    History of the St George District Athletic Club Compiled by Michael Gentle Dennis Jolliffe Life Member Dennis Jolliffe joined the St George District Amateur Athletic Club in April 1951 as a 13 year old. With 63 years as a member, Dennis still competes in cross country races at Scarborough Park on most Saturday afternoons during winter. Throughout this time he has also worked tirelessly behind the scenes, performing many official duties for the benefit of all athletes. Dennis’ official positions within the Club include: • Executive Committee 1964-2013 • Hon. Treasurer 1964-2013 • Senior Vice President 1996-2013 • Vice President 1974-1978; 1984-1995 • Hon. Distance Race Secretary 1955-1959 • Assistant Distance Secretary 1984-1985 • Distance Selector 1985-2010 • Distance Handicapper 1985-2008 • Timekeeper 1991-2013 • Starter 2005-2010 • Distance Judge 1958-1961 • Track Captain 1962-1965 • Track Vice Captain 1956-1961 • Track Selector 1964-1965 • Social Committee 1957-1965 • Costume Steward 1960-1962 • Delegate to Interclub Board 1965 Dennis competed in the 1951 Cross Country Season and was awarded the trophy for the most improved Juvenile (under 15). In the same year he started track and field at Hurstville Oval, and in 1952 competed in the Under 16 competition at the cinders track at Sydney Athletic Field. He continued competing in the winter and summer competitions over the next few years, and when he turned 16 competed immediately in A grade in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. In the Sub Junior (under 17) cross country one mile State Championships at Carlingford he was placed third. At 18 he decided to concentrate on jumps instead of cross country running, but continued to be associated with the winter competition by acting as race secretary for a number of years.

Vedlejším cílem je sledování vlivu různých činitelů, které výkon ovlivňují. Metody: V práci byla pouţita metoda analýzy a metoda komparace. Analýza vývoje výkonnosti v trojskoku muţů vycházela ze sledování vývoje světového rekordu v letech 1911 – 2011. Komparace výkonnosti pak z výkonů medailistů na novodobých LOH konaných v letech 1896 – 2008, MS v letech 1983 – 2009 a ME v letech 1934 – 2010.

Colonial Korea and the Olympic Games, 1910–1945 Abstract This dissertation examines how Koreans received and consumed the Olympic Games under Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945). Although a growing body of research on colonial Korea addresses a range of topics beyond politics and economy, sports is still a relatively neglected topic in this field. By exploring Olympic fever in colonial Korea, this study shows how multifaceted aspects of Korean society became a part of the global sports world. Korean athletes participated in the 1932 Summer, 1936 Winter, and 1936 Summer Games as part of the Japanese delegation, attracting much attention from members of all walks of life in colonial Korea. Public figures as varied as political leaders, intellectuals, sport journalists, and athletes recognized and promoted the Games through the burgeoning mass media. As the Olympic Games were a powerful tool for promoting Korean nationalism, Korean athletes’ performance was in the spotlight of Korean vernacular media, which also pursued commercial interests in featuring scandals of athletes. Nevertheless, many advocates of public gymnastics criticized what they perceived as the bourgeois-oriented, if not elitist, nature of the Games.

Chairman's Message Australian athletics has taken a significant step forward in the past 12 months with the Australian team's seventh placing at the IAAF World Championships in Seville and the Optus Australian Championships at Stadium Australia in February 2000 being two major highlights. Internationally, Australia was very successful in competition with four medallists at the World Championships, Cathy Freeman (gold), Dmitri Markov (silver), Tatiana Grigorieva (bronze) and Kerry Saxby-Junna (bronze). Our junior stars really performed above themselves with Georgie Clarke in the 800m and Jana Pittman in the 400m Hurdles winning gold medals at the 1999 World Youth Championships in Poland. Through the Australian domestic season highlighted by the Optus Grand Prix Series, Australia's athletes set Olympic qualifiers with monotonous regularity. Sprinters Matt Shirvington and Patrick Johnson took men's 100m running to a new level, jumpers Peter Burge, Jai Taurima and Shane Hair established a competitive rivalry in the long jump and throwers Lisa-Marie Vizaniari, Justin Anlezark and Stuart Rendell shot up the world rankings. This information and much more is included in this 49th annual Athletics Australia Handbook of Records and Results. It is the definitive guide to Australian athletics statistics, which is a must for all statisticians, media, athletes, coaches, administrators and those with a general interest in the sport.
