Who is Jesus? Where did he come from? How did he get here? Who does he save? How does he save? From what does he save? When does he save? All these questions and more will be answered in your Bible and that’s why you need this study. 1. A. We are going through 70 names (this # becomes more important as we move through the Bible). We will set the stage for the rest of Genesis etc. Sons were born to them after the flood. From these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations (We will talk about this some in Chapter 11). Europe, parts of Asia… B. Madai - Medes who are now the Kurds. They merged with the Persians (Cyrus, Darius) of old. But these people have no country of their own now. Tarshish - Spain (or possibly British Isles). Jonah was going here like ‘taking a slow boat to China.’ Remember Paul wanted to go here before he finished his ministry. 2. The sons of Ham (Ev. Africa): Cush (South Africa, Ethiopia, etc.), Egypt (Mizriam), Put (Northwest Africa), and Canaan (Canaan Land). 3. Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first (?) on earth to be a mighty man (Gibor, giant). 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” The beginning of Nimrod’s kingdom was Babel (Gate of God, confusion), Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. >>> From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh. Nimrod means rebel! Notice Babel. Shinar. Assyria. Nineveh. >>> Nimrod hunted men (OWG). He was the first world dictator. Babylon is juxtaposed against Jerusalem throughout the Bible. Nimrod means rebel. Coming antichrist is possibly the second Nimrod. >>>Notice Assyria and Babylon<<< 4. Egypt >> (Mizraim) fathered >> Pathrusim, Casluhim (from whom the Philistines came), and Caphtorim (Cyprus). Philistines came from Cyprus and from Egypt. When the Romans got fed up trying to administer Judea, in about 140 AD. So they concluded that Jewish presence was something that had to be voided. So they leveled the city and named the whole region after the Philistines. Palestine. It is a name used to deny Israel’s rights to the land. This also means they were not the sons of Ishmael. So not children of Abraham. Wow! This opens a can of worms… 5. Canaan fathered Sidon - Phoenicians. Seafaring people. Heth - Hittites Jebusites - Jerusalem. Remember Goliath’s skull and David’s taunt. Amorites - Some of the giants that were in need of vanquishing. Afterward the clans of the Canaanites dispersed. 19 And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah These are the sons of Ham, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations. 6. To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born. A. Shem, Arpachshad, Shelah, Eber. 25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided: The continental drift likely happened during the flood. Imagine. But the continents were still connected by land until the oceans rose and covered part of those remaining bridges leaving only island chains. For example take a look at the Aleutian Islands. B. 31 These are the sons of Shem, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations. 32 These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood. C. Note that the Messianic line came through Peleg….ultimately Nahor and then Abraham which we will pick up in chapter 12. 7. Since the earth was divided in the days of Peleg we can also assume that a greater explanation of this will come in Chapter 11..
