Eggsy" a medal engraved with an emergency assistance number. Seventeen Kingsman: The Secret Service later, Eggsy is a stereotypical chavhaving dropped out of training for the Royal Marines despite his intelligence and talents for both gymnastics and parkour. Hart arranges his release and explains that he is a member of Kingsman, a private intelligence service founded by British elite Kingsman: The Secret Service lost their heirs in World War I and put their money towards protecting the world; the organization is named for the tailor shop Kingsman: The Secret Service clothed them. Hart, code name "Galahad", explains there is a position available, as agent "Lancelot" was killed by the assassin Kingsman: The Secret Service while trying to rescue university professor James Arnold from kidnappers. Eggsy becomes Hart's candidate. Other candidates are eliminated through dangerous training tests run by Kingsman's technical support operative "Merlin", until only Eggsy and Roxy, a candidate Eggsy befriended, are left. Eggsy refuses to complete the final test—shooting a Pug puppy he raised during the training process, and Roxy is named the new "Lancelot". Merlin discovers that Professor Arnold is working as though nothing has happened. Hart attempts to interrogate him, but a microchip in Professor Arnold's neck explodes, killing him. The detonation signal is traced to a facility owned by Gazelle's employer Richmond Valentine, an Internet billionaire and philanthropist who has offered everyone in the world SIM cards that grant free cellular and Internet connectivity. Hart, impersonating a billionaire philanthropist, meets Valentine face-to-face. Hart learns of Valentine's connection to an obscure hate group 's church in Kentuckyand travels there, wearing glasses containing a video transceiver. As Eggsy watches, Valentine activates the SIM cards in the church, triggering a signal that causes the Kingsman: The Secret Service to become murderously violent. Hart's spy training leaves him as the only survivor. Outside the church Valentine explains what happened before shooting Hart in the face. Eggsy returns to Kingsman headquarters and finds that Chester "Arthur" King, Kingsman's leader, has a scar on his neck just like Professor Arnold's. King reveals that Valentine plans to transmit his "neurological wave" worldwide via satellite network, believing the resulting "culling" of most of the human race will avert its extinction via global warming. Only those Valentine has chosen will be unaffected. King tries to kill Eggsy with a poisoned drink, but Eggsy switches glasses Kingsman: The Secret Service King, who poisons himself. Eggsy, Merlin and Roxy set out Kingsman: The Secret Service stop Valentine. Roxy uses high-altitude balloons to destroy one of Valentine's satellites and break up the network, but Valentine secures a replacement. Merlin flies Eggsy to Valentine's base, where he masquerades as King. Eggsy is discovered by a failed Kingsman recruit, Kingsman: The Secret Service Hesketh, leading to both Eggsy and Merlin being cornered. On Eggsy's suggestion, Merlin activates Kingsman: The Secret Service implanted chips' failsafe, killing almost everyone with a chip. Valentine activates the signal, triggering worldwide pandemonium. Eggsy kills Gazelle and uses one of her sharpened prosthetic legs to impale Valentine and kill him, stopping the signal and ending the threat. Afterward, he shares a sexual encounter with Tilde, Crown Princess of Sweden, who was abducted by Valentine. In a mid-credits cutscene, Eggsy, now the new "Galahad", offers his mother and half-sister a new home away from his abusive stepfather, who is knocked unconscious in the same way that Harry earlier knocked out a Kingsman: The Secret Service. Fiona Hampton played Amelia, a Kingsman employee who masquerades as a candidate in order to "die" during the first test. The project originated when Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn were at a bar discussing spy movies, lamenting that the genre had become too serious over the years Kingsman: The Secret Service deciding to do "a fun one. The collaboration is the first of its kind, making Kingsman: The Secret Service the first film from which customers can buy all of the outfits they see.

    Aalborg Universitet Anna Kathrine Krarup Master’s Thesis Bent Sørensen June 2nd, 2020 Krarup 1 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to investigate the film Kingsman: The Secret Service in relation to the spy film genre as a whole and its cultural context of 21st century Britain. The reasoning for this being an interest in how the film marries an older and well-established genre with the social dynamics of contemporary Britain in order to create its own new film – what parts of its genre traits it keeps, and which traits it discards, and how it combines this with modern social dynamics. The interest is how the film relates to its genre and cultural context, whether it is pushing against social constructions in 21st century Britain or further cementing them. In this thesis, the film is firstly analysed in terms of genre with the goal being to assess whether the film is a parody of the spy film genre or a pastiche thereof. The film’s initial release material is studied for genre traits and other indicators such as the use of para-texts. This is done in order to understand what expectations the film is trying to build in terms of genre. The film’s comic book source material is also brought into this genre analysis, and the similarities and differences are discussed in regards to what the film has kept, and what it has changed from its source text, and in turn what this means in regards to take on the genre and its cultural context. After the analysis of the film’s approach to its genre, where it is determined that it is a humoristic pastiche, the focus of the analysis is shifted to the topic of the two types of Britain the film is portraying.

While commercial success is not always consistent from one decade to the next it is clear that the medium has been and will continue to be a cultural staple in the society of the United States. I have selected this type of popular culture for analysis precisely because of the longevity of the medium and the recent commercial success of film and television adaptations of comic book material. In this project I apply a Critical lens to selected comic book materials and apply Critical theories related to race, class, and gender in order to understand how the materials function as vehicles for ideological messages. For the project I selected five Marvel comic book characters and examined materials featuring those characters in the form of comic books, film, and television adaptations. The selected characters are Steve Rogers/Captain America, Luke Cage, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Jean Grey, and Raven Darkholme/Mystique. Methodologically I interrogated the selected texts through the application of visual and narrative rhetorical criticism.

    How to Make Comics the Successful Way An Investigation into the Strategies for Successful Comics Creators by William Hill Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the Degree of MA by Research 2021 Abstract Success is chiefly viewed as a destination point, often containing no clear direction as to how to arrive, or assurances of when one’s arrival has taken place. House this delicate theme of success amongst the vast genre of comics books and several questions occur: “What is success?” “Who has previously been successful?” “How did they gain success?” “What are the proven routes to success?” This study explores the different methods to find success within the comics industry, these methods included classical approaches such as periodical comics and newspaper strips as well as the more contemporary avenues such as self-publishing & web-comics. To gain a solid understanding and context of the commercial aspect of the business, first the study reviews the history of the comics industry. This is followed by an analysis of the definition and essential components of the comic book, to achieve a better understanding of the structure and classification of comics and, therefore, their intrinsic value as a product. The rise of the digital revolution, recent developments in technologies and web2.0 have not only contributed to expanding areas of production, distribution and fandom recognition, but also to implement innovative ideas and projects. This has led to the expansion of both profitable potentials and perilous pitfalls. To analyse the implications of these new means of creation and distribution, themes such as Communities, Pitfalls of the Internet Age and Crowdfunding have been explored.
